Microsoft Research Shows Off Windows Phone App That Creates 3D Image Using The Cloud

Microsoft Research Shows Off Windows Phone App That Creates 3D Image Using The Cloud

At 6th Annual TechFest conference at Microsoft, Microsoft Research revealed no.of new projects they were working on. Viral Search, SketchInsight, new Kinect features, are some of them. They also revealed three projects which are several different methods, each of which is capable of producing a 3-D scan of an object pretty much in real time. One involves using a regular Kinect sensor to scan the object, and another involves a green screen and number of other sensors. The third one is interesting because it makes use of a Windows Phone device.
You need to slowly move across the object with this app running on Windows Phone, it takes series of photos and sends it to the cloud where it will be stitched and again sent back to your Windows Phone as an 3D image. Check out the demo above.

Analyst: Microsoft Has Delayed Its Own Smartphone Plans

Analyst: Microsoft Has Delayed Its Own Smartphone Plans

microsoft_surface_phone_8_by_yronimus-d54trfa.jpg
Few months back there were couple of rumors that Microsoft is planning to release its own smartphone hardware in 2013. Now, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek has revealed that Microsoft is pushing back their plans for releasing smartphones.
“Our checks indicate that Amazon’s phone seems to have been delayed. Also the launch of the Surface phone from Microsoft has been pushed out.”
Earlier we saw reports like Microsoft securing China’s Suning for Surface Phone distribution, Microsoft-branded Windows Phone 8 handset to be produced by Foxconn, Microsoft testing Surface Phone with Asian suppliers, Huawei and MediaTek among them and more. The current report that Microsoft is pushing back their plans is in line with theirCFO’s comments at Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference that Microsoft is more focused on the current plan of bringing right set of experiences at the right price points.

Microsoft CFO On Current Mobile Strategy: “Bringing Right Set Of Experiences At The Right Price Points”

Microsoft CFO On Current Mobile Strategy: “Bringing Right Set Of Experiences At The Right Price Points”

Microsoft CFP Peter KlienYesterday we reported about Microsoft CFO commenting on smaller form factors like 7-inch Windows devices at the the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference. At the same conference, he was asked about Microsoft’s mobile strategy. He said that “We’re very focused on continuing the success we have with PCs and taking that to tablets and phones,”.
When asked about whether Microsoft has any alternate plans to see its success in mobile phone, he replied that Microsoft is more focused on the current plan of bringing right set of experiences at the right price points.
“It’s less ‘Plan B’ than how you execute on the current plan,” said Klein. “We aim to evolve this generation of Windows to make sure we have the right set of experiences at the right price points for all customers.”
“It’s probably more nuanced than just you lower prices or raise prices,” said Klein. “It’s less a Plan B and more, how do you tweak your plan, how do you bring these things to market to make sure you have the right offerings at the right price points?”
I think Microsoft’s current strategy is going as per the plan with Windows Phone 8 devices are coming to market that ranges from Nokia Lumia 620 ($250) to Nokia Lumia 920 ($650) which will cater the huge mobile market. What do you think about Microsoft’s strategy?

Microsoft CFO hints at small tablets, large phones and “write once, run anywhere” apps

Microsoft CFO hints at small tablets, large phones and “write once, run anywhere” apps

future windows phone-728-75
At the the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference during a Q&A session on February 13 Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein told attendees that Microsoft was ready to respond to the direction the market was moving when it came to form factors.
When asked about Microsoft’s plans to address the tablet and phone market with device form factors ranging from 4 inches to 13 inches and beyond he said:
"We’ve done a lot of the hard work in the developer platform," Klein said. "We are well set up to respond to demand as we see it."
Currently the mobile Windows line-up has a massive gap between 4.8 inch and 10 inch screen sizes, currently filled on Android and iOS by phablets and 7 inch tablets.
Klein said applications can scale up and down based on form factors, and the company was well set up to deliver a versatile set of experience across form factors, and specifically mentioned 5 inch and 7 and 8 inch screen sizes.
He also mentioned a variety of price points, which will hopefully open the way for cheaper Windows 8 tablets.
He also mentioned the unified kernel between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, and said the company is evolving the underlying application programming interfaces (APIs) that will enable developers of these apps and services to get closer to cross-platform nirvana.
"We are getting closer and closer every day to write once and run anywhere," Klein said.
Microsoft has already made it clear in a job posting that they aimed to get Windows Phone applications to run on Windows tablets and vice versa, writing:
"(T)he code you write for Windows Store apps would just work on the Windows Phone and vice versa."
Windows Phone 8 does not currently support 1080p displays as found on many cutting edge phablets these days, a deficiency which Microsoft will hopefully rapidly address.
Are our readers ready for the clearly coming Windows Phablets? Let us know below.

