Nokia Lumia 920 getting product placement in hit shows Arrow and House of Lies

Nokia Lumia 920 getting product placement in hit shows Arrow and House of Lies

ArrowL920
While Windows Phones may still be a relatively rare sight in real life, one certainly would not get the impression from watching TV, where various Windows Phones have been showing up all over the place.
The latest is the Nokia Lumia 920 showing up on the hit show “Arrow” Season 1, Episode 11. The screen shot above is from the show, but clearly the prop man could not resist adding some unnecessary chrome to the Windows Phone interface.
The handset has also been showing up in the last 2 episodes of the House of Lies, both in their red and Black versions.
The high level of product placement is all part of Microsoft’s strategy to give consumers permission to buy a Windows Phone, despite their friends and relatives not owning it, due to familiarity built up by celebrity endorsements and product placements.

Samsung ATIV Odyssey now available for free from BestBuy

The Samsung ATIV Odyssey is priced the same as the Nokia Lumia 822, but the expectation has always been that it would be the cheaper handset.
It seems BestBuy will be making this a reality, with the US retailer offering the handset for free on two year contract, a $50 discount.  It does come with a hefty $350 Early Termination Fee, but is otherwise available for new contracts, upgrades, or adding a new line to an existing plan.
If you are interested in this attractive deal find the handset at Best Buy Mobile Solutions here.

Wells Fargo working on a Windows Phone app

Wells Fargo working on a Windows Phone app

wells fargo windows phone app email proof
Banking applications are very important, so even one by small banks matter.  Wells Fargo is however no small name, and we are happy to report that they company is not only considering, but already working on a Windows Phone app.
WPDaily reports Wells Fargo Customer Service sent the above email in which they confirm they are "already working on this application and plan to make it available in the future".
We do not know when the app will become available but presumably the bank, which already has apps for the iPhone, Android, Blackberry and the Palm Pre will not keep Windows Phone waiting for too much longer.

Request for Windows Phone Bluetooth HID support gets good traction on user voice

Request for Windows Phone Bluetooth HID support gets good traction on user voice

image
We saw some great expansion of Bluetooth functionality in Windows Phone 8, but 3rd parties cant solve all problems, and after Bluetooth File transfer, the next big battle is over Bluetooth Human imageInterface Device support, which would allow Windows Phones to use external Bluetooth keyboards and game controllers.
While I think the poster on Microsoft’s Suggestion site is being a bit overdramatic in referring to “Windows Phone loses usability, market visibility and relevance”, support for standards such as Bluetooth HID will allow Windows Phones to access a large number of accessories designed for other operating systems, allowing Windows Phone user to piggyback on the accessory ecosystem for other larger operating systems, similar to the way we can use Bluetooth Stereos designed for iPhones and Android handsets.
For that reason I think Bluetooth HID support is a great idea. If you agree let us know below, and vote at the User Voice site here.

Cinemagraph-for-Nokia-Lumia-WP8
Nokia has updated two of their exclusive apps.
Nokia’s Cinemagraph app has been updated.  The app, which produces animated gifs is now easier to use, supports a wider range of Lumia phones and can now create both portrait and landscape cinemagraphs.
Nokia also updated their PhotoBeamer app, which allows users to show their Lumia photos on any screen with a web browser.
Unfortunately this software did not come with a changelog, but it seems the app is also now easier to use with a better workflow and better picture quality.
Cinemagraph can be found here and Photobeamer here.

Digitimes also revealed that Qualcomm and MediaTek are expected to join with Microsoft for development of the reference design.

Three UK’s Pay as You Go prices for the Nokia Lumia 620 has been revealed.
Coolsmartphone has grabbed a picture of the most recent Argos circular, showing that the Windows Phone 8 dual-core smartphone will run at £199 on PAYG with a £10 top-up on Three UK.
That makes it £50 more than the Nokia Lumia 610 handset it replaces, which is sure to affect sales, but still relatively affordable for the specs, and of course the price will likely drift down in time.
Argos has the handset  listed as coming soon on their official website but it should become available shortly, with the circular noting a 4th February release date.

Microsoft: Windows Phone Related Revenue Increased $546 Million

Microsoft: Windows Phone Related Revenue Increased $546 Million

Microsoft announced its quarterly financial reports yesterday. It posted a record revenue and an impressive profit despite slow industry momentum around PCs. They also revealed some numbers around Windows Phone revenue for the first time. The following was mentioned in their statement,
Windows Phone revenue increased $546 million, including patent licensing revenue and increased sales of Windows Phone licenses.
They have just mentioned that Windows Phone revenue grew $546 million that includes patent licensing revenue, sales of Windows Phone licenses to Nokia, HTC, Samsung, etc,. I think the revenue of $546 million(approx) in a single quarter is really good. Based on the previous numbers from Google regarding Android revenue, I guess the current Android revenue will be below Microsoft’s Windows Phone related revenue for sure.
What do you think?

