Poll: Has your Nokia Lumia 920 battery life improved?

Poll: Has your Nokia Lumia 920 battery life improved?

Has your NL 920 battery life improved
I went through a period when my phone would drain between 0.5 to 1% battery life every 10 minutes, even when using the battery saver.
However over the last week my battery life has improved dramatically to back where I expected it to be, meaning more than 50-60% battery life after a busy 9 hour work day, including streaming some podcasts during my lunch break.
I am still using Facebook Messenger, Rooms and the People Hub, and besides a stream of updates from Nokia for their network apps can not really explain the improvement.
Have our other readers had the same experience? Let us know below.

A Comixology Christmas: 12 Days of Free Digital Comic Books

Tis’ the season for giving and everyone’s getting into the spirit–even digital comics’ distributor Comixology, which today announced a special promotion to give away 12 free comics to iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire, Windows 8 device users.
Comics fans certainly have heard of the popular Comixology app. In October, the app topped 100 million in downloaded books and currently sits at number 11 on the list of top-grossing iPad apps in the Apple App Store. The service has a humongous library of comics-related material to thank for those numbers. The list not only includes the ever-expanding canon of superhero books from heavyweights like Marvel, DC, and Image, but also graphic novels for younger audiences like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and lovers of nostalgia comics such as Archie & Friends.

With a selection that wide, Comixology is betting users new and old will want to hop on the panel train. From today until December  18, the app will make available one select comic book that can be downloaded for free or gifted to friends and family at no cost.
Each free issue launches daily at 1 p.m. EST, and, no there’s not a set list of give-away titles. Kicking off the promotion is Avengers vs. X-Men #0, the jump-starter issue to a summer-time event that–you guessed it– pits Captain America and the Avengers against Cyclops and the X-Men.
If that doesn’t move you with the power of telekinesis to jump into comics or share with a buddy, perhaps tomorrow’s comic will entice you. But the only way to found out what comic is on tap is to check back at Comixology each day or browse the app on your iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, or Windows 8 device. You’ll find download and gifting instructions there as well.

HP to Apple: We already make PCs in the US, thank you very much

Apple's CEO Tim Cook made a lot of headlines this week when he announced the company would start making some of its Mac PCs in the U.S. sometime in 2013.  Some have been critical of Apple making its devices outside the US, particularly in China where the labor is cheap and many fear the workers in factories such as Foxconn are overworked for low pay.

This week, HP quietly posted word on its website that it already assembles many of its PCs in the U.S. That includes all of its workstations in a factory in Indiana, as well as 36 percent of its business desktop PCs. HP servers are made in Houston, Texas. HP says, "In 2012, we expect to assemble 2.9 million PC units in the United States.”

News.com reports that even some of HP's business EliteBook laptops are assembled in North America, although there's no specific city or state named by HP. And what about consumer PCs? Tony Prophet, senior vice president of operations at HP, states, "We're marginally moving even some consumer PC [assembly] back to North America. Doing less of that in China."

While many of the components inside HP PCs may still be made overseas, the fact that the PC maker still assembles quite a few of them in the U.S., and plans to do more, is a big bullet point in their favor.

Pay Now, Save Later: T-Mobile to Ditch Phone Subsidies in 2013

Next year will bring an end to T-Mobile’s iPhone drought, but that’s not the only major hardware change coming to the magenta-loving carrier in 2013. While T-Mobile may be the last major U.S. cellular provider to receive Apple’s vaunted handset, it will be the first to ditch subsidized phone pricing. That’s right, starting next year T-Mobile customers will need to bring or buy their own paid-for phone in order to sign up for a subscription.

Europeans are used to buying phones at full price, but most Americans don’t, and U.S. customers may stagger with sticker shock when they realize how much a smartphone actually costs. For example, while a subsidized iPhone 5 goes for $200 with a two-year contract, an unlocked version starts at $650. Legere, however, teased that T-Mobile has a trick up its sleeve to hopefully negate that problem.

The carrier could charge $99 for the iPhone (and presumably other handsets) up front, then let the customers pay off the phone in $15 to $20 per month installments over 20 months, GigaOm reports. That sounds similar to an optional payment plan T-Mobile implemented for Samsung’s Galaxy Note II phablet.

