Windows Phone grows 313% YoY in Russia

Windows Phone grows 313% YoY in Russia

russia
While Gartner and IDC’s results were encouraging, we find  Windows Phone’s performance in some individual countries is where the OS shines the most.
Such is the case in Russia, where Euroset released some numbers for the full year, which once again shows Windows Phone as the fastest growing operating system, growing 313% in terms of shipments, 274% in terms of revenue, and only suffered a 9% drop in average selling price – the lowest of all the operating systems, with even iOS ASP dropping 10% YoY.
os-rinok
In terms of absolute market share, Windows Phone now holds 5%, up from a mere 2% in 2011.
The smartphone market itself grew 69%, which Euroset in part attributes to Windows Phone, writing:
The positive growth of the smartphone market was achieved through devices based on Android and Windows Phone (include sales of smartphones based on Windows Mobile) “- says Euroset. Outpacing the growth of the smartphone market, Windows Phone sales grew by 313% ! In quantitative terms, it still makes up only 5% of the total number of units sold.
A wave of new cheaper Windows Phones will hopefully help sustain growth going into 2013, with the Huawei Ascend W1 hitting the market soon for less than 9000 rubles.

Nokia upgraded to Strong Buy by analyst

Nordea, a financial services company, has turned even more optimistic on Nokia, and have upgraded the company’s shares from Buy to Strong Buy.
He set a price target of 4 Euro for the stock, up from its current price of around 3 Euro.
The analyst believes the Nokia Lumia 820 and 510 will boost the company’s shipments, and expects Nokia to show off a number of products, including a flagship model for Verizon.
Nordea also expects Nokia to break even in the middle of 2013.

High Quality YouTube playback once again broken in Windows Phone apps

High Quality YouTube playback once again broken in Windows Phone apps

YouTube-brokenIt seems as regular as clockwork changes in YouTube’s API has once again resulted in Windows Phone developers and users scrambling to get their apps working again.
At present both MetroTube and SuperTube are unable to play high quality or HD quality video, leaving users with the SD-quality stream.
We wont go so far to say Google is maliciously sabotaging 3rd party YouTube apps, but I think if Google did make an app for Windows Phone users will not be stuck waiting every few months for fixes to 3rd party apps to arrive.
Are other YouTube client apps also broken? Let us know below.
Thanks LastBattle for the tip.