GSMA Introduces The NFC Experience For Mobile World Congress, iPhones need not apply

GSMA Introduces The NFC Experience For Mobile World Congress, iPhones need not apply

The GSMA have announced the NFC Experience at Mobile World Congress, an interactive experience through which exhibitors, vendors, and attendees use mobile Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to exchange information and conduct transactions.
“We’re excited to launch the NFC Experience for Mobile World Congress, as it provides attendees to the event the opportunity to experience first-hand the power of NFC technology both throughout the Mobile World Congress venue, as well as in the city of Barcelona,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA. “We hope that all attendees will take advantage of the many benefits of NFC, from venue access to retail transactions to transport, among others.”
As part of the new NFC Experience at Mobile World Congress, the GSMA will showcase an integrated range of mobile NFC services. Attendees with NFC-enabled handsets will be able to take advantage of NFC technology at locations throughout the Fira Gran Via and in the city. NFC touch points will be abundant throughout Congress, rewarding those who ‘tap’ with instant access to information such as downloads on the conference sessions and keynotes, as well as information on restaurants and tourist attractions around Barcelona itself.
The NFC Experience features:
  • NFC Centre – A dedicated zone in the heart of Congress Square will be one of the key locations to visit and see NFC-enabled handsets and their capabilities as well as gaining information on the NFC ecosystem, NFC smart posters, NFC partner pods and a dedicated NFC support function;
  •  NFC Interactive Zones – More than a dozen NFC Interactive Zones will be located along the walkways, entrances and exhibition halls of Fira Gran Via. Comprising a series of linked smart posters, attendees can use their NFC-enabled handsets to access exhibitor directories, venue information, nearby conveniences and many other useful services offered during Mobile World Congress;
  • Barcelona City NFC Locations – Strategic NFC touch points will be available at the airport, key hotels, selected restaurants and central tourist locations and attendees can take a taxi and pay for goods in select shops with NFC; and
  • Virtual NFC Badge – During registration, attendees with NFC-enabled handsets (Android 4 and above or Windows Phone 8 operating system) can opt into the NFC Experience and get full show entry with it and their physical badge, but without the need to repeatedly present a physical photo ID to gain access to the venue.
An NFC-heavy Mobile World Congress will likely miff new iPhone 5 owners, especially after Apple famously called the technology “a solution to a problem that does not exist.”
Mobile World Congress will take place 25-28 February at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona.

Nokia Q4 Financial Results: More Info On Nokia Lumia Windows Phone Devices

Nokia Q4 Financial Results: More Info On Nokia Lumia Windows Phone Devices

Nokia today reported its Q4 financial results and as expected they posted about half a billion of profit. Nokia sold over 4.4 million Lumia smartphones in Smart Devices category. North America was one of the reason behind higher Lumia sales where in Q4 2012 the numbers grew over 40% over the same quarter last year.
Average Selling price of smart device also increased due to sales of  newly launched Lumia devices which had a higher ASP. The ASP of Lumia devices in the fourth quarter 2012 was EUR 192, compared to EUR160 in the third quarter 2012. The increase in Lumia ASPs was primarily due to a positive mix shift towards sales of newly launched Lumia devices which had a higher ASP.
Nokia also confirmed that during the Q4 2012 their Smart Devices volumes were affected by supply constraints as they ramped up their production capacity, particularly related to the Lumia 920, which have continued into the first quarter 2013.
Regarding quarterly platform support payment of USD 250 million from Microsoft,
Over the life of the agreement the total amount of the platform support payments is expected to slightly exceed the total amount of the minimum software royalty commitment payments. To date the amount of platform support payments received by Nokia has exceeded the amount of minimum royalty commitment payments to Microsoft. Thus for the remainder of the life of the agreement the total amount of the minimum software royalty commitment payments are expected to exceed the total amount of the platform support payments. In accordance with the terms of the agreement, the platform support payments and annual minimum software royalty commitment payments continue for a corresponding period of time.

Nokia Announces $585 Million Profit In Q4 Over $10.73 Billion Revenue

Nokia today announced its financial quarter results for Q4. Nokia returned to profit with $585 Million profit on $10.73 Billion revenue. Nokia sold over 4.4 Million Lumia Windows Phone devices which is up from Q3 number of 2.9 million units. Overall Smartphone shipments reduced from 35.1 million units to 6.6 million units as the transition from Symbian to Windows Phone continues at Nokia. On the good side, Nokia Siemens network is back to profitable side contributing a significant part to Nokia’s profit.
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on their results,
“We are very encouraged that our team’s execution against our business strategy has started to translate into financial results.
Most notably we are pleased that Nokia Group reached underlying operating profitability in the fourth quarter and for the full year 2012. We remain focused on moving through our transition, which includes continuing to improve our product competitiveness, accelerate the way we operate and manage our costs effectively.
All of these efforts are aimed at improving our financial performance and delivering more value to our shareholders.”

The “new + rising” section of the App Store – Do you love it or hate it?

The “new + rising” section of the App Store – Do you love it or hate it?