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not T-Mobile’s unsubsidized gamble pays off. The carrier’s Value Plans still require a two-year contract, and the lower prices of those Value Plans wash out if you’re forced to pay an additional $20 per month payments for your phone, since Value Plans tend to be exactly $20 per month cheaper than T-Mobile’s subsidized Classic Plans.

Legere said T-Mobile made the decision to ditch subsidies after noticing that 80 percent of its activations last quarter were for Value Plans, not Classic Plans. Of course, the company has been spent considerable time and energy to convince iPhone owners to bring their unlocked handsets to T-Mobile’s network, a priority that will no doubt change when the carrier offers Apple’s phone directly. Legere confirmed that the iPhone is indeed coming to his company in 2013, but didn’t say when. We wouldn’t expect to see a full roll-out until T-Mobile finishes upgrading its network to bring faster data speeds to the iPhone, which should be six months or so down the line. Currently, most iPhone owners only receive 2G speeds on T-Mobile.

New Samsung Galaxy Phone to Sport Unbreakable, Bendable Screen?

With manufacturers fast running out of more innovations to cram in to the smartphones of today, Samsung seems to be readying itself to debut a stunner of a phone early next year when they would possibly launch a successor to the current king of the ring – the Galaxy S III. Because rumour has it that Samsung’s next generation Galaxy branded flagship – the Galaxy S IV might sport an unbreakable, bendable display.
New Samsung Galaxy Phone to Sport Unbreakable, Bendable Screen?
This is apart from the super powerful hardware it will sport. As of now people are talking about the device cramming in a quad core processor as well as a 13 megapixel camera with possibly improved optics.
As for the unbreakable display, we might want to remind you that Samsung has been developing bendable OLED displays since years and have on many occasions demoed the technology at popular trade shows across the globe – including the CES. For some reason, they haven’t used the same on any of their consumer products. The reason might be the increased cost of manufacture of these displays.
Now though, it seems Samsung is convinced that it is time these displays make it to mainstream consumer products. It would also be interesting to see if Samsung would lend this technology to other manufacturers or would keep it to themselves.
Samsung has been steadily increasing the gap between itself and other smartphone manufacturers with each passing quarter and is currently the world’s biggest smartphones manufacturer and it looks like the company intends to remain there for the foreseeable future.

Surface “killing” blamed on lack of distribution

The general reaction to the Microsoft Surface is that people are quite taken with the device. There’s no denying it’s a good looking piece of tablet. But outside of a Microsoft store or their online store, has anyone actually seen a Surface on the shelves?

The answer is no; for the foreseeable future, Surface is only available in Microsoft stores. And with these stores being few in number, the lack of consumer facing devices is hurting sales. Detwiler Fenton is a Boston-based brokerage firm that performed research on the device.

Lack of distribution is killing the product. Mixed reviews and a [$499] starting price tag certainly don’t help, but lack of retail exposure at Best Buy and others is severely depressing sales.
Have they a point? There are many people who will see the billboards and advertising for the Surface and think “wouldn’t mind seeing it and trying it,” but will they ever get the chance if Microsoft continues to only stock the device in their own stores? And once they actually see the device, would they be prepared to pay $499 for the device when there are dozens upon dozens of Android tablets undercutting Microsoft’s Surface pricing. And that’s even before we mention the different iPads available.

While sales figures haven’t been properly clarified, Microsoft claims their approach to selling and distributing the device is modest. Having said that, different analysts are sounding out different sales figures for Q4 and the holiday season; some say 1.3 million units, with Detwiler Fenton saying that they will only shift 500,000 to 600,000 units.

Either way, will Microsoft be prepared to change its original strategy and only offer the Surface in their stores, or will the soon to be released $899 Surface Pro force their hand and shift to offering the device on the High Street? Only time will tell.

HTC 8X and 8S to launch on all China’s major networks in mid-December

HTC 8X and 8S to launch on all China’s major networks in mid-December

There is some indication that China is already one of the biggest markets for Windows Phone, with AdDuplexnoting the country had 13% of Windows Phone usage, vs only 14% for US.
With the influx of new Windows Phones this trend is likely to continue.  HTC has announced that both the HTC 8X and HTC 8S will be released in Mid-December and, a bit like the US, the handset will also be widely available on the countries major carriers, with variants becoming available on China Unicom (WCDMA ), China Telecom (CDMA2000 ) and China Mobile (TD-SCDMA ).
Pricing has not been revealed yet.