Interview with David Akinjise, product manager at Nokia Germany

Interview with David Akinjise, product manager at Nokia Germany

WP_20130206_055At the blogger meeting on Wednesday I not only have the opportunity to take a look at the Lumia 620, but I also had a talk with David Akinjise, product manager at Nokia Germany. I asked him some questions about Nokia and Nokia’s and Windows Phone’s future and of course I don’t want to withhold the answers from you.
David works for Nokia for about twelve years already. Of course he also uses a Nokia Lumia 920 personally and he uses it for emails, calendars, and everything else a smartphone is good for.
The interview was conducted in German. I translated everything, so what you will read is not what was said literally, but of course I tried not change the meaning of the words.
Q: How is morale in the company?
A: Much better. As you know transformations and changes are never easy. But with the current Lumia smartphones we have great products and get real positive feedback from the market. We still have a lot work to do, but the morale is good.
Q: How does Nokia cooperate with developers to push the Windows Phone eco system and the name “Lumia”? What can we expect?
A: Advertising is one thing, of course. Also events like the one today. We explain to the people what Lumia means, that it stands for design, location services and imaging. We are still in a phase where we need to explain to people what Lumia and Windows Phone means, but we can expect much. Especially things like imaging and location services will provide a unprecedented experience. Of course also a stronger integration in the whole operating system, like using a Windows Phone 8 with a Windows 8 PC. You can already see that with Windows Phone and Xbox, but we are still not finished with that.
Q: Will there be something exclusive in apps thanks to the cooperation?
A: Thanks to Nokia’s location services it is definitely possible. We provide the developers APIs others don’t and because of that developers can create an experience you can’t find on other platforms. Also Lumia does provide a great imaging experience with its PureView camera and camera features like lenses. I can imagine that 3rd party developers will use the lens API in the future.
Q: Why did Nokia expect the Lumia 920 sales to be so low that 4.4 million Lumia sales exceeded the expectations?
A: Generally I cannot comment on sales numbers. With Lumia, we are just starting. Of course it is great to see the positive response to our products and how popular it gets.
Q: What’s behind the poor availability of the Lumia 920? Are the supply issues now solved?
A: Like I already said, we are at the beginning. We are working hard to make sure, that everyone who wants to buy a Lumia 920, can do it.
Q: Are more Lumia 920 colors coming?
A: At this moment, we have the Lumia 920 in Germany in four powerful colors red, yellow, black and white. We will surely continue the colorful way, as you already see with the Lumia 620 and its changeable covers in fuchsia, cyan, matte-white, yellow, green and black.
Q: What can we expect for the Lumia 920’s successor?
A: I cannot comment on rumors or speculations on potentially upcoming products. What I can say is that Nokia wants to develop and the successor devices will have new innovations in the three main areas design, imaging and location services, so you can expect more to come, of course.
Q: Does the company see a role for QWERTY models?
A: Nokia concentrates on the consumers’ demand and QWERTY models are not being requested that much. It is no secret that touch only devices are actually the most wanted devices, and Nokia wants to focus on the customers’ desires.
Q: How cheap can Windows Phone go?
A: Generally Nokia wants to open up as much as possible, that means we also want to offer devices everyone can afford. With the Nokia Lumia 620 we think we have right now a very affordable and good device..
Q: Will there ever be luxury models?
A: The Lumia 920 already is a very luxury device with its high-quality polycarbonate and very tough display glass, and it already shows the direction future developments will take.
Q: Will the 808 PureView type sensor ever come to Windows Phone?
A: I cannot comment on that. Sorry.
Q: Are there any features in Windows Phone 8 Nokia can take credit for?
A: Location services are a very good example. Bing Maps uses Nokia’s here maps data which can be downloaded to the phone for offline usage. Also the cooperation does last for about two years now and of course that is not everything and there will definitely come more.
Q: Which kind of other devices does Nokia plan to release to push the name “Lumia” and the Windows Phone eco system?
A: I cannot comment on rumors or speculations on potentially upcoming products. But as said earlier we will continue to innovate in the three main areas design, imaging and location services.
Q: What is Nokia planning with Microsoft for the future?
A: I am not involved into every little detail, so I don’t know everything myself, but what we already offered will definitely be developed and for example in location services will come more.
Q: How long will Windows Phone 7 Lumia support last? What kind of features can we expect?
A: We have just started the update for Windows Phone 7.8 in the last weeks, a fact that was very much appreciated by our users. They have now features like live tiles in 3 different sizes or Nokia signature apps like Nokia Cinemagramm.
Q: Why is the portico update rolling out so slowly?
A: There is not that one day when everyone is getting the update. This also has got to do with the servers and the infrastructure. Let me say it that way: It is way better when everyone gets the update without any problems than everyone gets the update on the same day with many problems.
Q: Which kind of campaign does Nokia plan to use to advertise the Lumia 920 (globally)?
A: There is advertising of course, guess you have already seen them on TV, cinema or in magazines. One thing is to promote “Lumia”, another to inform for example how Nokia Lumia does in comparison to other devices and what its advantages are. But there´s a lot more we do, e.g. having training measures for developers to show them the Windows Phone ecosystem and how to develop for it. And of course we are very visible online and on our Social Media channels like Facebook and Twitter.
Q: What can we expect for future Windows Phone releases/updates?
A: Nokia and Microsoft do listen to costumers and if something is requested very badly then we try to convert it. Good examples are the Nokia signature apps like Nokia camera lenses or location based services which are continuously updated.

