Windows Phone Dev Centre will now allow multiple XAPs for the same Windows Phone 7 and 8 app

Windows Phone Dev Centre will now allow multiple XAPs for the same Windows Phone 7 and 8 app

image_5F00_196DF32F
Here is an interesting development for Windows Phone Developers. The latest improvements to the Windows Phone Dev Centre allows developers to basically publish two different apps for Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 under the same name, with different app descriptions and screen shots.
This allows developers to target the new features and APIs of Windows Phone 8 without having to worry about maintaining compatibility with Windows Phone 7.
On the Windows Phone Developer Blog, Bernardo Zamora writes:
One of the key advantages of multiple XAPs per app GUID is that you can associate different metadata, such as long description, with each XAP. [...] And you don’t have to worry about your app showing up twice or end users finding the wrong version for their device. Our catalog detection will show your 7.x app to those with Windows Phone 7 devices and the 8.0 app to those with Windows Phone 8 devices.
Windows Phone users will only be shown the version of the app applicable to them.

Samsung ATIV S gets Chinese network certification

Samsung ATIV S gets Chinese network certification

807207
The Samsung ATIV S has made the trip to China to bolster the Windows Phone cause in the country.
The handset has not been announced on any carrier, but has just passed through Ministry of Industry certification, and may go to the large unlocked market in the country.
If sold there however it is not expected to be cheap.  CNMO.com expects it to be around 4,000 Yuan or $642, making it a rather premium device. It will of course be the largest-screened Windows Phone there, a feature that is particularly valued in China and which may help justify the price.

Changewave once again confirms Windows Phone customer satisfaction higher than Android’s in USA

Changewave once again confirms Windows Phone customer satisfaction higher than Android’s in USA

smartphoneos-satisfaction
Consumer Research company ChangeWave polled 4,061 North Americans last December about their smartphone opinions, and once again found Windows Phone scored very well, despite its small market share.
53% of Windows Phone users were “very satisfied” with their phones, 5% higher than Android, but still below iOS at 71%.
Nokia was a great beneficiary of the of the switch, with their customer satisfaction rate increasing from only 23% of users “very satisfied” in December 2011 to 56% now being “very satisfied”, ahead of Samsung who scored 55%.
Windows Phone has been steadily gaining market share, and with more apps arriving these scores will hopefully continue to increase, making owners great ambassadors for the product.

The US Windows Phone market share grew 50% between Q2 and Q3 2012

The US Windows Phone market share grew 50% between Q2 and Q3 2012

Q3-2012-US-Smartphone-OS-market-share
At first glance it does not appear to be the greatest news, with Windows Phone only holding 2% share in this period.
However when compared to Q2 2012, when Windows Phone only held 1.3% share, meaning 0.7% of more than 120 million smartphone owners adopted Windows Phone between Q2 and Q3 2012. Comscore has confirmed to me the 2% represents only Windows Phone devices, with Windows Mobile lumped into the other category.
This is about 54% growth from one quarter to another, compared to 3% growth for iOS and 2% growth for Android.
In terms of absolute numbers the numbers are not that impressive, but still interesting – Windows Phone attracted 0.7% new Windows Phone users, while iOS and Android both added 1% – pretty good performance for a new OS, and before the Nokia Lumia 920 arrived.
We know Nielsen does not support this, but if we multiply Nielsen’s percentages by Comscore’s September numbers, which shows 119 million smartphone users in the 3 months ending September 2012, we have about 2.4 million Windows Phone users in the USA, 41.7 million iOS users and 61.9 million Android users.
In June 2012, using the same method, and with 110 million US smartphone users, we have 1.43 million Windows Phone users, 37.4 million iOS users and 56.1 million Android users.
This would mean Windows Phone added around 1 million users from Q2-Q3 2012, while iOS added 4.3 million users, and 5.8 million users.
Clearly still a long way to go, but with Windows Phone growing faster than the market and actually gaining share, who is to say we will not get there eventually?

