Analyst claims 6.4 million Windows Phones were sold in China in 2012

Analyst claims 6.4 million Windows Phones were sold in China in 2012

Analysts iMedia Research claims 6.4 million Windows Phones were sold in China in 2012, giving the smartphone OS a 3.8% market share for that year.
This places Windows Phone 4th, with Android holding 68.6 percent,  followed by iOS with 12.8 percent and  Symbian with 12.4 percent.
The Chinese market is currently the world’s biggest smartphone market, and back in September 2012 Stephen Elop himself confirmed that China is also Nokia’s biggest Windows Phone market.
The news is significant due to the recent rumour of Nokia celebrating 2 million Lumia sales in 3 months.  Given than 6.4 million per year equals 1.6 million a quarter, it is far from inconceivable that increasing support from carriers and even better Windows Phone 8 handsets would have raised this number above 2 million per quarter.
While we have had some sites pooh-poohing  the news, I think it would be a rather bad sign for Nokia if sales are not increasing at least at that rate in China.

Samsung Galaxy S IV to help promote Qi wireless charging against rivals

Samsung Galaxy S IV to help promote Qi wireless charging against rivals

Nokia has shown strong commitment to including wireless charging in their Windows Phones, and have even spoken about expanding it down their line.  The greatest risk however to the future of the Qistandard used by Nokia is the adoption of rival standards by heavyweights such as Samsung and Apple.
Now Digitimes reports that Samsung may be looking at adopting Qi for their next big blockbuster, the Galaxy S IV, according to their sources.
Unfortunately it is not expected to be built-in, but rather an additional back, like Samsung has been doing already for a number of handsets. It is still however expected to cement the future of Qi and the Wireless Power Consortium against rivals such as by the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA).
Unfortunately as usual Apple is not playing ball, and while there is rumours that company is also looking at wireless charging, chances are they will be using their own internal “better” standard.
Unfortunately Apple certainly has the power to move the market, especially when it comes to support by 3rd parties and accessory makers, making Samsung’s support for the standard even more important.
Hopefully Apple will decide to sit out this generation and allow Qi, who has licensees like HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, Sony Mobile Communications and of course Nokia, to solidify its position, which will make support in places public places like airprts, coffee shops and restaurants very likely, and make using our Lumias even more enjoyable.

Nokia Lumia 620 competitively priced in India at 14999 INR

Nokia Lumia 620 competitively priced in India at 14999 INR

image

Nokia has made the pricing of the Nokia Lumia 620 official in India, and I think for once Nokia’s critics will be satisfied, as the handset is very competitively priced at 14,999 INR ($273).
This puts the device up against handsets like the HTC One V at Rs 15000 and the Samsung Galaxy S Duo, with both handsets having similar specs.
Nokia has been in the habit of overpricing their handsets recently when they hit the market in India.  Do our readers think they struck the right mark this time? Let us know below.

Investors respond positively to Nokia’s growth ambitions in SEC filing

Investors respond positively to Nokia’s growth ambitions in SEC filing

The US stock market has responded positively to Nokia’s 20-F SEC filing, where Nokia repeated their ambition to grow faster than the smartphone market, thereby gaining market share, and maintain an operating margin of 10% or more.
They also expected their Nokia Siemens joint venture to also have a 5-10% profit margin.
Nokia also re-iterated that they expected in the short term Microsoft’s platform support payments to exceed the minimum Windows Phone royalty payments the company will make to Microsoft.
Nokia’s shares have risen 3% earlier today, and is current hovering around 2% up on the day.

Sander Teunissen,  B2B Sales Manager for Nokia Netherlands, has tweeted that an IP54 protective cover for the Nokia Lumia 620 is on its way.
The cover would, according to the rating, provide good protection against the ingress of dust and will be resistant to water spray from all directions, though not quite so resistant that you would be able to swim with it.
The cover likely reveals a new enterprise focus for what is usually seen as a youth-orientated smartphone.  In Finland Nokia sells a large number of their smartphones into business, and have already produced a rugged case for the Nokia Lumia 820.
Nokia Russia has told WinPhoneLive.ru that the cover  will not be available immediately, but should hit the market shortly.

[Samsung UNPACKED] Be ready 4 the next Galaxy

smartphonehere.blogspot.com
http://cloudfront2.bostinno.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/SamsungGalaxyS4Video.jpg
Pending the presentation of Samsung Galaxy S4, rumors multiply. The latest evokes the presence of a system for detecting eye movements, to scroll through a page or photos at a glance.

