The 24K Gold HTC One: A Smartphone Fit for a King

The 24K Gold HTC One: A Smartphone Fit for a King

 0  0 Google +0  0
HTC’s One was arguably one of the most beautiful smartphones to make its debut in 2013. But the all-aluminum handset has nothing on its gold sibling. Valued at $2,500, the 24 carat gold-plated HTC One looks like the kind of smartphone King Midas would strut around with. But you can’t just pick up this smartphone at your local carrier’s store. This bad boy is only available as part of the smartphone maker’s HTC in NYC contest
To enter, users have to just snap a picture of anything they think is beautiful and tweet it with the hashtag “HTCinNYC” and “US.” If the photo is accepted by HTC, you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of two gold HTC Ones. Beyond its luxurious exterior, the gold HTC One is just like any other One. You get a 4.7-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor and 32GB of RAM, not to mention HTC’s wonderful front-mounted BoomSound speakers. There’s no difference in software either. It’s the exact same Android operating system with HTC’s Sense overlay.

Apple MacBook Air (11-inch) vs. Microsoft Surface Pro 2: Face-Off

Apple MacBook Air (11-inch) vs. Microsoft Surface Pro 2: Face-Off

Microsoft’s Surface tablets have been trying to replace your laptop since they launched last year, and the new Surface Pro 2 makes a more compelling argument than ever. Starting at $899 ($999 as reviewed), the Windows 8.1 tablet’s speedy Intel Core processor and sharp touch screen make it a worthy adversary to Apple’s $999 11-inch MacBook Air notebook for those who want a highly portable productivity machine. But which of these two products gets the job done best for under a grand?

The MacBook Air and Surface Pro 2 are built very differently, so you’ll have to decide which of these two portable computers suits you best. The 2013 MacBook Air retains the razor-thin aluminum unibody of its previous incarnations, with a set of black island keys that have become standard for Apple notebooks.
While the Surface Pro 2 can be used as a laptop, the device is a tablet at its core. Like the original Surface Pro, the sequel sports an all-black magnesium-alloy body, with a kickstand that unfolds from the back panel for tabletop use. The Pro has a touch screen that the Air lacks, but Apple’s offering is the only one of the two to provide a keyboard out of the box.

Do you often listen to TED talk (www.ted.com). Check out TED Mobile for Windows Phone.
TED Mobile is an unofficial client to listen to TED talks. You can listen to latest talks or create your own favorite talk list. English subtitle is also provided.
Moreover, you can also download talks to view offline later. This is very helpful as you can download your favorite talks using WiFi, then go out and view the talks when you are going outside. These offline talks will save your 3G data usage, while you can still enjoy the talks on the go. You will not have to endure waiting for slow connection as well.
You can also pin the live tile to your start screen to see the latest talk at just a glance.

Group Tiles update 1.1 brings more customization to your start screen

Group Tiles update 1.1 brings more customization to your start screen

Create a tileCustomize a tileTile on start screen
Group Tiles is a Windows Phone 8 application that allows you to create custom stylist tiles that you can pin to your Start Screen as group headers to visually separate different groups on your Start Screen. This way you can organize your app tiles to groups and finding them will be much easier.
Group Tiles has just been updated to version 1.1.0 that provides you even more tools to customize your tiles.

New Features

  • Change the font size of the tiles.
  • Change the text color, pattern color and icon color of the tiles.
  • Provide a setting option to set what will happen when you tap the generated tiles. You can choose to open the edit page of that tile, or simply do not start the app.
With this Group Tiles 1.1.0, you can now better organize the tiles on your Start Screen.

QRNotes

  • Group Tiles does not create a folder. Group Tiles just generates special tiles that look like a group header so you can visually separate different groups on your Start Screen.
  • Group Tiles cannot support the “wide and short” tile, simply because Windows Phone does not support tiles at that size. Therefore when you create a wide tile, it will have the same height as other wide tiles.

Download

Group Tiles can be downloaded at the Windows Phone Store here or using this QR code.

Ruzzle is a popular word game which arrived on Windows Phone recently. The app has just received an update to version 1.2.1 and while there is no changelog, it appears to address two very annoying issues.
In the earlier version notifications did not open the app, and players were unable to challenge their friends for a match.
WindowsPhonino reports both these issues have now been addressed.
The game costs $2.99, seemingly without a free trial,  and can be found in the Windows Phone Store here.