With Windows Phone 8, the “new” section of the App Store was renamed to “new + rising”. Along with the different name came a different algorithm for displaying “new” apps. Here’s how it seems like the algorithm works:
  • There is a time limit for what is considered “new”. The time limit seems to be one month from the current date, however Facebook Pro (awful app by the way, it simply opens the mobile website) was released on 12/18/2012 and Helpbridge was released on 12/7/2012. These are the exception, not the norm.
  • Downloads and ratings affect placement in the category. The order seems to be generated by a combination of user ratings (Speedtest.net is at the top with 4.5 stars for example), downloads, and how recently the apps were released (Facebook Pro isn’t found till further down in the list, despite it somehow having a 4 star rating from 6,000+ reviews).
  • The list doesn’t change very often. Speedtest.net has been at the top of the list for at least a few days now.
Depending on your point of view, the “new + rising” section could be a great improvement from the old system, or it could be awful. I personally love the “new + rising” section, but I’ll share both viewpoints here! Each side certainly has valid points.
I love the “new + rising” section, and here’s why!I only check the Store maybe once a week. With “new + rising” I see all the great new apps that have been released recently. They have plenty of user ratings (300 for Speedtest.net, 160 for Snex8x, etc) and are all *good* apps that I want to download! With the old system, all I would see was worthless apps that simply open a web page, and apps that had no ratings. I would often miss out on the release of the good apps like Speedtest.net since I didn’t visit the Store daily.
Now this is just a guess without any statistical backing, but I bet that many Windows Phone users fall into the “I only check the Store maybe once a week” category. The “new + rising” category clearly favors this type of user. Microsoft certainly has data relating to how often users open the Store… I would bet that they created the “new + rising” section because they saw people don’t open the Store often, and therefore were missing out on great apps. If you think like Microsoft, you realize that you want people to download as many apps as possible. Thus, they created the “new + rising” section that caters towards the majority who do not check the Store often. Providing a list of great apps released in the past week/month will get far more downloads than providing a list of mostly crappy apps released in the current day!
However, the existing stats about the iPhone App Store don’t support my conjecture. Astudy of 1,591 iPhone owners showed that users typically visit the App Store 6 times every week! Either Windows Phone users are different, or I’m completely wrong in my guess. But the study does bring up another point that supports the “new + rising” category: “85% of App Store visitors need to see a strong reviews, screenshots or price to be convinced”. The old “new” category had 0 to 1 reviews for most apps… which as the study showed means that people are less likely to download the apps. The “new + rising” category has TONS of reviews on the other hand.
I hate the “new + rising” section, and here’s why…

Trend Micro: 350,000 different pieces of malware targeting Android, could reach 1 million by end of 2013

Trend Micro: 350,000 different pieces of malware targeting Android, could reach 1 million by end of 2013

screen-shot-2013-01-23-at-10-29-06-620x329
The restrictions in Windows Phone 8 can be annoying to users, for example having to confirm to open a URL detected via NFC or not having full access to the file system.
It does however result in a much more secure system, unlike Android, where it seems viruses and other malware run wild.
Trend Micro has detected 350,000 threats for Android in 2012, with Android gathering more malware in 3 years than PCs in 14.
The number of Android malware detections spiked in the third quarter from 41,000 to 156,000 samples, with 40% premium number diallers, 38 percent being adware, 25 percent spyware, while 22 percent included a malicious downloader.
By the end of this year, the volume of Android malware could reach as high as the 1 million, around the same number as apps as there are in the Google Play store.
Now we are not suggesting all the apps in the Google Play are are actually premium number diallers and spyware, but given the limited scrutiny Google employs in the store they might as well be.
While Windows Phone users lack the large number of apps, they also have the benefit of being able to install applications without worrying that their phone will be screwed up, which is probably why Windows Phone has a higher customer satisfaction that Android.

Shuffle Party finally available for Windows Phone 8

Shuffle Party finally available for Windows Phone 8

Twitter
Shuffle Party was one very popular (and free!) high quality Xbox Live game for Windows Phone 7. Unfortunately it was – same as some other Xbox Games – not available for Windows Phone 8…
However, today the official Xbox twitter account tweeted that the game is finally ready for download in the Windows Phone store. I checked it and it is indeed downloadable.
Like I already mentioned, the game is free and high quality, means it has a nice gameplay and beautiful graphics (at least on 480×800 screen resolutions because it seems the game is unfortunately not optimized for HD resolutions). Grab Shuffle Party in the Windows Phone Store here.

GContact provide 3rd party CardDAV support on Windows Phone

GContact provide 3rd party CardDAV support on Windows Phone

Well, it seems the new Windows Phone API’s have come to Windows Phone 8 user’s rescue after all in Google’s battle with Microsoft.
Windows Phone 8 provides the option to have 3rd party contact databases which are still accessible via the Windows Phone Contacts app.
Rudy Huyn, the same developer as the excellent 9Gag app, has created GContacts, an app which will synchronize with your Gmail account and pull down your contacts for free.
The basic version will synchronize your contact’s full name, phone number, email address, and for an in-app purchase  of $1.29 will also sync their photo, postal address, birthday, website, company name and position, notes every 30 minutes.
After synchronization, you will find all your contacts in the native Contacts application.
If this app proves a success Rudy is also looking at supporting CalDAV for calendar sync.
Ultimately the best solution is really to get of Google’s crack, but if one is stuck there this seems a pretty good solution.
