Nokia to lower Lumia prices in IMEA

Nokia to lower Lumia prices in IMEA

In an interview with the Times of India Nokia’s senior vice president (India, Middle East & Africa) D Shivakumar said Nokia was planning to adjust its prices of its Lumia range to make them more affordable to consumers in the India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) region.
The statement was made in response to the question of Lumias selling better in more well-off regions.
Shivakumar said:
You will see more traction as we plan to expand the Lumia range and make it more affordable. Most markets in the IMEA region, except South Africa, have embraced the open-distribution model where handsets are not subsidised by service providers. Worldwide, there are two different business models — one, where the handset is subsidised by the operator, and the other where a consumer buys the phone independently. Since it is the latter model in most IMEA markets, Nokia aims to have a range of value points for it to attract various types of customers.
He went on to say Nokia would continue to work with Microsoft to take the Lumia range to newer markets and price points, though the ASHA line will remain the main revenue generator in the region.
Explaining the company’s strategy he said:
Lumia will be our prime challenger in the top-end and we will extend the range with newer products and a wider price band. We will also swiftly establish Asha as a smartphone as we reckon that the Asha Full Touch will be a huge bite for young consumers looking for entertainment and social experience. The third leg of our strategy involves building in future disruptions as and when they come in like we did with the PureView 41 megapixel phone.
Nokia is expected to announce between 2-4 Lumia devices at Mobile World Congress, which will likely epitomise this strategy, with a range of cheaper handset to increase the addressable market and a few high end Windows Phones with disruptive technology.

Huawei Ascend W1 passed through FCC, heading to Net10

Huawei Ascend W1 passed through FCC, heading to Net10

huawei-ascend-w1-tracfone-fcc
It seems Huawei’s low-end Windows Phone 8 handset is not going to be confined to Russia, China and India.
The handset has just passed through the FCC with prominent TracFone branding, and appears to be heading to its Net10 low-cost brand.
The handset will be HSDPA only there, but I suspect at the low prices it will command this will not be a problem.

Portico finally comes to unlocked Nokia Lumia 920 in UK

Portico finally comes to unlocked Nokia Lumia 920 in UK

Its been a long and unexplained wait, but unlocked Nokia Lumia 920 handsets are finally getting the Portico update in the UK.
Regular reader Matt has just received the notification on his Clove Nokia Lumia 920 on Vodafone, while on checking my handset on 3 UK also had the update available.
Matt has confirmed the update includes Microsoft and Nokia components, delivering of course the improved Windows Phone 8 features plus camera improvements.
It of course makes little sense that unlocked handsets, unencumbered by carrier restrictions should get the update last, but it is what it is.
Have unlocked handsets elsewhere in the world also received the update? Let us know below.

Big Surprise: Analysts cut Blackberry 10 sales projections from 1.75 million to 300 K

Big Surprise: Analysts cut Blackberry 10 sales projections from 1.75 million to 300 K

image
We are not going to automatically take credit for the latest downwardly revised sales projections for the Blackberry Z10, but we will say we were one of the first to indicate the device was not doing anything special for Blackberry’s sales numbers.
Now Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley has also jumped on the bandwagon, revising their sales estimates for Blackberry’s saviour from 1.75 million in Q1 2013 to a mere 300,000.
“Our global surveys post the recent BlackBerry Z10 launch indicated mixed initial sales with limited initial supply cited as the reason for early post-launch stock-outs at some carrier stores rather than overwhelming demand,” Walkley wrote in a note to investors. “Our follow-up checks have indicated steady but modest sales levels. With new BB10 smartphones launching in the U.S. only in mid-March or later at subsidized prices no better than competing high-end Apple/Samsung smartphones, combined with our expectations for the Galaxy S IV to launch at a similar time frame in the US market, we are lowering our BB10 sales estimates for the February quarter and all of F2014.”
He said “modest Z10 sales into the channel in the U.K. and Canada” were largely responsible for his decision to lower his Z10 sales estimates by 83% for Q2 2013 and did not expect things to improve much going forward.
“We believe carrier support for BlackBerry 10 in the U.S. is modest, as demonstrated by Sprint only planning to launch the Q10 and T-Mobile only the Z10,” he wrote. “Further, we anticipate carriers will not build large inventory levels for BB10, consistent with prior BB7 high-end launches, and will initially stock modest levels given the weaker consumer demand for high-end BlackBerry smartphones.”
“With our expectations BB10 smartphones will face increasing competition from a host of new Android and Windows smartphones and potentially a new iPhone in 1H/C2013, we anticipate global carrier partners will order cautious initial BB10 inventory levels, leading us to lower our Feb. quarter and F2014 BB10 estimates.”
Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette joined the death chorus, projecting BlackBerry Z10 shipments will total 275,000 to 325,000 units in Q1 2013, significantly less than Wall Street expectations of 1 million units.
“We believe the Street has gotten ahead of the potential reality for BB10 shipments,” writes Faucette. “There is no line of sight to profitability; we remain sellers of BBRY.”
Faucette says that to achieve “sustained profitability,” BlackBerry will need to triple or even quadruple current shipment estimates, and adds that he’s “skeptical that BlackBerry has any reasonable path toward achieving these kinds of shipments.”
Blackberry is competing with Windows Phone for the 3rd mobile ecosystem, with many doubtful the smartphone market can sustain more than even two.  Given the reality of the smartphone market, the sooner Blackberry is webOS’ed, the better for Windows Phone.