While Samsung raises the pressure before the presentation of the Galaxy S4 March 14 in New York, the news is fueled by rumors on the specifications of the device. One of the latest is reported by the New York Times. Thus, according to an employee of Samsung, the smartphone will feature a technology called Eye Scroll. It would be a system for detecting the position of the eyes would automatically scroll the pages when reading a text on the screen, or move from one photo to another. This is the front camera which is used to detect eye movements.

This information is credible, since the manufacturer has patented this technology in Europe and the United States. In addition, the integration of a detection system view is not new. The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Tab 2 already had a technology called Smart Stay. It allows the phone to see if the user has their eyes on the screen, so as not to activate the automatic standby. Detection technology of eye movements is also not unique to Samsung invention. Chinese manufacturer Haier has already shown an equivalent device for its TVs, which is based on technology developed by the Swedish company Tobii.

Nokia Expresses Support For Apple In Patent Case Against Samsung

Nokia Expresses Support For Apple In Patent Case Against Samsung

Nokia has filed its amicus brief yesterday in court in order to support Apple in the ongoing patent case between Apple ans Samsung. Nokia is supporting Apple’s argument that U.S. patent holders have access to injunctive relief even if a defendant can argue that the accused products potentially implement (or infringe) vast numbers of patents.
Here is the part of the Nokia’s brief submitted to the court,
DESIRABILITY OF AMICUS BRIEF
The district court’s ruling that in order to obtain a permanent injunction against an infringing competitor, a patent holder must also establish a “causal nexus” between the patented feature and the source of demand for the infringing product could cause wide-ranging damage to the United States patent protection landscape. By creating such a rule, the district court has diverged from the precedent of this court and could severely restrict, if not outright eliminate in some circumstances, the ability of a patent holder to obtain injunctive relief.
Amici urge this court to reverse the district court’s order denying permanent injunctive relief, because the new “causal nexus” requirement set forth therein sets a dangerous precedent. This Court has previously determined that while the Supreme Court’s decision in eBay v. MercExchange, L.L.C., 547 U.S. 388, 393 (2006) eliminated any presumption that the holder of an infringed patent is automatically entitled to a permanent injunction, that decision was in no way intended to eliminate the availability of injunctive relief altogether. See Robert Bosch LLC v. Pylon Mfg. Corp., 659 F.3d 1142, 1149 (Fed. Cir. 2011). The “causal nexus” requirement as applied by the district court here, making the evidentiary standard for obtaining a permanent injunction so burdensome and strict that it may rarely, if ever, be met, will essentially lead to a compulsory-licensing system wherein patent holders are forced to license patented technology to competing firms, which could in turn harm incentives to innovate.

Note+ Updated: SkyDrive Backup, Lock Screen Orientation, and More!

Note+ Updated: SkyDrive Backup, Lock Screen Orientation, and More!

Screenshot 01 Screenshot 02 Screenshot 03
Note+, a simple yet delightful note-taking application, was updated today to include one of the most user-requested features: SkyDrive backup.
The feature is really simple, allowing the user to manually upload a backup to the Documents folder on SkyDrive. This backup is secure, created using AES encryption, which makes it impossible to steal information by a person who gets access to the file. Furthermore, it can’t be modified by the user, potentially making it unusable.
Screenshot 03
SkyDrive sync, or the ability to restore the notes using this backup, is coming in the next update. The reason is to exhaustively test this security-critical feature before releasing it to the public, and guarantee a working solution using the Live Connect API.
Other features are included with the update, including a new setting to lock the screen orientation to portrait, and an easier to discover Live Tile which allows the creation of new notes from the Start screen.
You can download Note+ at the Windows Phone Store for US$1.29, and with features like Live Tiles, Speech Recognition, Voice Commands, Lock Screen Notifications, Security PIN, sharing, and more, it’s practically a bargain.

Ferrari and Apple Bringing Siri, iPads to Italian Supercars

Not only did Ferrari unveil the LaFerrari (above), a hybrid supercar, this week, it also announced that Apple will offer Siri integration and iPad minis in the Ferrari FF. And while the $1.3 million LaFerrari is incredibly exciting, it’s the company’s partnership with Apple that is most intriguing to us.
According to Ferrari, the relationship, which was established when Apple executive Eddy Cue joined the automaker’s board of directors last year, will allow for Ferrari to offer Apple’s Siri Eyes Free mode in the four-seater, meaning drivers will be able to take control of their vehicle’s infotainment system using Apple’s Web-connected voice assistant.

