New Nokia Lumia 920s now shipped with the Portico update

New Nokia Lumia 920s now shipped with the Portico update

MyNokiaBlog reports that, despite the slow roll-out of the Portico update, much like Windows Phone 7.8 newly manufactured handsets are already shipping out with the latest version of Windows Phone 8 in situ.
This means while those who purchase a NL 920 or 820 in Europe this month will not have to wait another month before the software, which fixes camera issues and adds some bug fixes, is pushed out to the handsets in February.
It is not clear  what the hold-up is in pushing the OS update out, but we can only hope the software reaches handsets rather rapidly in February, rather than via a slow drawn-out process.

Now Google also messes with YouTube playback on Windows Phone

wp_ss_20130112_0001
WPCentral reports that since yesterday YouTube video playback on Windows Phone has been causing issues, in the main when Windows Phone 8 handsets are in desktop mode, when the above request pops up. Searching for an appropriate app produces no results.
On Windows Phone 8 handsets in Mobile mode playback works fine, but of course on Windows Phone 8 the browser ships by default in desktop mode, meaning the experience of Windows Phone 8 users trying to use to view videos on YouTube has just become a lot worse.
Windows Phone 7 users are apparently having even more issues where both desktop and mobile mode no longer work.
Strangely a work-around is to clear your browser cache and restart your phone, suggesting the issue is related to some (probably accidental) backend change by Google, pointing the finger to neglect rather than malice – Google does not of course have any motivation to look after or care about the usage experience of their Windows Phone using customers.

Canaccord Genuity have released the results of their monthly retail checks.  This time it is for the December holiday period, when sales of course peak the most.
The good news for Windows Phone fans are that the two Windows Phone 8 flagships the Nokia Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X, were able to maintain their positions from November to December.
ChannelPartnersOnline, where the data has been culled from, note that this is the first time two Windows Phone devices have been amongst the best sellers in USA two months in the row, and it could be evidence that things are turning around for the OS in USA.

At least UK online retailer Clove does not have to reserve much warehouse space for their Nokia Lumia 920 shipments, as the device has once again sold out on pre-orders even before their stock from Nokia has arrived.
Unfortunately the shipment they were expecting were  delayed till next week, and will only be shipped out from them on the 15th.  The good news is that new stock in all colours are expected on the 18th, which hopefully signal increased supply of the handset.

Nokia Lumia 610 UK’s 4th most popular mobile phone this week according to USwitch Mobile Tracker

mobiletracker
We posted earlier about the increasing market share of Windows Phone in UK. Adduplex data has previously revealed that the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 610 are UK’s most popular Windows Phones, and this week’s data by USwitch has underscored the increasing popularity of the handset, with the Nokia Lumia 610 rising 5 places from the 9th spot last week to the 4th place in USwitch’s list of UK’s most popular mobile phones this week, ranked by deal popularity and sales.
The statistics are derived from uSwitch.com and their network of mobile phone comparison partners.
Hopefully the Nokia Lumia 610’s more competent successor, the Nokia Lumia 620, running Windows Phone 8 and with microSD card expansion, will have a similarly welcome reception in February 2012.

Samsung Omnia W will get WIFI tethering with Windows Phone 7.8 updat

Samsung Omnia W will get WIFI tethering with Windows Phone 7.8 update

WindowsPhoneItaly have been speaking to Samsung Italy and have some good news to share with Samsung Omnia W owners.
They report Samsung saying the roll-out to Windows Phone 7.5 owners of the updated software is now only waiting on Microsoft, and that the update will also bring WIFI tethering to the Samsung Omnia W, a feature that has been missing for a while.
They said:
“The release of new updates (like updating to Windows Phone 7.8) is programmed with timing dictated directly by Microsoft.
When you choose to provide this update, we will also implement the function of tethering Omnia W “.
WP Italy checked again with Samsung support regarding WIFI tethering and they confirmed: “We are working to implement it in the new update.”
WIFI tethering is extra gravy on the Windows Phone 7.8 update, which already brings start screen and lock screen improvements to current 7.5 owners, especially since Samsung owners will not get the extra Nokia apps such as Bluetooth file sharing.

Windows Phone grew more than 400% in UK in 2012: Retailers report strong reaction to new WP8 handsets, better than expected sales

Windows Phone grew more than 400% in UK in 2012: Retailers report strong reaction to new WP8 handsets, better than expected sales

image
UK retailers are reporting that British consumers are reacting strongly to new Windows Phone handsets.
MobileToday.co.uk notes that sales of the new generation of Windows Phones were higher than the last and that retailers and operators alike report a better than anticipated start to sales of Microsoft’s latest phone operating system from both HTC and Nokia.
The improved sales has been to the degree that companies like HTC and Nokia have been reporting shortages of their new Windows Phone 8 smartphones.
Phil Roberson, HTC UK and Ireland executive director, said: ‘We did have some stock shortages early on. We were seeing that demand was exceeding supply. As we go into the New Year, I am optimistic we will be able to start to meet all the demand.  We are really pleased about how Windows Phone is going and we have high hopes for it in 2013.’
Nokia’s shortage woes have been well documented and a spokesman told  Mobiletoday  it was ‘happy’ with the Lumia portfolio’s performance.
MobileToday attributes the improved sales to improved marketing, with a campaign worth about £25m running in the UK. Microsoft is expected to launch a fresh advertising campaign this spring as it looks to build further momentum.
A major reason for the shortages have however been OEMs managing their inventory very cautiously.
Francisco Jeronimo, research manager at IDC said: ‘It’s no surprise demand is high, but you need to be careful in reading the numbers. It’s not as if HTC or Nokia is bringing Samsung or Apple levels of devices to market. It’s extremely important not to overproduce. It’s much better to manage higher demand than leave too many unsold handsets in a warehouse. That would not generate confidence among operators. Even if they sacrifice some sales it’s much better because operators will show confidence in the OS.’
He added that confidence in the operating system will actually be bolstered by HTC running low on stock.
While he did not expect it to happen this year, he still expected Windows Phone to overtake iOS by 2016, second only to Android.
Jeronimo said: ‘The fourth quarter was extremely important and gave consumers the opportunity to see devices at point of sale and try them out. Microsoft is investing a lot of money to promote it and generate knowledge about the platform, but we are expecting a slow growth in the platform this year.’
While the IDC predicted slow growth it is interesting that Statcounter data actually pegs Windows Phone as the fastest growing OS in UK in 2012, by a long margin.
 iOSBlackBerry OSAndroidWindows PhoneSymbianOS
 W2 2012 41.65 32.39 21.05 0.62 2.2
 W 2 2013 44.37 21.4 28.6 3.24 0.52
Growth (YoY)7%-34%36%423%-76%
Over the year Windows Phone added more than 400% to their installed base, and currently has more than 3% of the online mobile users in the country.  iOS only managed to garner 7% YoY growth, while Blackberry lost 34% of their usage and Android gained 36%.
If Windows Phone can only manage to hit half of that growth, or 200%, in 2013, it should grow to around 10% of UK users and much larger retail market share. Pretty good for the OS some ex-Nokians claim no-one wants…

Birdsong leaves the Windows Phone store (who’s that?)

Birdsong leaves the Windows Phone store (who’s that?)

imageBirdsong, a popular twitter client on iOS,  has announced their retirement from the Windows Phone App Store.
Their decision was based in part on Twitter’s restrictions on the number of tokens developers can have, and on their waning popularity.
By itself the news is not noteworthy, but StreetInsiderseems to credit it with a 1.3% drop in Microsoft’s share price, noting
Top App Developer Says Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Phone Marketplace ‘Hasn’t Proven Itself Viable’
The news actually carriers a very different message for developers – if you do not market your app, it will be forgotten – we all know about Rowi and Tweetro and other twitter clients who get their name onto the blogs – posting a press release two years ago will just not do the trick.
With more than 20 million Windows Phones now in the market, the Windows Phone Store has never been more viable – but with more than 120,000 apps in the store it has never been more necessary to promote your apps properly, even if you have a reputation on the other app stores already.

Nokia Spain: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade planned for this month, but it depends on operators

Nokia Spain: Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade planned for this month, but it depends on operators

image
Nokia Spain has let the cat out of the bag, and has revealed when the long-awaited Windows Phone 7.8 is coming to current handsets.
New handsets being sold by Nokia are already shipping with the OS, and now Nokia Spain has said on their Facebook page that the OS upgrade is planned for January.  Somewhat discouragingly however they continued that this would depend on operators, which suggests a slower roll-out that we would hope for.
The translation is as below:
Nokia Spain: How is the home screen of your Lumia? http://nokia.ly/10ng9Bi
Diego Hernán: None of these 3. Still waiting for the update of Windows Phone 7.8 that has these home screens, are taking too long!
Curro Valverde: I have a 7.8 for the past couple of weeks … it is great!
Nokia Spain: Diego Hernan, upgrading to 7.8 is planned for January but it depends on the operators.
The upgrade will bring the new Windows Phone 8 start screen and several useful apps such as a ringtone maker and Bluetooth file transfer app to Nokia handsets, so I am sure there are plenty of Windows Phone users who can not wait to get their hands on it.
Thanks Albert for the tip.

Windows Phone saving HTC’s bacon after all?

Windows Phone saving HTC’s bacon after all?

image
BGR has an interesting theory regarding HTC’s dire finances and the roll of Windows Phone 8.
While we are seeing some reports blaming HTC’s poor Q4 2012, which saw its lowest profit for 8 years, on the company diverting its attention to two Windows Phone handsets, BGR thinks the two devices may have been responsible for pulling the company out of its slump in December.
They observed that its October was atrocious, with a 61% YoY decline, and this improved in November with a 31% YoY decline in revenue, and that revenue in November actually increased 23% from October to November.
December saw saw further improvement, with sales only dropping 18% YoY, and increasing 1.6% from November – something which is actually very unusual as carriers normally reduce orders in December due to the traditional post-holiday slump.
They write:
December 2012 marked the first time HTC actually increased sales from the previous month. That is why the annualized sales decline rate has now corrected smartly from -61% pace to -18% in  just two months.
So yes, Q4 sucked as a quarter. But the monthly numbers now reflect exceptional improvement during the period. This is most likely due to decent demand for the Windows Phone 8X, HTC’s high-end Windows Phone, and strong European demand for the Windows Phone 8S.
HTC may still be stumbling in the Android market, but its new Windows Phones seem to have stopped its revenue collapse and may actually lead to year-on-year sales growth by February.
Of course HTC did release one Android handset, the HTC J Butterfly and Droid DNA, so we ourselves will not jump to the conclusion BGR did, but it does lend some support to the report that HTC 8X sales were “extremely strong in the US”.
Thanks Arun for the tip, graph via Unwiredview.com

Indian Tax Officials Raid Nokia Sriperumbudur Unit In India

Indian Tax Officials Raid Nokia Sriperumbudur Unit In India

Income Tax officials conducted a raid at Nokia’s Sriperumbudur manufacturing unit in Chennai, India. Nokia spokesperson confirmed the raid in in the morning. According to ET, Income tax authorities said they suspect tax evasion to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore(approx $600 million) by Nokia.
We reached out to Nokia to get the following response,
According to the Nokia Spokesperson, “Earlier today, tax officials visited Nokia’s manufacturing unit in Chennai. Nokia is fully cooperating to ensure they get the necessary information to help in their inquiry.
As a global company, Nokia consistently fields a large and steady number of tax queries, audits and assessments. Nokia’s commitment to being a good corporate citizen is firm and unwavering: we always observe applicable laws and rulings in the countries where we operate. This has been a core principle of our operations in India, where Nokia has been present since 1995.”
We hope Nokia comes out clean on this issue, otherwise this will get added to their long list of problems faced by them.

Nokia “categorically denies” Android rumours, looking forward to double digit market share

Nokia “categorically denies” Android rumours, looking forward to double digit market share

MyNokiaBlog reports that recent claims that Nokia was open to Android in the future was in fact incorrect, with Nokia issuing a proper transcript of the comment Stephen Elop made.
The statement reads:
Nokia categorically denies that what Elop said implies anything different from what he has stated over and over for months now.
Do you rule out 100% launching a smartphone based on Android in 2013?
Elop: So, the way I think about it is, in the current war on ecosystems, we are fighting with Windows Phone. That’s what we’re doing. Now, what we’re always doing is asking, how does that evolve? What’s next? What role does HTML5 play? What role does Android or other things play in the future? We’re looking further into the future, but it terms of what we’re bringing to market, and what we’re immediately focused on, we’re focused on Windows Phone.”
The error appears to have arises due to a case of Chinese whispers, with Spanish newspaper El Pais incorrectly transcribing an interview with Stephen Elop, possibly to make their story more exciting, and then Gizmodo Spain and eventually Gizmodo.com reporting on it.
Gizmodo has since updated their story with Nokia’s correction, and notes that Nokia appears to be very happy with the performance of the Nokia Lumia 920, with Stephen Elop listing as one of his goals of 2013 to reach double digit market share again, saying:
Q. What then arises goals for 2013?
A. I can not give specific figures, but the first great object, without setting a date, is to reach a market share in double digits. Then, keep pushing and striking a balance with the other two major ecosystems, Apple and Android.