Did the HTC 8X help turn around HTC’s revenue nose dive?

Did the HTC 8X help turn around HTC’s revenue nose dive?

HTC-sales-2012-November
HTC has finally reported a financial result which did not make analysts cry. For November they reported a boost in their monthly sales from $NT 17.21B in October to $NT 21.2 billion in November, up 23%.
The sales generated  $NT 4 billion (US $ 137M) in profit. The only significant product launch in this period was HTC 8X and 8S, suggesting to unwiredview.com that Windows Phone may be responsible for the turn around.
Of course HTC is still down Year On Year, but if Windows Phone is indeed responsible for their improved sales numbers (rather than their new 1080p Android phone) we can only hope this will stimulate a greater commitment to the OS by the Taiwanese company.

A guide to Microsoft Licensing types

While everyone knows that you need to have a legitimate license to use a Microsoft product at home or at work, licensing from a business point of view is extremely complex. Even the licensing options available to retail products is adding a level of complexity that the regular home user would seldom need. With that in mind, I wanted to put together a guide to licensing for the Microsoft product family, to give users new to the concepts an overview of what to expect.
Recently, I’ve been involved in a Microsoft audit. It’s been an interesting experience, one I had never been privy to until now. The auditor used to work for Microsoft, but moved to the company’s he with now, his sole role to audit Microsoft customers to ensure compliance with the companies licensing agreements. I’ve had great dealings with him and learnt so much in such a short space of time, which I will get into later, but to quote my new friend:
Once you start getting into OEMs, SA, VL and license agreements, Microsoft licensing becomes a very dark art.
He isn’t wrong. I’ve been ignorant in the past, thinking that when you buy a product like Windows, Windows Server, Exchange, SQL, etc. you own it and can use it. Not quite. You may own the products and in some cases, like with Windows Server OS’, get given a number of complimentary CALs when you purchase the software in the stores. It’s these CALs that dictate how many people can then use these products in your environment. But let’s keep things simple for now.

Full Packaged Product (FPP) or Retail licenses

These are the simplest license Microsoft offer, to a point at least. The idea behind FPP (more commonly referred to as retail) licenses is that you walk into a store or buy the software online and that’s it. You own it, yours forever and a day. Windows and Office are the ones that at some point you may have bought. You can install/uninstall/reinstall the software as much as you like, as long as it’s only installed on one device at any one time.
Some additional allowances with Office FPP licenses may allow you to install the same copy on a portable device (laptop or tablet) for use by the primary license owner; in other words, the person who bought and installed the license on the first desktop computer.
Windows Server works in the same way; buy the license and use it on as many different pieces of server hardware as you like, as long as it’s one product key per one piece of tin. But retail Windows Server licenses will also come with five “free” client access licenses (CALs, which I will cover shortly) that allow five users or devices to connect to that Server instance at any one time. A CAL is the right to make authenticated connections to server(s). This is when licensing starts to get complicated.

OEM Licenses

If you buy a PC or laptop from PC World, Best Buy, or direct from Dell or HP, you will almost certainly get a Windows OS installed on it. You might even get Office as well, depending on the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) you choose. These licenses are known as OEM licenses with their cost bundled in with the final price of the computer you buy. They are usually slightly cheaper than buying FPP licenses.
So, what’s the difference between Retail and OEM licenses? You’re buying the software and you own it, so you would think that it’s yours to use how you like. Nope! An OEM license lives and dies with the PC it was bought with or first installed on. So Windows, Office and Windows Server are all tied to the system and its hardware configuration; it’s classed as non-transferable. However, it is possible to upgrade and replace components in the system, except the motherboard. The motherboard can only be replaced, and no new license required, if it’s faulty. And you will have to get the same motherboard from the OEM to maintain license validity.
You are entitled to downgrade the OS to a previous version (versions being Vista, 7 and 8) to a product that preceded it. However, you must downgrade to the same edition (editions being Home, Professional, Enterprise, etc.). So Windows 8 Pro can be downgraded to Windows XP Pro, Windows 7 Enterprise can be downgraded to Windows XP Pro as it’s the most suitable and version in the XP editions; only Home and Professional versions of XP were released. Applications cannot be downgraded.
You can, when buying an OEM server license, purchase CALs with that server license. But as CALs aren’t tied to a server license, you only need to ensure that you have enough CALs for users and/or devices for the correct version (being 2003, 2008, 2012, etc.) of the server OS they are using. I’ll cover CALs, in more detail, in part two.