Beyond that, the FF will also come with two brand-spanking-new iPad minis for rear seat passengers, for when sitting in an Italian supercar becomes so blasé that you’d rather play “Words with Friends” than enjoy the ride.
Although seeing Apple and Ferrari team up is interesting, it certainly isn’t the first time an automaker has used Siri Eyes Free mode in one of its vehicles. In fact, Chevy unveiled its Siri-enabled Spark EV, a decidedly less exciting car than the FF, at CES 2013.
What is impressive is the way Apple has managed to make Siri Eyes Free mode a worthwhile investment for automakers at both ends of the automotive spectrum, which means there’s no doubt we’ll see many more vehicles sporting Apple’s handiwork in the near future.

Google Play Celebrates First Birthday with Week of Giveaways

It’s hard to believe that Google Play is 1 years old today. Well, it’s just been a year since the name changed from the Android Market to Google Play. Still, Google isn’t letting such technicalities stop it from having a party. And to celebrate, the search giant is giving you, its humble Android user, a boatload of free gifts.
The celebration is set to last for a week and will include free apps, music, movies, TV shows and exclusive game content. Right now you can download two $10 gift cards from Gyft and a $15 gift card from Fancy with your first order. Free music offerings range from discounts on albums from artists like Rihanna, 2 Chainz and Bruce Springsteen to free songs from LCD Soundsystem and The Velvet Underground.
Pickings are a bit slim in the movie department, where rentals have been reduced to $0.99 on such classics as “Iron Sky,” “One Direction: The Only Way is Up” and “Paperboy.” Still, at least you’re not paying full price. And Google says the selection will change throughout the week’s events. Things are much more interesting in the TV section, which has a slew of episodes from hit shows like “Breaking Bad,” “Justified” and more, and they’re up for grabs free of charge.
Many books and magazines have also been heavily discounted including “The Hunger Games Trilogy,” which is available for $5. Rounding things out, Google partnered with a host of game developers to offer exclusive Android content like Android-themed game levels.

Unlocked Phones Reality Check: More Pain Than Panacea

More than 100,000 people signed a petition to support it. The FCC and White House are behind it. And now there’s a push to introduce legislation to reverse the ban on mobile phone unlocking that went into effect in January via the Librarian of Congress. So it’s a foregone conclusion then that the carriers will capitulate, right? Not so fast, says one prominent wireless analyst who has been following this controversy closely. And even then, most consumers don’t stand to benefit much. At least not yet.
Assuming consumers do get what they want, they likely won’t be thrilled with the end result. “Even if you agree with the White House on this issue and even if phone unlocking was implemented in as fully transparent a manner as you could hope for, it sill won’t do what consumers will think it will do,” says Avi Greengart, research director for mobile devices at Current Analysis.

The issue, Greengart argues, is that different carriers use different bands and technologies for their networks, which makes taking your unlocked phone from one provider to another a lot less seamless than you might think. In some cases it’s just impossible. “You won’t be able to take your Samsung Galaxy S III that you bought on Sprint to AT&T,” warns Greengart. “It won’t work.”

Incompatibility Mess

The analyst is referring to the fact that AT&T uses a GSM network, while Sprint relies on a CDMA backbone. In other cases, however, you can easily use an unlocked phone on more than one carrier. For instance, you could take an unlocked T-Mobile phone to AT&T using a SIM card. Unfortunately, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy AT&T’s 4G LTE speeds.

It gets worse. Even though AT&T and Verizon use the same 700 MHz spectrum, they use different portions of it, making their networks incompatible. You could argue that the carriers don’t want interoperability because it would make it easier for consumers to switch carriers while keeping the same phone.
More: 10 Worst Tech Rip-Offs and How To Avoid Them
Meanwhile, Sprint is using the 1900 MHz and 800 MHz spectrums. T-Mobile is trying to free up room in the 1700 MHz band for its LTE network while it “re-farms” its 1900 MHz spectrum for HSPA+. Add up all these caveats and it’s easy to see why phone unlocking may not be the holy grail some are making it out to be.
“Many consumers would need to consult an eye chart to figure out which phone they have, which carrier they’re on, which technologies are supported on their phone or their carrier and which technologies will work on the carrier they’re thinking of going to,” says Greengart.
According to Phil Goldstein, editor of FierceWireless, AT&T and T-Mobile subscribers have the most to benefit from making phone unlocking easier. “When you think of the unlocked phone market, it’s basically GSM phones,” he says. Both AT&T and T-Mobile are using 1900 MHz for HSPA+ going forward, but a T-Mobile customer won’t be able to tap into AT&T 4G LTE network.