Windows Phone app downloads, revenue has doubled

Windows Phone app downloads, revenue has doubled

imageTNW reports that Microsoft Senior Director of Windows Phone Apps, Todd Brix, has told them that in the last 60 days Windows Phone App Downloads and Developer Revenue has doubled.
Microsoft did not reveal the reasons behind the change, but a few theories are probable:
1) a large number of new Windows Phone users.
2) a large number of new devices purchased by existing owners, stimulating new app downloads.
3) new revenue generating avenues via in-app purchases.
It is most likely a combination of 1 and 2, and of course most of us hope that the main reason is a massive influx of new Windows Phone users.
It is unlikely that Microsoft will clarify the issue at any point, but all by itself a large increase in revenue and downloads is just what Windows Phone needs to attract new developers and keep existing ones.
Related to this Microsoft is running a Developer App contest with the prize being having you app featured on a TV spot in US.  Smaller prizes also include Nokia Lumia 920 phones.  The contest is open to entrants worldwide. Read more about that here.

W-Support – A total disaster

W-Support – A total disaster

Lumia-920-745x559-d7b7b01b35d04557[1]
On the 27th Dec. 2012 the camera flash of my Lumia 920 stopped working. Annoyed (this is the 4th defect I had with the Lumia 920!) I decided to send it to repair instead of returning it… So I filled in the service task and sent my device to W-Support – a service partner of many OEMs including Samsung and Nokia in Germany.
Except for my device arriving on the 4th January, which was the fault of DHL, everything progressed well… at first! Soon after arrival on the 4th the online repair status was updated to “device arrived; repair in progress” – and did not change till the 11th Jan..
The website says the normal repair for Nokia devices takes 5 days inclusive shipping so I was somewhat annoyed at having to wait but when I checked the status on the 11th I at first was pretty happy: After so many days without a phone the repair finally was finished!
The status was “forwarding to shipment department”… I thought the device would leave the same day, which would make the status change to “shipping”… but no such luck! When I checked the status first it was about 1 pm… and that’s the way things stayed until Saturday, with the phone finally arriving on Monday.
Today I got my device back and with it the worst part of the whole experience… it was NOT repaired! The device looked like it hadn’t  even been checked! The not working camera LED is such an obvious defect, but they sent the device back unfixed (but on the invoice was written: “repair successful”). Also, the device inside the package was TURNED ON and not even completely reset.
When I called the support the lady on the phone told me the following, translated from German:
“Well, we did not really know what do to with the phone. So we send it to Nokia, but they sent it back to us”
I find that story somewhat fishy, as  the repair would have taken much longer plus the online status would have said so.
This was not the only problem I have had with W-Support. In 2011 the display of my Lumia 800 had some dead pixels. The display needed to be changed so I did the same as with my Lumia 920: I sent it to W-Support. After 5 days (yes, it actually seems to work within 5 days) the device came back. Everything worked perfectly, except…
… W-Support damaged the unibody of my device. There were indentations around the screen which seem to have been caused by pulling out the screen with a screwdriver.
You may think it was only me having a streak of bad luck but after a bit of research I found out I am not the only one disappointed with W-Support’s “support”.
Unfortunately I didn’t have the option to let my devices be repaired somewhere else, but if you have, definitely choose somebody else to fix your device.
Have our other German readers been disappointed by Nokia’s support partner? Let us know below.