Developers: Microsoft Provides Tips For Building An Attractive Windows Phone App

Developers: Microsoft Provides Tips For Building An Attractive Windows Phone App

Windows Phone App Star
Microsoft today posted some useful tips focused on developers for creating attractive Windows Phone apps. Even though your app provides unique functionality,  the application’s UI plays an important role in attracting customers. Microsoft listed some basic tips such as choosing the right panorama for your app along with the list of tips in the following three categories.
App tile imageThe appearance of your app icon or tile plays a significant role in how your app is perceived by customers. Building an attractive tile is one of the best ways to draw attention to your app and entice customers to explore your product.
App display nameThe name of your app is another important factor in its appeal to customers. Your app name represents what your app is all about; it gives new customers a preview of the experience and provides a way for existing customers to recommend it to others
App descriptionThe description is your chance to sell your app by fulfilling the customer need. A customer found your app intriguing and decided to click—now it’s your opportunity to persuade them to install it.

Hacker finds Live Tiles in Windows Phone 7.8 thoroughly broken

imageHeathcliff from WP7RootTools has continued his research on the Live Tiles issue of Windows Phone 7.8, and reports that it is even more broken than we first though.
Live tiles have 3 ways of being updated – directly by an app, on schedule and via push notifications. Heathcliff reports that only direct updates via apps worked flawlessly.
He writes:
  • ShellTileSchedule.Start() – This method allows to set a URL to a live-tile-image on an external host. The URL is fetched at predefined intervals. I found that the Shell Tile Scheduler may start behaving erratically under some circumstances. The app from my previous blog-post, did in fact use this method. I have tried to reproduce this behavior in an app of my own. But I have not been able to isolate the situation that triggers this problem. If the problem occurs, there is a serious problem, that may lead to low performance of the phone and high bills from your mobile operator! This behaviour seems to be specific to WP 7.8. So far I have not been able to reproduce it on WP 7.5 and WP 8.
  • HttpNotificationChannel.BindToShellTile() – This method opens a channel to the Microsoft Notification Servers. External sources can post images, text or counters to the Microsoft Notification Servers. This will be routed to the phone. I found this functionality to be completely broken on WP 7.8. It is possible to send a text or counter. But as soon as an URL for a live-tile-image is sent to the phone, the phone immediately closes the endpoint to the server and nothing is updated. I found that when the app completely registers a new endpoint, the live-tile can sometimes be updated once and then the endpoint is closed again. In my case deleting the PushClient Endpoint registry-keys did not help and even a hard-reset did not resurrect the live-tiles. Live-tile notifications still worked only once, or not at all. On WP 7.5 this method just works as expected. I actually hope I did something wrong here. Or else I don’t understand how this could ever get past the Microsoft Quality Assurance department.
The last bit is a rather telling indictment of Windows Phone 7.8, suggesting rather little attention was paid to what was intended to be a mere cosmetic update, rather like a facelift which went horribly wrong and caused your nose to fall off.

Microsoft Officially Announces A $2 billion Loan To The Group To Take Dell Private

Microsoft Officially Announces A $2 billion Loan To The Group To Take Dell Private

After lots of leaks, Microsoft has today officially announced that they will be providing a loan of $2 billion to the group that will take Dell private. As an obvious reason, Microsoft has cited the long term success of the entire PC ecosystem behind this proposal.
Press Release:
REDMOND, Wash. – Feb. 5, 2013 – “Microsoft has provided a $2 billion loan to the group that has proposed to take Dell private.  Microsoft is committed to the long term success of the entire PC ecosystem and invests heavily in a variety of ways to build that ecosystem for the future.
“We’re in an industry that is constantly evolving. As always, we will continue to look for opportunities to support partners who are committed to innovating and driving business for their devices and services built on the Microsoft platform.”

