Windows Phone 8 Backup feature savaged, and rightfully so

Windows Phone 8 Backup feature savaged, and rightfully so

image
For some reason Microsoft appears to have an allergy to providing a real back-up service for Windows Phone users.
Windows Phone 7 users could back-up their phones via Zune, but only when flashing a ROM, and were out of luck otherwise. The backup would also not restore to a new phone, for example if you wanted to replace or upgrade to another handset.
Windows Phone 8 is somewhat better,  but as All About Windows Phone notes in their editorial,  that’s only compared to not having any back-up at all, and even that is debatable.
Currently the Windows Phone 8 back-up feature will only save certain “stuff” to the cloud, including some settings, your list of installed apps and upload your photos to SkyDrive.
The Stuff includes:
  • The list of apps you’ve installed on your phone.
  • Your call history.
  • Your theme color.
  • The accounts you’ve set up on your phone.
  • Your Internet Explorer favorites.
  • Settings from around your phone, including photos, messaging, email and accounts, location, Internet Explorer, lock screen, Speech, and more.
What is not backed up is app settings, including databases created by 3rd party apps, games progress, live tile arrangements, passwords for email accounts and the actual apps, with only links to the apps in marketplace saved.
Other issues is that there is only one opportunity to restore, immediately after a hard reset, and that this occurs before WIFI is enabled, meaning it has to happen over 3G data, which can be costly if you are roaming, and can not be done at all without a SIM card in the phone.  (Edit:Sushant notes you can not restore at all when roaming, because data is switched off by default!) AAWP calls this a “stunningly poor piece of UI design”.
AAWP writes how it SHOULD work:

Here’s How It Should Work

I should be able to press the back-up button on my phone, and the resulting archive file should contain everything about my phone. The back-up application should know all my personal details, address books, and email accounts. It should know which calendars I am syncing to. It should know which applications I have installed, and where all the data, saves, preferences, and other info is for each application. It should be able to back-up up my personal preferences, my live tile layout, and all the other tweaks I have made.
And it should do this not just to SkyDrive, but give me the option to dump this out to another computer either over the air, or over USB.
Why? Because the goal should be that if I need to reset my device, or it is swapped out for a new device, I want a one touch restore. I want my phone back the way it was… and it does it for me! If I’m travelling I don’t want to rely on a 3G data connection (and the cost involved) to get it from the cloud, I want a local copy.
A back-up is only as good as the data taken off the device, and the data put back on the device.

backupsp_mainssAAWP’s suggestion to Microsoft?

Here’s How To Fix It

Dear Microsoft,
It’s simple. Please look up ‘back-up’ and ‘restore’ in a dictionary and just do it.
My own, slightly more detailed suggestion would be to allow users to have a choice about what is backed up and what is restored, much like old Windows Mobile utilities offered, and whether the back-up should be stored in the cloud or not.
The current effort is pretty amateurish, and users will discover this only after they are already in crisis.
As AAWP notes, is a proper solution really too much to ask.

3D Printed Nokia Wireless Charger Stand for Nokia Lumia designed

3D Printed Nokia Wireless Charger Stand for Nokia Lumia designed

674x501_878623_763713_1358593066
Taking up the gauntlet thrown down by Nokia when they released 3D printing designs for the Nokia Lumia 820 battery cover, Relief, a Dutch designer, went one better and designed a stand for the Nokia Wireless Charger which effectively turns it into a stand.
He is looking for feedback on his design, which he then hopes to finalize and sell to 3D printer owners.
He writes:
Hi folks! I have come up with a holder for Nokia’s wireless charger. Normally you have to put your 820/920 flat to charge it which makes it difficult to use while charging. With this dock you can convert your flat charger into an angled charger. This way its easier to interact with your smartphone. Lots of people got their charger for free, so i wanted to offer something unique to make the charger more useful. I i am showing this publicly for a discussion on reliability before i open it for sale to you. If you have something to comment about this model, be free to do so! I really appreciate constructive criticism. Especially since i am new to this 3D printing.
At first glance I think I would prefer the cable exit at the bottom rather than the top, and that the arms holding the phone in place be a bit more robust.
We have seen many projects to make the Nokia Wireless charger more useful, and 3D printing by far has the most potential for creating a really polished product. Hopefully in a few years time we will all be having one of these in our homes to make all our gadget fantasies reality.
See the design and express your interest in the stand at Shapeways here.
Update: Relief has updated his design based on the feedback so far, and mentioned in comments that Shapeways should be able sell the completed cradle for around $30.