Volume Licensing

This is where businesses and organizations come into play. Most companies that require the purchase of Microsoft software in bulk, or require more options, manageability and flexibility, will generally use Volume licensing. Like FPP and OEM, the licenses never expire, but Microsoft also offer a subscription option. This option will expire and the licenses tied to it become invalid, unless the subscription is renewed.
You have to make an initial purchase - a minimum - of five licenses, but they can be split across the entire suite of products Microsoft offer. A Windows Server 2012 license, two Windows 8 licenses and two Office 2013 licenses and you’re there. You can then buy additional licenses in whatever number you need, once the initial five-or-more agreement is in place.
Much like OEM licensing, you can downgrade the software to the previous version, same edition. However, now you have the ability to downgrade applications like Office to their previous version, same edition.
Portable use rights are extended to Volume licensing as well. Have you a user with a desktop and laptop? Use the same license on both devices at no additional cost! FPP does offer this, but its availability is limited and will depend largely on the piece of software.
You can transfer license between machines now too! If you have a SQL Server that dies, build or purchase a new server and transfer that SQL Server license to the new server.
Finally, like OEM licensing, Volume licensing is cheaper than FPP as you’re only getting the media, and not a packaged product.

LCD Football Games Are Back!

LCD Football Games Are Back!

Red Blip FootballElectronic Football

For those of you who may have had your start with handheld gaming in the 70s or 80s there are a couple of interesting games available in the Windows Phone Store that may take you back to your youth (and for those of you too young to remember these, these games will give you a history lesson for what games used to be like).
Electronic Football and Red Blip Football are two football games based on the LCD football games of the past.
Red Blip Football is a two-player game (as in you hand it to the other player when your turn is done) that is almost completely authentic to the games of the past.
Electronic Football adds passing and is a one-player game.
Both games are fun and well executed.  And both are free and ad supported.  They run on both Windows Phone 7 & 8.  Note, the games are developed by different, unrelated developers.

Qualcomm Announces Ultra-Low Power NFC Chips For Mobile Devices

Qualcomm Announces Ultra-Low Power NFC Chips For Mobile Devices

Today Qualcomm’s subsidiary Qualcomm Atheros announced a new ultra-low power NFC chip for mobile devices. NFC Chips in mobile devices allows contactless communications and data exchange, including next-generation mobile payments. NFC is already included in several Windows Phone device including Nokia Lumia 920. But the main issue with NFC in Nokia Lumia 920 was the power drain caused by it. It seems the upcoming NFC chips from Qualcomm will fix this issue and an overall footprint is 50 percent smaller than current NFC chips available in the market.
These chips will be available in consumer devices from Q3 2013. I hope the next Nokia Lumia flagship will include this chip and it will shave away few millimeters of thickness.
Read full press release after the break.
Press Release:
Qualcomm Atheros Introduces Ultra-Low Power Near Field Communication Chip for Mobile Devices
NFC Solution to Drive Next-Generation Mobile Payments and Wireless Connectivity
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – December 5, 2012 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., introduced a new ultra-low power near field communication (NFC) solution that will enable mobile devices with contactless communications and data exchange, including next-generation mobile payments. The QCA1990 is the industry’s smallest, ultra-low power system-on-chip (SoC) with an overall footprint that is 50 percent smaller than current NFC chips available in the market. When paired with Qualcomm Atheros’ WCN3680 1-stream, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi/Bluetooth 4.0/FM chip, the QCA1990 will enable seamless user experiences in the mobile, computing and consumer electronics markets.
The QCA1990 offers platform-level integration with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and next-generation processors and modems to seamlessly enable NFC on Qualcomm’s OEM partner smartphones and tablets. The QCA1990 software stack complies with the NFC Forum Controller Interface (NCI) and is fully integrated to enable faster time-to-market for customers. Its state-of-the-art radio frequency (RF) performance exceeds requirements established by EMVCo and the NFC Forum. With supported antenna form factors that are eight times smaller than current market offerings, QCA1990 offers significant cost savings for OEMs to integrate NFC at a significantly lower price point.
As consumers continue to rely more on their mobile devices for new and extended applications, battery drain can be a significant issue; the QCA1990 employs extremely low-power polling algorithms to prolong battery life. The QCA1990 also offers a wide range of secure element options, both embedded and SIM-based, while supporting multiple secure elements concurrently, including support for a dual-SIM configuration.
“Qualcomm Atheros believes NFC will be another key element of an enriched experience for smartphone and tablet consumers. As consumers continue to adopt functions like mobile payments and contactless data exchange, Qualcomm intends to be at the forefront of delivering simple, easy-to-use solutions to OEM partners,” said David Favreau, vice president of product management, Qualcomm Atheros. “By enabling client devices, Qualcomm Atheros is paving the way for rapid adoption of products that incorporate NFC technology.”
The QCA1990 is pre-tested to meet the requirements from payment schemes, mobile operators and OEMs globally. The QCA1990 will sample to customers starting in the first quarter of 2013, with commercial designs with leading OEMs expected in the third quarter of 2013. Windows Phone 8 version of WhatsApp to be 6 times faster