Analyst claims 6.4 million Windows Phones were sold in China in 2012

Analyst claims 6.4 million Windows Phones were sold in China in 2012

Analysts iMedia Research claims 6.4 million Windows Phones were sold in China in 2012, giving the smartphone OS a 3.8% market share for that year.
This places Windows Phone 4th, with Android holding 68.6 percent,  followed by iOS with 12.8 percent and  Symbian with 12.4 percent.
The Chinese market is currently the world’s biggest smartphone market, and back in September 2012 Stephen Elop himself confirmed that China is also Nokia’s biggest Windows Phone market.
The news is significant due to the recent rumour of Nokia celebrating 2 million Lumia sales in 3 months.  Given than 6.4 million per year equals 1.6 million a quarter, it is far from inconceivable that increasing support from carriers and even better Windows Phone 8 handsets would have raised this number above 2 million per quarter.
While we have had some sites pooh-poohing  the news, I think it would be a rather bad sign for Nokia if sales are not increasing at least at that rate in China.
Do our readers agree? Let us know below.

Samsung Galaxy S IV to help promote Qi wireless charging against rivals

Samsung Galaxy S IV to help promote Qi wireless charging against rivals

Nokia has shown strong commitment to including wireless charging in their Windows Phones, and have even spoken about expanding it down their line.  The greatest risk however to the future of the Qistandard used by Nokia is the adoption of rival standards by heavyweights such as Samsung and Apple.
Now Digitimes reports that Samsung may be looking at adopting Qi for their next big blockbuster, the Galaxy S IV, according to their sources.
Unfortunately it is not expected to be built-in, but rather an additional back, like Samsung has been doing already for a number of handsets. It is still however expected to cement the future of Qi and the Wireless Power Consortium against rivals such as by the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA).
Unfortunately as usual Apple is not playing ball, and while there is rumours that company is also looking at wireless charging, chances are they will be using their own internal “better” standard.
Unfortunately Apple certainly has the power to move the market, especially when it comes to support by 3rd parties and accessory makers, making Samsung’s support for the standard even more important.
Hopefully Apple will decide to sit out this generation and allow Qi, who has licensees like HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, Sony Mobile Communications and of course Nokia, to solidify its position, which will make support in places public places like airprts, coffee shops and restaurants very likely, and make using our Lumias even more enjoyable.

Nokia Lumia 620 competitively priced in India at 14999 INR

Nokia Lumia 620 competitively priced in India at 14999 INR

image

Nokia has made the pricing of the Nokia Lumia 620 official in India, and I think for once Nokia’s critics will be satisfied, as the handset is very competitively priced at 14,999 INR ($273).
This puts the device up against handsets like the HTC One V at Rs 15000 and the Samsung Galaxy S Duo, with both handsets having similar specs.
Nokia has been in the habit of overpricing their handsets recently when they hit the market in India.  Do our readers think they struck the right mark this time? Let us know below.

Investors respond positively to Nokia’s growth ambitions in SEC filing

image
The US stock market has responded positively to Nokia’s 20-F SEC filing, where Nokia repeated their ambition to grow faster than the smartphone market, thereby gaining market share, and maintain an operating margin of 10% or more.
They also expected their Nokia Siemens joint venture to also have a 5-10% profit margin.
Nokia also re-iterated that they expected in the short term Microsoft’s platform support payments to exceed the minimum Windows Phone royalty payments the company will make to Microsoft.
Nokia’s shares have risen 3% earlier today, and is current hovering around 2% up on the day.

Waterproof cover for the Nokia Lumia 620 on the way

Waterproof cover for the Nokia Lumia 620 on the way

a71c94bab03b4cba7e1518f4333bf51a
Sander Teunissen,  B2B Sales Manager for Nokia Netherlands, has tweeted that an IP54 protective cover for the Nokia Lumia 620 is on its way.
The cover would, according to the rating, provide good protection against the ingress of dust and will be resistant to water spray from all directions, though not quite so resistant that you would be able to swim with it.
The cover likely reveals a new enterprise focus for what is usually seen as a youth-orientated smartphone.  In Finland Nokia sells a large number of their smartphones into business, and have already produced a rugged case for the Nokia Lumia 820.
Nokia Russia has told WinPhoneLive.ru that the cover  will not be available immediately, but should hit the market shortly.