Microsoft Delivers Windows Embedded 8 Handheld for Enterprise

Microsoft Delivers Windows Embedded 8 Handheld for Enterprise

imageMicrosoft is working with device manufacturersMotorola SolutionsIntermecHoneywell,Ingenicoand Bluebird on a new generation of devices powered by Windows Embedded 8 Handheld, the next generation of the Windows Embedded Handheld platform built on Windows Phone 8. At the National Retail Federation (NRF) Annual Convention & EXPO this week, Microsoft isshowcasing a range of technologies that enable retailers to realize hidden value by fostering the flow of data across their infrastructures, driving strategic insights and fueling business decisions.
“From the retailer’s backroom to its store aisles and its digital channels, the front line for gaining customer loyalty is diverse,” says Kevin Dallas, general manager of Windows Embedded at Microsoft. “One of the biggest goals for retailers is to give sales associates the technology they need to be effective at their jobs, including the handheld devices specifically designed for these environments. It’s not about impressing the customer with technology; it’s about taking advantage of technology that transforms the customer experience, and with our partners, we’re creating security-enhanced, enterprise-class devices that help retailers do just that.”
The devices offer the latest technology support, including intuitive touch usability; support for mobile point-of-service (POS) scenarios such as line-busting; and new application interfaces that make it easy to build line-of-business applications for taking advantage of peripherals, such as barcode scanners, magnetic stripe readers and receipt printers.
“The landscape for retailers and enterprises across many industries is undoubtedly evolving, with handheld devices continuing to emerge as strategic assets that empower workers, service customers and fuel vital operational intelligence to the back end,” says Girish Rishi, senior vice president of Enterprise Solutions for Motorola Solutions. “By extending Windows Phone 8, Windows Embedded 8 Handheld will provide Motorola Solutions’ customers with devices that deliver a rich, flexible experience for employees and an intelligent, connected experience for the customer and retailer.”
The Home Depot is one of the first companies to benefit from this deep level of collaboration between Microsoft and Motorola Solutions, with their Windows Embedded 8 Handheld  app featuring advanced tools such as voice search and easy-to-use, touch-enabled business apps — such as those on a typical Windows Phone 8 smartphone — in devices that can still withstand the daily rigor of the retail environment.
That requires technology that not only simplifies processes such as inventory management and business analytics, but also speeds up checkout, seamlessly connects online and store processes such as buy-online-pickup-in-store, enables quick communication between associates, and puts information at the fingertips of sales associates to help them easily find products and the product information they need to provide great service.
The handheld devices are part of a larger solution that also includes in-store Windows PCs, where retail associates can get more information about promotions, provide project estimates and schedule home installation appointments.
Managers use a touch-enabled Store Management dashboard to gain quick access to operational analytics, POS data, building maintenance controls and the ability to control in-store digital signage.
Organizations can benefit from enterprise-class manageability, and both Microsoft and Windows Phone 8 management partners already offer solutions that support Windows Embedded 8 Handheld.
Software developers will benefit from the Windows Phone 8 support of Visual Studio 2012, and enterprise application developers can start developing applications today using theWindows Phone 8 software development kit (SDK). Microsoft is also delivering new, common application programming interfaces (APIs) for industry peripherals such as magnetic stripe readers; Europay, MasterCard, Visa payment readers; receipt printers; and bar code scanners and imagers, making it easier for developers to create line-of-business applications that are supported across all Windows Embedded 8 Handheld devices with those peripherals.
Later this year, Microsoft will release the Windows Embedded 8 Handheld SDK, which will provide the additional APIs for accessing industry peripherals. Enterprises and developers alike will also benefit from the compatibility with Windows Phone 8 applications. Windows Embedded 8 Handheld supports off-the-shelf business and productivity applications such as Microsoft Lync,Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Dynamics for Retail.

Top 10 Takeaways From CES 2013

I’m recovering from a Las Vegas hangover. And it has nothing to do with partying. I’m talking about seeing dozens of companies over the course of several days, running to back-to-back-to-back meetings and spending one very late night deliberating our Best of CES Awards with the LAPTOP team. In between all of this I had the opportunity to discuss the big CES trends on CNBC and Fox Business from the show floor. As I emerge from a fog of next-best-thing spin, I thought it might be helpful to summarize some of the lessons I took away from the show, both for those whose heads are still spinning like mine and for the wrongheaded CES doomsayers who decided to sit this one out.

Thanks to crowd-funding sites like Kickstarter, startup companies generating lots of online buzz are leveraging that attention to thousands of attendees who have never had the opportunity to see these inventions in the flesh. Oculus VR wowed onlookers--and me--with its Rift virtual reality gaming headset. Meanwhile, the folks from Pebble finally let reporters check out its elegant and connected smart watch.
I didn't get a chance to ride it, but the weight-sensing ZBoard skateboard turned a lot of heads at CES. Last but not least, I was impressed by an app that came out of AT&T's hack fest, one that lets a child ring multiple family members with a single call. As some bigger companies eschew Vegas to hold their own events and have the spotlight all to themselves, it will be critical for CES to give smaller innovators a bigger stage.

WhatsApp promising “a lot of improvements” in the next release of their Windows Phone app

WhatsApp promising “a lot of improvements” in the next release of their Windows Phone app

image
WhatsApp is a pretty important app on Windows Phone, but also one which does not work terribly well and which could be a lot better.
As one reviewer on the Windows Phone Store notes:
The blackberry version is better than this windows phone version there’s no simple way to add someone on it and you cant look at there display pics defo needs to me made simpler and straightforward needs alot of work
The app only has a 3 1/2 out of 5 star score there.
It seems in some ways the WhatsApp team acknowledge this,  as they responded to a complaint to “fix your app for Windows Phone” by saying:
You will see a lot of improvements in the next batch of releases.
Hopefully they will address one of the principle issues outstanding – the use of the Background Audio API for receiving messages, which tends to cause all kinds of issues  and unpredictable behaviours.
Is there any specific improvements you would like to see in the WhatsApp app? Let us know below.