ROUND ROCK, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Dell Inc. today announced it has signed a definitive merger agreement under which Michael Dell, Dell’s Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, in partnership with global technology investment firm Silver Lake, will acquire Dell.
Under the terms of the agreement, Dell stockholders will receive $13.65 in cash for each share of Dell common stock they hold, in a transaction valued at approximately $24.4 billion. The price represents a premium of 25 percent over Dell’s closing share price of $10.88 on Jan. 11, 2013, the last trading day before rumors of a possible going-private transaction were first published; a premium of approximately 35 percent over Dell’s enterprise value as of Jan. 11, 2013; and a premium of approximately 37 percent over the average closing share price during the previous 90 calendar days ending Jan. 11, 2013. The buyers will acquire for cash all of the outstanding shares of Dell not held by Mr. Dell and certain other members of management.
The Dell Board of Directors acting on the recommendation of a special committee of independent directors unanimously approved a merger agreement under which Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners will acquire Dell and take the company private subject to a number of conditions, including a vote of the unaffiliated stockholders. Mr. Dell recused himself from all Board discussions and from the Board vote regarding the transaction.
A Special Committee was formed after Mr. Dell first approached Dell’s Board of Directors in August 2012 with an interest in taking the company private. Led by Lead Director Alex Mandl, the Special Committee retained independent financial and legal advisors J.P. Morgan and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP to advise the Special Committee with respect to its consideration of strategic alternatives, the acquisition proposal and the subsequent negotiation of the merger agreement.
The Special Committee also engaged a leading management consulting firm to conduct an independent analysis, including a review of strategic alternatives for Dell and opportunities for the company as a public entity, and thereafter engaged Evercore Partners.
The merger agreement provides for a so-called “go-shop” period, during which the Special Committee – with the assistance of Evercore Partners – will actively solicit, receive, evaluate and potentially enter into negotiations with parties that offer alternative proposals. The initial go-shop period is 45 days. Following that period, the Special Committee will be permitted to continue discussions and enter into or recommend a transaction with any person or group that submitted a qualifying proposal during the 45-day period. A successful competing bidder who makes a qualifying proposal during the initial go-shop period would bear a $180 million (less than 1 percent) termination fee. For a competing bidder who did not qualify during the initial go-shop period, the termination fee would be $450 million.
Mr. Mandl, lead director of Dell’s Board of Directors, said: “The Special Committee and its advisors conducted a disciplined and independent process intended to ensure the best outcome for shareholders. Importantly, the go-shop process provides a real opportunity to determine if there are alternatives superior to the present offer from Mr. Dell and Silver Lake.”
Mr. Dell said: “I believe this transaction will open an exciting new chapter for Dell, our customers and team members. We can deliver immediate value to stockholders, while we continue the execution of our long-term strategy and focus on delivering best-in-class solutions to our customers as a private enterprise. Dell has made solid progress executing this strategy over the past four years, but we recognize that it will still take more time, investment and patience, and I believe our efforts will be better supported by partnering with Silver Lake in our shared vision. I am committed to this journey and I have put a substantial amount of my own capital at risk together with Silver Lake, a world-class investor with an outstanding reputation. We are committed to delivering an unmatched customer experience and excited to pursue the path ahead.”
“Michael Dell is a true visionary and one of the preeminent leaders of the global technology industry,” said Egon Durban, a Silver Lake Managing Partner. “Silver Lake is looking forward to partnering with him, the talented management team at Dell and the investor group to innovate, invest in long-term growth initiatives and accelerate the company’s transformation strategy to become an integrated and diversified global IT solutions provider.”
Following completion of the transaction, Mr. Dell, who owns approximately 14 percent of Dell’s common shares, will continue to lead the company as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and will maintain a significant equity investment in Dell by contributing his shares of Dell to the new company, as well as making a substantial additional cash investment. Dell will continue to be headquartered in Round Rock, Texas.
The transaction will be financed through a combination of cash and equity contributed by Mr. Dell, cash funded by investment funds affiliated with Silver Lake, cash invested by MSD Capital, L.P., a $2 billion loan from Microsoft, rollover of existing debt, as well as debt financing that has been committed by BofA Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Credit Suisse and RBC Capital Markets (in alphabetical order), and cash on hand. There is no financing condition.
The transaction is subject to other customary conditions, including receipt of required regulatory approvals, in addition to the Dell stockholder approvals described above. The transaction is expected to close before the end of the second quarter of Dell’s FY2014.
For further information regarding all terms and conditions contained in the definitive merger agreement, please see Dell’s Current Report on Form 8-K, which will be filed in connection with this transaction.
J.P. Morgan and Evercore Partners are acting as financial advisors and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is acting as legal advisor to the Special Committee of Dell’s Board of Directors. Goldman, Sachs & Co. is acting as financial advisor and Hogan Lovells US LLP is acting as legal advisor to Dell. Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz is acting as legal advisor to Mr. Dell. BofA Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Credit Suisse and RBC Capital Markets (in alphabetical order) are acting as financial advisors to Silver Lake, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP is acting as legal advisor to Silver Lake.