Why The Resistance?

Given all of these caveats, why is the CTIA-The Wireless Association opposing the reversal of the phone unlocking ban? The industry group, which represents the major carriers, argues that they need to be able to recoup the cost of the subsidy that reduces the initial purchase price of the handset.
In a statement, CTIA Vice President Michael Altschul said that “The Librarian of Congress concluded that an exemption [on phone unlocking] was not necessary because the largest nationwide carriers have liberal, publicly available unlocking policies, and because unlocked phones are freely available in the marketplace — many at low prices.” Altschul added that carriers will unlock a phone at the customer’s request once a the contract terms are satisfied.
More: Top 10 Smartphones
What such Senators as Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) want is legislation that will get rid of the ban on unlocking cell phones altogether. That could be a scary proposition for the major carriers, who need to hold on to many subscribers as they can as the number of new subscribers dries up and the market becomes more over-saturated.
“The carriers don’t want to publicize the idea that consumers can have more control over switching between networks,” argues Goldstein. “A blanket exception to phone unlocking rubs carriers the wrong way because they see it as one less touch point that they get to control.”

Part of that control includes the ability to charge exorbitant rates of overseas usage. For instance, AT&T charges $120 for 800MB of data in Spain, versus the $21 Vodafone charges for 1GB of data when you buy a local SIM. Getting your phone unlocked can be a real pain, too. One colleague who wanted to plug another SIM in his AT&T iPhone while abroad had to threaten to leave the carrier before he got the green light.

Mid-2014 Could Be Turning Point

In the short term, carriers have plenty of reasons to be nervous about phone unlocking, but perhaps it’s not as big a threat they’re making it out to be. “Verizon is leaving a lot of its phones unlocked to start with, and last time I checked they haven’t seen a rise in subscriber defections,” says Greengart. The analyst says that making phone unlocking easier for consumers will likely have as little impact as number portability did, which allowed subscribers to take their existing numbers to other carriers.
The impact on consumers will also be minor for the foreseeable future, unless you’re someone who travels overseas. Ultimately, in order for unlocked phones in the 4G era to really matter, carriers will need to strike LTE roaming agreements. And that won’t happen until the networks are significantly built out, which Goldstein says won’t occur until 2014 at the earliest.  ”Until that happens I don’t anticipate the carriers having a fondness for software defined radios or anything that’s going to let you switch seamlessly between the networks.”

Motorola’s Upcoming Devices Not “Wow” By Google Standards

This is not usually something you get to hear from a CFO and SVP of any company. Google’s Patrick Pichette at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference recently admitted that Google’s prized 12 billion acquisition – Motorola isn’t making products that are “wow” by Google standards. The candid admission by him might have come across as a rude shock for anyone expecting a superlative product from Motorola on the lines of the fabled Xphone or a Motorola made Nexus class device.
Motorola’s Upcoming Devices Not “Wow” By Google Standards
Pichette however seems to have valid reasons for stating thus. According to him, the reason was reiterated in past Google earning calls as well. He noted that at the time of acquisition of Motorola, the company had already committed itself to a few products that it was developing for quite some time. Google did not want to immediately come in and shake things up. That said, from his own admission, it is clear that whatever Motorola has been working on for “some time” hasn’t managed to impress Google.
The Verge Reports and quotes Mr. Pichette
“The case with Motorola is that we’ve inherited a pipeline. Motorola has a great set of products, but they’re not really like ‘wow’ by Google standards. Dennis Woodside and his team have inherited 18 months of pipeline that we have to drain right now.”
Anyway, the problem with this revelation from the Google top exec is the fact that there have been rumors going on about the X Phone from Motorola that is supposedly under development. This device is believed to have been Motorola’s attempt at an innovative product with significant strides being made when it comes to the display technology, camera and battery life. This was also thought to be a device that would be Motorola’s answer to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S IV which is expected to make a landfall soon.
Does that mean the development of the X Phone is just a rumor? Or is it that even this Xphone doesn’t meet Google’s high standards?