Solar-charging phone screens may be coming to a Nokia handset this autumn

Solar-charging phone screens may be coming to a Nokia handset this autumn

technologie-wysips_rmicaq
MonWindowsPhone reports that Nokia is one of the first partners of WYSIPS, a company who is developing solar charging surfaces which can be integrated into the screen of a phone and extend battery life up to 20%.
The technology works by placing a membrane composed of semi-cylindrical lenses between the screen itself and the device. Phones can be charged by natural light, but also artificial light as found in offices.
WYSIPS has said the first phones using the technology could hit the market as early as Autumn, and has not confirmed who their manufacturing partner is, though it is known that Nokia has been one of the first to sign up.

Nokia not seeing much demand for QWERTY smartphones: Updated with statement from Nokia

Nokia not seeing much demand for QWERTY smartphones: Updated with statement from Nokia

large_image_1
Not coming to Windows Phone any time soon…
We had a recent interview with David Akinjise, product manager at Nokia Germany, which we will be publishing in full tomorrow.
One particular element I found interesting however was that Nokia was not planning to diversify their line to a QWERTY model, presumably either in portrait or landscape mode.
We asked “Does the company see a role for QWERTY models?”
… and received the following answer:
A: Nokia concentrates on the consumers’ demand and QWERTY models are not being requested that much. It is no secret that touch only devices are actually the most wanted devices, and Nokia wants to focus on the customers’ desires.
Do our readers agree that the age of the hardware keyboard is over, or do you still crave for Windows Phone Nokia E7? Let us know below.
Update: Nokia wished to comment on the article and has had this to say:
After presenting the Lumia 620, David, our Product Manager fielded many questions regarding the current Lumia portfolio, covering items such as colors, innovation in future products, as well as potential pricing from low end to luxury. When prompted on QWERTY keyboards, David responded that we see most demand for full touch smartphones.
It should be of note that Nokia vetted the original quote prior to publication, and I don’t think their statement adds anything new.  Do our readers agree? Let us know below.

Analyst: Microsoft Has Delayed Its Own Smartphone Plans

microsoft_surface_phone_8_by_yronimus-d54trfa.jpg
Few months back there were couple of rumors that Microsoft is planning to release its own smartphone hardware in 2013. Now, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek has revealed that Microsoft is pushing back their plans for releasing smartphones.
“Our checks indicate that Amazon’s phone seems to have been delayed. Also the launch of the Surface phone from Microsoft has been pushed out.”
Earlier we saw reports like Microsoft securing China’s Suning for Surface Phone distribution, Microsoft-branded Windows Phone 8 handset to be produced by Foxconn, Microsoft testing Surface Phone with Asian suppliers, Huawei and MediaTek among them and more. The current report that Microsoft is pushing back their plans is in line with theirCFO’s comments at Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference that Microsoft is more focused on the current plan of bringing right set of experiences at the right price points.

2. Create more memorable mailbox names
3. Can you read me now? (Ease of Access)
4. Switch up your lock screen icons

Microsoft CFO On Current Mobile Strategy: “Bringing Right Set Of Experiences At The Right Price Points”

Microsoft CFO On Current Mobile Strategy: “Bringing Right Set Of Experiences At The Right Price Points”

Microsoft CFP Peter KlienYesterday we reported about Microsoft CFO commenting on smaller form factors like 7-inch Windows devices at the the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference. At the same conference, he was asked about Microsoft’s mobile strategy. He said that “We’re very focused on continuing the success we have with PCs and taking that to tablets and phones,”.
When asked about whether Microsoft has any alternate plans to see its success in mobile phone, he replied that Microsoft is more focused on the current plan of bringing right set of experiences at the right price points.
“It’s less ‘Plan B’ than how you execute on the current plan,” said Klein. “We aim to evolve this generation of Windows to make sure we have the right set of experiences at the right price points for all customers.”
“It’s probably more nuanced than just you lower prices or raise prices,” said Klein. “It’s less a Plan B and more, how do you tweak your plan, how do you bring these things to market to make sure you have the right offerings at the right price points?”
I think Microsoft’s current strategy is going as per the plan with Windows Phone 8 devices are coming to market that ranges from Nokia Lumia 620 ($250) to Nokia Lumia 920 ($650) which will cater the huge mobile market. What do you think about Microsoft’s strategy?