[Samsung UNPACKED] Be ready 4 the next Galaxy

smartphonehere.blogspot.com
http://cloudfront2.bostinno.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/SamsungGalaxyS4Video.jpg
Pending the presentation of Samsung Galaxy S4, rumors multiply. The latest evokes the presence of a system for detecting eye movements, to scroll through a page or photos at a glance.

While Samsung raises the pressure before the presentation of the Galaxy S4 March 14 in New York, the news is fueled by rumors on the specifications of the device. One of the latest is reported by the New York Times. Thus, according to an employee of Samsung, the smartphone will feature a technology called Eye Scroll. It would be a system for detecting the position of the eyes would automatically scroll the pages when reading a text on the screen, or move from one photo to another. This is the front camera which is used to detect eye movements.

This information is credible, since the manufacturer has patented this technology in Europe and the United States. In addition, the integration of a detection system view is not new. The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Tab 2 already had a technology called Smart Stay. It allows the phone to see if the user has their eyes on the screen, so as not to activate the automatic standby. Detection technology of eye movements is also not unique to Samsung invention. Chinese manufacturer Haier has already shown an equivalent device for its TVs, which is based on technology developed by the Swedish company Tobii.

Nokia Expresses Support For Apple In Patent Case Against Samsung

Nokia Expresses Support For Apple In Patent Case Against Samsung

Nokia has filed its amicus brief yesterday in court in order to support Apple in the ongoing patent case between Apple ans Samsung. Nokia is supporting Apple’s argument that U.S. patent holders have access to injunctive relief even if a defendant can argue that the accused products potentially implement (or infringe) vast numbers of patents.
Here is the part of the Nokia’s brief submitted to the court,
DESIRABILITY OF AMICUS BRIEF
The district court’s ruling that in order to obtain a permanent injunction against an infringing competitor, a patent holder must also establish a “causal nexus” between the patented feature and the source of demand for the infringing product could cause wide-ranging damage to the United States patent protection landscape. By creating such a rule, the district court has diverged from the precedent of this court and could severely restrict, if not outright eliminate in some circumstances, the ability of a patent holder to obtain injunctive relief.
Amici urge this court to reverse the district court’s order denying permanent injunctive relief, because the new “causal nexus” requirement set forth therein sets a dangerous precedent. This Court has previously determined that while the Supreme Court’s decision in eBay v. MercExchange, L.L.C., 547 U.S. 388, 393 (2006) eliminated any presumption that the holder of an infringed patent is automatically entitled to a permanent injunction, that decision was in no way intended to eliminate the availability of injunctive relief altogether. See Robert Bosch LLC v. Pylon Mfg. Corp., 659 F.3d 1142, 1149 (Fed. Cir. 2011). The “causal nexus” requirement as applied by the district court here, making the evidentiary standard for obtaining a permanent injunction so burdensome and strict that it may rarely, if ever, be met, will essentially lead to a compulsory-licensing system wherein patent holders are forced to license patented technology to competing firms, which could in turn harm incentives to innovate.

Note+ Updated: SkyDrive Backup, Lock Screen Orientation, and More!

Note+ Updated: SkyDrive Backup, Lock Screen Orientation, and More!

Screenshot 01 Screenshot 02 Screenshot 03
Note+, a simple yet delightful note-taking application, was updated today to include one of the most user-requested features: SkyDrive backup.
The feature is really simple, allowing the user to manually upload a backup to the Documents folder on SkyDrive. This backup is secure, created using AES encryption, which makes it impossible to steal information by a person who gets access to the file. Furthermore, it can’t be modified by the user, potentially making it unusable.
Screenshot 03
SkyDrive sync, or the ability to restore the notes using this backup, is coming in the next update. The reason is to exhaustively test this security-critical feature before releasing it to the public, and guarantee a working solution using the Live Connect API.
Other features are included with the update, including a new setting to lock the screen orientation to portrait, and an easier to discover Live Tile which allows the creation of new notes from the Start screen.
You can download Note+ at the Windows Phone Store for US$1.29, and with features like Live Tiles, Speech Recognition, Voice Commands, Lock Screen Notifications, Security PIN, sharing, and more, it’s practically a bargain.