Chicken Zooma – a fresh remake of the popular classic Zuma game.

Chicken Zooma – a fresh remake of the popular classic Zuma game.

Chicken Zooma is not the typical Zuma game that one would expect to see.
Starting from the graphics it is clear that the creators have tried to achieve a funny and modern look. The game offers colorful scenes, funny characters, cartoon styled animations and sounds which grab the players’ attention right from the start.
Gameplay is another area where Chicken Zooma has distinctive improvements from its classic predecessors. The goal remains the same – do not allow the chain of eggs to reach their final destination by cleaning common items, but the execution is a bit different. The most notable difference is the ability to change the direction of the flying item multiple times by taping on the screen(see the video). This feature adds more options and control to the gameplay for the player, but can also lead to unexpected results when used wrongly.
Another game specific feature is that the gaps created in the chain are always closed after items are cleared. Though this may not sound like a significant difference from other versions of Zuma, it has a big influence on the agility of the gameplay making it more dynamic with items moving backward and forward.
The distinctive gameplay puts Chicken Zooma closer to the action games, but preserves its typical puzzle character.
The game is divided into thematic episodes and each one offers a variety of levels. The player can select between three difficulty levels, where the main difference is the speed of the moving chain of eggs.
Current version comes with one episode which takes place in a farm and a hint for an upcoming second episode, which will bring the action into a forest. The first episode has a total of 18 levels and each one can be played in all three difficulties.
Chicken Zooma is available for all Windows Phone devices regardless of the OS version or hardware specifications. The game costs 1.99$ with a trial version which unlocks the first four levels for all difficulties.
Overall Chicken Zooma is a really cool remake of an old classic. It offers attractive graphics and addictive gameplay across all Windows Phone devices at reasonable price. The team behind the game promises regular updates with new content and distinctive features.

HTC One real life camera sample leaked–they can keep their Ultrapixels

IMAG0031
MobileSyrup managed a coupe by snapping some pictures taken by the HTC One, HTC’s new flagship.
The 4 megapixel camera features optical image stabilization and extra-large pixels, which are meant to guarantee good low-light performance and low noise.
The technology is meant to be so advanced that it is impossible to port to Windows Phone.
Looking at the above picture sample however, which is extremely noisy, over-exposed on the whites and with low detail, I don’t think Windows Phone users are missing much.
See more pictures in full resolution at MobileSyrup here and let us know what you think.

While both of them are comparable when internet connection is available, what happens when you don’t have access to internet?
In the above video, Nokia showcases the ability to download full offline maps of a state/country, support for offline routing, availability of POI offline, etc, against Google Maps which does not offer any of them. Watch it in action above.

Samsung to release a maintenance update that brings WIFI tethering to the Samsung Omnia W

Samsung to release a maintenance update that brings WIFI tethering to the Samsung Omnia W

Its very good to hear stories of on-going support for Windows Phone 7.8 handsets.
The Samsung Omnia W in Italy recently received the Windows Phone 7.8, but owners were disappointed to note it did not include WIFI tethering, a feature that Samsung had promised was coming.
WindowsPhoneItaly looked into this issue, and received this statement from the company:
"We can confirm that the upgrade to version 7.8 for Omnia W is issued directly from Microsoft does not include tethering. Similarly, confirm, however, that we are already working on a Maintenance Release that includes this feature and will be available in the coming weeks. "
The statement makes an interesting reference to Windows Phone 7.8 being issued directly by Microsoft, as had been previously rumoured, and despite the update coming via OEMs and carriers it may still have required a lot more intervention by Microsoft than we suspected.
It is also of course good to hear Samsung continuing to support their users, especially in Italy where Windows Phone has been doing quite well.