Windows Phone 8 version of WhatsApp to be 6 times faster

WhatsAppReply-WLWPHK
WhatsApp is not available for Windows Phone 8 yet, and an impatient WLWP reader emailed the company to ask what the hold-up was.
They received the helpful reply above.  While the support staff could not say when the software would become available, they did say the new version would be 6 times faster than the current software, and would sport new emoji.
They also said the company will continue to use the background audio API to keep their app active in the background, but would ultimately wish for Microsoft to make other methods for running in the background available.

AAPL have their worst day this year as NOK climbs 12.79% on iPhone China miss

image
Apple share holders did not have a good day today, with the company losing $35 billion in value today on fears that its margins are being squeezed, that it is losing tablet market share, and crucially that the company was edged out by Nokia in negotiations to have their smartphone released on China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier with 700 million subscribers.
Nokia today announced that they will be releasing their flagship, the Nokia Lumia 920T, on China Mobile’s network before the end of the year.
Meanwhile Apple will be selling their iPhone 5 on the much smaller China Unicom and China Telecom.
“Nokia announced that they are launching one of their Lumia phones with China Mobile, and there was some hope that Apple would launch their iPhone on that network,” Gus Papageorgiou, an analyst with Scotia Capital Inc. in Toronto, said in an interview.
While the iPhone has become Apple’s profit centre recently, more bad news has been that consumers are increasingly opting for cheaper models, such as the iPhone 4 and 4S instead of the 5, and the iPad Mini instead of the more profitable iPad.  It seems Apple, who previously could do no wrong, is developing an increasing crisis of confidence in the market, with its share price more than 23% down from its September peak.
Nokia on the other hand is hitting a 6 month high, with its after hours price hovering around $3.90 at the time of writing. Good news include its China Mobile deal, and the release of the cheap mid-range Nokia Lumia 620, which should bring significant volume to Windows Phone 8.

Design, Create and Print 3D Paper Models on Your iPad with Foldify

Just when you thought you’ve seen everything the iPad is capable of, along comes a nifty app like Foldify, which takes the tablet in a new and totally awesome direction. What is Foldify? It’s an upcoming app that lets you design foldable papercraft creations right on your iPad, then print them out and bend them into the 3D figures you’ve dreamed up. In other words, it’s like a homebrew foldable.me.
Foldify’s developers haven’t said much about the app — we don’t even know its scheduled release date — but the video down at the bottom of this article shows off the basic process of creating a 3D paper figure, from choosing a template to selecting pre-drawn features to coloring the whole thing in. The preview pane is an especially nice touch, giving you a glimpse of your creation in glorious 3D before you go to the trouble of AirPrinting it out.

Amazing weather updated – optimized for Windows Phone 8

Amazing weather, a very good and well-designed weather app, just got updated and is now called Amazing Weather HD.
What I noticed so far is that the Live Tile and the UI of the app look much sharper and clearer and that it appears optimized for HD resolutions. Before the update, the Live Tile as well as the UI were unclear and fuzzy due to the lack of high-resolution elements (like icons etc.) which Windows Phone 8′s HD resolutions need. Also, the Tile can now be resized.
However, not only the look has improved, the performance also. The app feels a bit faster and smoother.
In my opinion, Amazing Weather was one of the best applications in the marketplace: a great quality for a not too expensive price. Now, thanks to the update, the application is even better. If you did not try amazing weather so far, take a look at this review and give it a try. There is also a free lite version available.