Telstra Support confirms WP7.8 for end of January, but some handsets will have to wait till March

Telstra Support confirms WP7.8 for end of January, but some handsets will have to wait till March

image
Telstra is relatively open about their update schedule, and have posted this table giving information about the impending Windows Phone 7.8 update.
As expected, the Nokia Lumia 800 update will go into testing soon, and should start rolling out on the 31st January.
The status for the other handsets are however a bit more iffy, with testing and update dates for the HTC Titan, HTC HD7 and Samsung Omnia W still to be confirmed. At least the handsets are on the list however, with expected availability being late February or Early March.
The dates confirm O2 UK’s statement, who said the Nokia Lumia 800 update will be released at the end of January, and O2 Germany, who has confirmed the same date for the Nokia Lumia 710.
O2-WP78twitter-7.8-o2de
It seems Nokia handsets will likely be the first to benefit from the update before it is seen on other devices, possibly because they have given the customization of the software a higher priority.

Reader Question: Are there any apps that you really miss or want?

Reader Question: Are there any apps that you really miss or want?

For the longest time, the people that look at Windows Phone in a negative light always seem to complain the most about a “lack of apps“.  However, since the Windows Phone ecosystem has more than 125 000 apps (some places say 150 000), app count is no longer a major gripe in contrast to other OSes, such as Playbook OS/BB10.
That does not mean that there are all the apps that are seen as “Essential” by users of other platforms.  Many apps are missing.  Now then, the question is for those who jumped from iOS or Android (And even users of Windows Phone from day 1):  What apps do you miss or wish to have?
Post what you believe is essential and missing in the comments below.

Samsung ATIV S delayed to March in the Netherlands

Samsung ATIV S delayed to March in the Netherlands

Pocketinfo.nl claims from sources that Samsung has pushed back the Samsung ATIV S another month further out, with the handset set to arrive in the Netherlands only in March 2013.
There is no explanation for the delay, given that the handset is already in Austria, but Pocketinfo suggests Samsung may be artificially limiting supply so that the AMOLED screens the device use can be used for Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S 3.
They note whole Nokia and HTC brought their A game to Windows Phone 8 Samsung does not seem to have bothered much.

Nokia released 3D printing designs and specifications for Nokia Lumia 820 back cover

Nokia released 3D printing designs and specifications for Nokia Lumia 820 back cover

You could create your own custom rugged shell with 3D printing.
If you have a hankering for a Nokia Lumia 820 back cover that also has a a kick-stand, and you also have a 3D printer (increasingly affordable at around $2000 these days) Nokia has just made it a lot easier to print your own battery cover.
The company, which already uses 3D printing to rapidly prototype phones and cases, have released the full “3D-printing Development Kit” with all the documentation you’ll need, including ”3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices.”
With some modification we can imagine all kinds of great designs that will fit just as snugly as the real thing.
Download the Lumia 820 3D-printing Development Kit (1)(2)(3) at the links supplied.
Is there are particular feature our readers would want to add to their own back cover, as I imagine even if you do not have your own printer, someone who has one could very easily set up their own little cottage industry making our fancies real.  Let us know below.

Windows Phone 7.8 Nokia Bluetooth Share app updated

Windows Phone 7.8 Nokia Bluetooth Share app updated

compartir_por_bluetoothNokia’s exclusive Bluetooth Share software has hit version 2.0.2.2, even before the general roll-out of the Windows Phone 7.8 update.
The software allows users to share pictures and music via Bluetooth, an essential feature in many parts of the world, and users report better compatibility after the update.
The software still needs Windows Phone 7.8 to install, otherwise giving an error that it is not compatible with your phone, and we hope the update suggests the Windows Phone 7.8 is nearer.
If you are lucky enough to already be running Windows Phone 7.8, as an increasing number of newly released Windows Phones are, you can find the updated software in the Windows Phone Store here.

Asus looking to do a Windows Phone, Windows Padfone

Asus looking to do a Windows Phone, Windows Padfone

The Wall Street Journal reports that Asustek Computer Inc.  is in talks with Microsoft to license Windows Phone 8, and may use it in their Padfone hybrid phone/ tablet.
“With our Padfone concept, the phone plus tablet, I think it makes sense for Windows 8,” said Benson Lin, corporate vice president of mobile communication products. “There is no target timeline…but we are interested in making Windows phones.”
Like Nokia, part of his goal is to penetrate the US market. He said the company was in talks with US carriers to launch its phones by next year.
The current Padfone  is a 4.7-inch Android phone that docks into a 10.1-inch tablet and sells for NT$19,901 (US$686) in Taiwan. Asus currently sells its phones in 20 countries in Europe and the Asia Pacific.
With Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 both running the same kernel on ARM the concept is of course imminently doable, but a better candidate may be the upcoming version of Windows 8 designed for small 7 inch tablets code-named Windows Blue.
A Taipei-based Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment.

REDMOND, Wash. — Jan. 16, 2013 — Microsoft Corp. and BMW have signed a patent licensing agreement that gives BMW broad access to the latest Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT).