Should Nokia Adopt NVIDIA Tegra Processor For Its New Camera Technology With Chimera?

Should Nokia Adopt NVIDIA Tegra Processor For Its New Camera Technology With Chimera?

Nvidia Chimera
Last year we reported about NVIDIA Tegra processors supporting Windows Phone platform. It was then reported that the NVIDIA processor codenames ’Grey’ coming in 2013 will bring Windows Phone platform support. Today NVIDIA announced the release of its new processor called Tegra 4i which was the previously reported processor codenames ‘Grey’. NVIDIA’s announcement had no mention for the support for Windows Phone devices, but I really want them to announce it soon after reading about their new camera technology called Chimera in their processor.
Chimera Computational Photography Architecture Key Features:
• First always-on HDR photos and videos
• First HDR panorama
• First persistent tap-to-track technology
• First single-flash HDR capture
Read the full press release after the break to know about the above in detail.

NVIDIA Introduces Groundbreaking Camera Technology with Chimera – World’s First Mobile Computational Photography Architecture
Tegra 4 Family Delivers First Always-On HDR Photos and Video, HDR Panoramic and Tap-to-Track Capabilities to Smartphones and Tablets
SANTA CLARA, Calif.-Feb. 19, 2013-Forging a path for the next wave of advanced, consumer-focused mobile imaging experiences and applications, NVIDIA today announced new capabilities delivered by the NVIDIA® Chimera™ Computational Photography Architecture.
Available in the NVIDIA® Tegra® 4 family of mobile processors, Chimera™ architecture offers a number of features never before available on mobile devices, including always-on high-dynamic range (HDR) photos and videos, HDR panoramic and persistent tap-to-track capabilities.
NVIDIA developed Chimera to enable mobile photography to be as flexible and creative as it is convenient. Its suite of new features, supported by enormous visual computing power, delivers capabilities far beyond what’s currently available, even in high-end dedicated DSLR cameras, to mainstream smartphones and tablets.
“NVIDIA’s Chimera architecture takes mobile imaging far beyond what consumers have come to expect from the phones and tablets,” said Brian Cabral, Vice President of Computation Imaging at NVIDIA. “Capabilities that until now have been reserved for professional photographers – like instant HDR and HDR panoramic shots and flawless image tracking – are now within easy reach for the rest of us.”
Previous mobile device architectures have made it difficult to use the best tools for different parts of complex image processing. Chimera architecture removes those boundaries by providing the power to conduct nearly 100 billion mathematical operations per second to perform image processing, using computational techniques used in X-ray CT scanners, deep space telescopes and spy satellites.
First revealed at CES 2013, the architecture redefines mobile imaging with always-on HDR photos and videos. This allows camera users to instantly capture high-quality, HDR images similar to how the human eye sees the world – in a vast array of locations and scenes, and under diverse lighting conditions.
Additional new features include HDR panoramic, which takes wide-angle, or “fish-eye,” shots that normally require an expensive digital single-lens reflex camera. The Chimera architecture captures a scene while the camera moves – from side to side, up and down or diagonally – effectively “painting” a panorama in real time from many angles and in any order the user wants. In contrast, competing offerings must either be moved in one direction along a single horizontal plane, or require significant amounts of post processing – taking up to 35 seconds – to stitch together the panorama.
In another industry first, the Chimera architecture includes persistent tap-to-track technology, which allows users to touch the image of a person or object to focus on within a scene. The camera then locks in on that subject whether it moves or the camera is repositioned to a better angle, while maintaining proper focus. Persistent tap-to-track also adjusts the camera exposure depending on any movement, helping avoid under- or over-exposure of the image’s subject or background.
NVIDIA Chimera is available as technology integrated into the Tegra 4 family, including Tegra 4 – the world’s fastest mobile processor – and the new Tegra 4i – the first integrated Tegra LTE processor.
Support from Leading Industry Players
Device makers can use the architecture to create differentiated imaging solutions to ship with their smart phones and tablets. The architecture also provides an application programming interface (API) that developers can use to create enhanced imaging apps for the growing Android mobile customer base.
Two important players in the camera imaging sensor market, Sony and Aptina – with others to be announced – have already added support for the Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. Sony’s Exmor RS IMX135 13 MP sensor and Aptina’s AR0833 1/3″ 8MP mobile imaging sensor support Chimera architecture, bringing always-on HDR capabilities to market. Device makers can now adopt this technology into their Tegra 4-powered devices; dramatically enhancing their photo and video capabilities.
“NVIDIA’s Chimera architecture with our AR0833 sensor delivers mobile customers an amazing photo and video experience,” said John Gerard, Senior Director of Mobile Products at Aptina.
Chimera Computational Photography Architecture Key Features:
• First always-on HDR photos and videos
• First HDR panorama
• First persistent tap-to-track technology
• First single-flash HDR capture

Sony Xperia Z vs Samsung Galaxy S III + Vidéo de test prise avec le Sony Xperia Z

Sony Xperia Z vs Samsung Galaxy S III

Sony was quick to release its flagship smartphone for the first half of 2013 – theXperia Z. The company did its job ahead of everyone else and is now enjoying a comfortable specs lead against the current Android flagships on the market. But as we all know, specs ain't everything! Could it be that the Galaxy S III, one of the best smartphones of 2012, can still prove to be a worthy opponent to the Xperia Z, even though technological evolution is on the side of Sony's handset? Let us take a closer look and find out!

Design

There are some evident differences regarding the design language for both devices. On one hand, we have the Sony Xperia Z, which has this rectangular shape and all-glass body, while on the other there's the Galaxy S III with its rounded corners and plastic build. Generally, we'd say that the Xperia Z has the more striking appearance of the two, definitely the more stylish one, though the GS III is easily the winner when it comes to comfort, as its rounded edges make the device feel substantially smaller in the hand.

In terms of build quality, the Galaxy S III is really no match for the Xperia Z, as its thin, plastic body may be pleasant to the touch, but leaves a lot to be desired as far as sturdiness and materials go.

One thing we really appreciate about the Xperia Z is the fact that it's water- and dust-resistant, which is a feature that you cannot find in any other flagship smartphone, including the Galaxy S III.

Display

Both the Xperia Z and Galaxy S III have a lot going for their displays, though both take very different approaches in that area. This is also one area where technological evolution has played its part, as the Xperia Z is armed with what seems to be the standard for high-end Android phones in 2013 – a 5” screen with 1080x1920-pixel resolution. This kind of size and res make for an amazing pixel density of 441 ppi, which means that pretty much anything that comes out on this screen is exceptionally sharp and clear. The GS III with its 4.8”, 720x1280-pixel resolution (306 ppi) screen is also very detailed and sharp, but of course the Z has the advantage here.

Being an advanced LCD screen, the one of the Xperia Z features much more realistic-looking colors, especially when compared to the Galaxy S III's colder tones. Overall though, the GS III is much more saturated and vibrant, so you may find it a bit more suitable for multimedia stuff, whereas the Xperia Z features the Mobile BRAVIA 2 engine, which also adds a certain degree of vibrancy to the image, but that feature only works in the gallery and video player, so overall you tend to end up looking at a slightly more lifeless image.

That said, the GS III has the dimmer screen, so keep this mind if you plan a lot of outdoor usage. Both handsets fail to impress with their viewing angles.

UK Estate Agent Foxtons deploys Nokia Lumia 820’s to 900 of its employees

UK Estate Agent Foxtons deploys Nokia Lumia 820’s to 900 of its employees

Foxtons, a large UK estate agent, has chosen the Nokia Lumia 820 as its business smartphone and has so far deployed around 900 to its employees.
Foxtons let and sell around 1,400 properties every month and needs its agents to receive, update and share information quickly while on the road.
The company chose Nokia Lumia due to its tight integration with their Microsoft back-end, including Exchange, Excel and Word document support, and support for the Windows development platform, which has already allowed the company to deploy in-house apps.
As Dan Rafferty, IT Director of Foxtons, explains: “In a fast moving business with many staff movements across departments and locations, keeping an accurate, up-to-date contact list is a challenge for us. We’ve developed an app integrating our personnel system with our active directory and phone system so all the information is accurate and can be accessed directly from our agents’ Nokia Lumia 820s. It’s a great timesaver and asset for the team. The Nokia Lumia 820 aligns with our entire device strategy and allows us to fully integrate our current Microsoft systems throughout the company.”
Nokia Lumias also offer reliable GPS Navigation, which is essential when agents cover large areas. When showing prospective clients around a property, agents can use Nokia City Lens to show live information on the local area, showcasing points of interest and amenities including leisure centres, cinemas, restaurants and shops.
Adrian Williams, director of Business Sales UK at Nokia, said: “Foxtons is a great example of how a company can empower its workforce to work effectively on the move, with their smartphones integrated with its existing Microsoft infrastructure. We are delighted that Nokia applications such as Nokia Drive and Nokia City Lens are making a real difference for Foxtons employees in the competitive real estate market.”