Apple iWatch Is For Real; To Be Made Available Later This Year: Reports

We had (in fact our German co publication) back in December 2012 first reported about the news regarding the possibility of Apple coming up with a wearable watch type gadget. Most likely to be christened the iWatch, we now have reports coming in from various sources claiming that Apple has started testing designs for this wearable gadget. The device according to a BloomBerg report will resemble a small scale iPhone and like most iDevices of today would run iOS.
Apple iWatch Is For Real; To Be Made Available Later This Year: Reports
The report also adds that in the current stage of its development Apple is working on tweaking the battery life of the device – which they hope to be around four or five days from the current reported figure of just two odd days. It is also being reported that Apple is in talks with its old time partner Hon Hai Precision Industry Company to manufacture this new device.
Also to be noted is that back in 2011, Apple has reportedly filed for a patent application that talked about a “Bi-stable spring with flexible display”. If that went over your head, let me simplify it for you (sort of). That patent talked about a contraption that constituted a bi-stable spring that would be made out of thin steel and would come wrapped in a fabric covering. This in turn would be heat-sealed. The device would also have a display that would be located at one side of the bracelet (akin to a watch) with a logic board and battery stuck on to the other side.  The patent application also indicated that this device would come with a bunch of sensors onboard it and would also support wireless charging.
Anyway, do you think you would be lining up outside your nearest Apple Store to buy this one once this thing is out?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Case From China Hands on at CeBIT 2013 [Video]

MyLiving a case manufacturer out of Shenzhen China claims to have gotten some information about the Samsung Galaxy S4, enough for them to make a case! They mentioned that they got the details directly from Foxconn which is actually pretty standard for any case manufacturer that is looking to gain an edge.

We can only get so much of an idea about what the phone will look like but we figure we can get  pretty feel for things if we place a the Galaxy S4 case side by side with the case of the Galaxy S3.

China Unhappy With Android Dominance

There is one more entity apart from the likes of Apple, BlackBerry, Microsoft and Nokia who are not particularly happy with the continuing dominance of Android over other mobile OS platforms. China. That’s right. The giant communist country known for its anti-Google stand is not too happy over the fact that a large percentage of the Chinese populace is becoming too dependent on Android – and in turn to Google and its services.
China Unhappy With Android Dominance
The matter is been seeing with such seriousness that the country’s  Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released a white paper in order to voice the concerns to the Government. According to their statistics, over 70 percent of all smartphones in China now run Android as of Q4 2012. Arch rival iOS is languishing with just 21 percent of the market in spite of the impressive showing after the iPhone 5 launch there last year.
The White paper states:
“Our country’s mobile operating system research and development is too dependent on Android.”  It also adds that Google is doing every bit to discriminate against a bunch of Chinese Internet companies that include the Alibaba Group, Baidu Inc., and Huawei Technologies. The claim is that Google would not allow these companies access to Google’s core technologies and this would render them unable to build on top of Android.
That said, the White Paper doesn’t talk about any kind of measures that the Chinese Government needs to take to “check” the clout of Google. China is likely to push for an alternative OS. However this would have to be a long term strategy at least for now because there seems to be no stopping the Android juggernaut in its current form!

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Be Made of Plastic And Samsung Tells You Why

So, all geared up for the Samsung Galaxy S4 launch? Now, if you are hoping for Samsung to deliver something extraordinary, you might actually get it. However if you are hoping that this extraordinary device, like most of its competition would move up to a body that’s made of metal rather than plastic – which the norm has been with Samsung, you might be a tad disappointed. The company has already given clear hits pointing towards the possibility that the Galaxy S4 like all its predecessors would come enclosed in a plastic body. This might not be great news for people who thought they would see something from on the lines of the HTC One and the iPhone and a host of other phones which proudly sport metallic bodies.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Will Be Made of Plastic And Samsung Tells You Why
There is no denying the fact that the use of a metal casing gives that phone a premium air to it. However, there is one indisputable fact: That being, Samsung is able to sell more plastic clad phones than the others who have “classier” handsets. The Galaxy S3 created sales records even though at the time of its launch it was blamed to be not “good” enough a successor to the S2.  Anyway, once again, let us sort of confirm to you folks, our readers that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will most definitely come clad in plastic. The reason for our confidence is the statement given by Y.H. Lee, Executive VP of Samsung’s mobile division. In a recent tete-a-tete with CNET, he talked about The Galaxy S4’s plastic design. One reason that he cited for Samsung sticking to plastic was the fact that it was easier to mass produce handsets made of plastic as the manufacturing time for such devices are much lesser when compared to all metal phones. With Samsung expecting to sell over 100 million Galaxy S4 handsets this year, mass producing the handset was a primary objective.