Rumour: Huawei to bring a 7.7 mm Windows Phone 8 handset to Mobile World Congress

Rumour: Huawei to bring a 7.7 mm Windows Phone 8 handset to Mobile World Congress

0835071125797608608350721935889974
The Chairman of Huawei, Yu Chengdong, has once again confirmed on Weibo that the company will be bringing two handsets to Mobile World Congress 2013, which is early February in Barcelona.
He said:
The CES show, we released most of three global smartphone products, are: maximum screen Mate, the most powerful D2 and the best value the WP8 mobile phone W1 2 month Barcelona MWC Mobile World Congress will also release two most of the world’s smartphone products. Nobody can remember, can only remember the first one, we want the consumer to see, most of the world first from Huawei! Keep making progress, beyond!
Current speculation is that one of these handsets will be a new but long rumoured Windows Phone 8 handset, the Ascend W2, which will according the rumour be the thinnest Windows Phone on its release, measuring only 7.7 mm thick.
Despite this the device will still be well specced and priced, with a 4.5 inch HD screen, super-sensitive touch, 8 megapixel camera and the usual dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, and massive 2800 mAh battery capacity, all for only 3200 Yuan ($515).
The handset is apparently aimed at competing directly with the Nokia Lumia 920, but with a much more attractive price.
A 6.1 inch Windows Phone is also rumoured, but if shown will likely be released a lot later.
Would our readers buy one of these super-phones? Let us know below.

Nokia India To Focus On Lumia 920 For Marketing New Windows Phone 8 Devices

Nokia India To Focus On Lumia 920 For Marketing New Windows Phone 8 Devices

Nokia launched its Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices few days back. Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 are already in some retail stores and many online retailers are taking orders for these devices. WMPoweruser spoke with Vipul Mehrotra, Director & Head of Smart Devices at Nokia India about the launch in India and how they have planned it to market these devices. Vipul told us that Nokia’s marketing efforts in coming months will be focusing on Nokia Lumia 920 and its unique features such as low-light camera, OIS video recording capabilities and wireless charging.
The devices are supplied for Tier-I cities for now and will be expanded to other cities soon. He also revealed that there may be a demand/scarcity of Lumia 920 as we have already seen in some countries due to less supply. Nokia has already trained thousands of retail store employees on Lumia 920 and these people will be showing off Lumia 920′s capabilities by comparing them with competing devices.
For example, Vipul told us that store employees will be recording a video by carrying Lumia 920 and some competing device together around the store to demonstrate OIS to customers and the same kind of stuff to show off Lumia 920 low light capabilities. Even in the media event held few days back, Nokia demonstrated Lumia 920 by  flying a quad-copter with the Lumia 920 and competing Samsung Galaxy S III attached to it to showoff the 920′s video.
When asked whether current Windows Phone 7.x devices such as Lumia 900 will see a price drop, Vipul answered that Nokia’s focus will be on getting more Windows Phone 8 devices to the market as opposed to older generation devices.
Update: Nokia updated us that our information regarding demand/scarcity of Lumia 920 in the above post is incorrect.

MangaTronic Free, turns your photos into Mangas !

MangaTronic Free, turns your photos into Mangas !

I have created a new application for Windows Phone 7/8 that looks really great for manga lovers ! And I think it’s the first one in its category…
The application is ‘MangaTronic Free’ and allow you to  take/select photos and stylizes it to look like a hand drawn photo from a Manga – Japanese comic books – with a very defined art style.
All Otakus should be happy ;) The app is really simple:
  • After taking or selecting a photo, select a manga filter and run the final rendering step. You will have a cool manga drawing.
  • You can also select another effect after the rendering step just by pressing the back key.
  • You can save or send the result on your Facebook Wall.
Actually 2 kinds of rendering are available; dot shadows and line shadows.
A Facebook page is available to follow the app and to post your results:
