ABI Research sees Windows Phone and Blackberry 10 having similar sales in 2013

ABI Research sees Windows Phone and Blackberry 10 having similar sales in 2013

imageABI Research have posted some of their projections for 2013, and they do not seem to be too optimistic about the prospects of Windows Phone, projecting at best 25% growth from 2012.
They see the Windows Phone installed base reaching 45 million handsets by the end of 2013, compared to 798 million Android handsets and 294 million iPhones, and around 20 million Blackberry 10 handsets. Given that more than 20 million Windows Phones have been sold already, this suggests around the same number of Windows Phones and Blackberry 10 handsets will be sold in 2013.
That would give Windows Phone 3.2% of the 1.4 billion device installed base, Blackberry 10 1.4%, iOS 21% and Android 57%.
Aapo Markkanen, ABI analyst, couched this prediction in positive terms, noting an installed base of 45 million handsets is enough to keep developers interested, calling it “maybe a race of two horses and two ponies.”
“The greatest fear for both Microsoft and BlackBerry is that the initial sales of their smartphones will disappoint and thereby kill off the developer interest, which then would effectively close the window of opportunity on further sales success,” he writes. “Our view is that the installed bases of this scale would be large enough to keep these two in the game.”
“Based on our current shipment forecasts, we don’t see the installed base of either BB or WP reaching the double-digits within the next five years,” Markkanen said. “It’ll be a slow climb, since if they both stay in the game they’ll be kind of eating into each other’s success. It won’t be that much-touted two-horse race, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a three- or four-horse race either. Maybe a race of two horses and two ponies.”
He also predicted only 5.5 million Windows tablets will be in use by the end of the year, vs 166 million iOS tablets and 75 million Android tablets.
Of course most analysts err by predicting things will remain the same as they always were, and then just multiplying the numbers out, but I suspect by the end of the year these projections will be looking very out-dated.

T-Mobile Germany decided not to offer the Samsung ATIV S, loses out to the Nokia Lumia 920

T-Mobile Germany decided not to offer the Samsung ATIV S, loses out to the Nokia Lumia 920

T-Mobile Germany has sent an email to those who registered interest in the Samsung ATIV S, telling them they will in fact not be adding the handset to their portfolio.
The launch on the carrier has been pushed back again and again, and was last slated for mid-February.
T-Mobile did not reveal their reasons, but there is little doubt the ATIV S is the black sheep of the Windows Phone family, seemingly not loved by either Samsung or the carriers.
Of course the interesting flipside to this story is that T-Mobile Germany in December had decided to carry the Nokia Lumia 920, apparently due to “expectedly high demand” and it may simply be that the carrier felt one flagship Windows Phone was more than enough.

Looking for a Windows Phone without a camera button? Remember the Alcatel One Touch

Looking for a Windows Phone without a camera button? Remember the Alcatel One Touch

2dc9979026e025d7f743e4d89ecb
Yesterday we were wondering why Microsoft was adding support for phones without camera button to Windows Phone 7.8, completely forgetting that such a handset has been released already.
Wp7forum.ru reminded us of the Alcatel One Touch Windows Phone 7.5 handset, which has already been released in Russia, and in fact comes without a physical camera button.
The low-end handset costs only 6990 rubles ($226), and I suspect any future Windows Phones so equipped will be around the same range or much lower.
Read more about the handset from the last time wrote about it here.

In Blackberry’s home land Nokia has not been shy to pour some cold water on Blackberry’s new Blackberry 10 parade, posting the above message on their Facebook page.
imagePart of Nokia’s #Switch campaign, Nokia notes the presence of free off-line mapping, Office apps out of the box, the always-up-to-date start screen and features like the linked inboxes which make Windows Phones great business phones.
It seems the share holders agree that Blackberry has not quite delivered, with the share price down 12.01% today on the launch of the handsets, and more than 25% since Friday, with some analysts warning it could halve further to only $6, from the current $13.60.

Blackberry Z10’s camera “an abject and miserable failure”

Blackberry Z10’s camera “an abject and miserable failure”

blackberry-z10-piccompariso
Blackberry is banking on their new Blackberry Z10 handset to save the company. Unfortunately as Gizmodo found, the camera fails on one important aspect – the camera sucks.
They write:
The Z10 didn’t even hold the dimmest, most-pathetic light to the other cameras in our test. Look at that photo above on the left. It is an abject and miserable failure. Because this is a particularly difficult shooting setting, all of the photos have problems with noise, distortion, and detail, but we’ve haven’t seen something so crummy as the Z10 in a long time. The Z10 even has a "night" setting that was completely useless. This is some four-years-ago crap.
As can be seen in the test scene from Gizmodo below, and the collage by Crackberryabove, there is one camera which consistently does very well, and that is  the Nokia Lumia 920.
BBz10 photo
With Blackberry’s consumer focus one would have thought they would have gotten this one detail at least slightly right. One wonders what else they messed up…

A Simple Tool Allows You To Update Your Device To Windows Phone 7.8

Windows Phone 7.8 Update Tool
Microsoft released Windows Phone 7.8 update for existing Windows Phone 7.5 devices yesterday. While some users got their update through Zune, most of them were out of luck. Windows Phone Hacker has created a simple tool that allows you to update your device with few clicks.
The tool acts as a wrapper for the UpdateWP file, and contains all the updates and their language packs. Using this tool has the same risk as using the manual cab method, and is somewhat experimental, so use at your own risk.

Microsoft ropes in Samsung for Windows Phone Business 2 Business push

Microsoft ropes in Samsung for Windows Phone Business 2 Business push

samsung2_505_082912112202
The biggest reason Samsung is still supporting Windows Phone despite its burgeoning Android ecosystem is its desire to penetrate the business market, with Samsung UK vice president of IT, Graham Long famously saying:
"The launch of Windows 8 really provides us with that opportunity where we will have everything from a smartphone through to a tablet through the PC through to the all-in-one," Long told V3.
"For us it provides a unique opportunity at the time of launch to go out to the market and showcase everything we have that’s available."
"In discussions we’ve had with IT directors and chief information officers we’ve been able to tell them we’ll be able to provide a smartphone, a tablet, a PC and an all-in-one utilising the IT they’ve built their business on for the last 25 years," Long told V3.
"What we’re seeing with the launch of Windows 8 is, from a computing and smartphone perspective, the ability to move into that space and have a competitive advantage."
Now Microsoft has added to that statement, with the Head of B2B marketing at Windows Phone Rikke Rasmussen telling Mobile News:
“Business is very important to us – [WP8] sits really well with SMBs. There are a lot of BlackBerry customers that are looking at other options, the full integration with Windows 8 makes sense and is cost effective for them.
Rasmussen said Microsoft will be going into pitches with Samsung “as soon as the manufacturer is ready” which will be  “very soon” following the launch of the Ativ S device earlier this month.
The company was however not abandoning Nokia and HTC.
“From our perspective, we will be trying to stay neutral with the manufacturers. We will be doing joint stuff with Samsung, as we do with HTC and Nokia, as soon as they are ready.”
Rasmussen told Mobile News a number of high-profile businesses have already switched from BlackBerry to Windows Phone, including the recent deal with HML Skipton, the UK’s fourth largest building society.