Microsoft announces support for Alipay in Chinese Windows Phone Store

Microsoft announces support for Alipay in Chinese Windows Phone Store

image_5F00_thumb_5F00_4503824C
In a blog post Microsoft announced support for Alipay, a Paypal-like network, for Windows Phones in China.
Windows Phone 8 owners in China can now pay for apps or games in the Windows Phone Store with the country’s most popular e-payment service. On the phone, customers can make purchases with Alipay or local credit and debit cards. The Windows Phone Store  requires Alipay for all payments.
Alipay payments will not be available for Windows Phone 7.8, who will need to use international credit cards.
Xbox Live games are now also supported in China.
Lastly apps now have a new “sold by” field which appears to be a kind of affiliate system where networks like MSN China, Sina, and Tencent get to sell Windows Phone Store apps, and also bear some responsibility for the support of the apps.

Microsoft ropes in Samsung for Windows Phone Business 2 Business push

Microsoft ropes in Samsung for Windows Phone Business 2 Business push

samsung2_505_082912112202
The biggest reason Samsung is still supporting Windows Phone despite its burgeoning Android ecosystem is its desire to penetrate the business market, with Samsung UK vice president of IT, Graham Long famously saying:
"The launch of Windows 8 really provides us with that opportunity where we will have everything from a smartphone through to a tablet through the PC through to the all-in-one," Long told V3.
"For us it provides a unique opportunity at the time of launch to go out to the market and showcase everything we have that’s available."
"In discussions we’ve had with IT directors and chief information officers we’ve been able to tell them we’ll be able to provide a smartphone, a tablet, a PC and an all-in-one utilising the IT they’ve built their business on for the last 25 years," Long told V3.
"What we’re seeing with the launch of Windows 8 is, from a computing and smartphone perspective, the ability to move into that space and have a competitive advantage."
Now Microsoft has added to that statement, with the Head of B2B marketing at Windows Phone Rikke Rasmussen telling Mobile News:
“Business is very important to us – [WP8] sits really well with SMBs. There are a lot of BlackBerry customers that are looking at other options, the full integration with Windows 8 makes sense and is cost effective for them.
Rasmussen said Microsoft will be going into pitches with Samsung “as soon as the manufacturer is ready” which will be  “very soon” following the launch of the Ativ S device earlier this month.
The company was however not abandoning Nokia and HTC.
“From our perspective, we will be trying to stay neutral with the manufacturers. We will be doing joint stuff with Samsung, as we do with HTC and Nokia, as soon as they are ready.”
Rasmussen told Mobile News a number of high-profile businesses have already switched from BlackBerry to Windows Phone, including the recent deal with HML Skipton, the UK’s fourth largest building society.

Microsoft: Windows Phone Related Revenue Increased $546 Million

Microsoft: Windows Phone Related Revenue Increased $546 Million

Microsoft announced its quarterly financial reports yesterday. It posted a record revenue and an impressive profit despite slow industry momentum around PCs. They also revealed some numbers around Windows Phone revenue for the first time. The following was mentioned in their statement,
Windows Phone revenue increased $546 million, including patent licensing revenue and increased sales of Windows Phone licenses.
They have just mentioned that Windows Phone revenue grew $546 million that includes patent licensing revenue, sales of Windows Phone licenses to Nokia, HTC, Samsung, etc,. I think the revenue of $546 million(approx) in a single quarter is really good. Based on the previous numbers from Google regarding Android revenue, I guess the current Android revenue will be below Microsoft’s Windows Phone related revenue for sure.
What do you think?

Microsoft Signs Patent Licensing Agreement With BMW

For the past few years, we have heard many patent licensing agreement between Microsoft and Android OEMs, ODMs, etc,. Today, Microsoft announced a patent licensing agreement with BMW which gives the automaker access to the latest Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) file format.
Press Release:
REDMOND, Wash. — Jan. 16, 2013 — Microsoft Corp. and BMW have signed a patent licensing agreement that gives BMW broad access to the latest Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT). BMW will utilize exFAT technology to enhance the digital entertainment offerings in its line of automobiles. exFAT is a modern file system from Microsoft that facilitates large files for audiovisual media and enables seamless data portability and an easy interchange between desktop PCs and other electronic devices.
