5 Great Translation Apps for a Worldly Adventure

If you venture into an exotic pocket of your hometown — perhaps to Chinatown for authentic dim sum — it’s likely that a bilingual patron or employee can help with translations. But if your work takes you to China, things could be quite different. Not being able to ask for directions or haggle with a supplier might spell the difference between a successful trip and a bust. But the solution to this problem is already in your pocket.
A panoply of translation apps for smartphones and tablets have grown savvy enough to break down communication barriers in almost every corner of the world. If you select the right one for you, it may be able to process translations in the cloud, handle vast language databases and even let you point your camera at unfamiliar signs on the street to help you get your bearings. We tested five of the most popular translation apps to see which ones live up to the hype.

Though purchasing language packs can become pricey, Word Lens is still the best augmented reality translation app for your smartphone. The 24 languages' translations are spoken back in surprisingly natural voice, making your travels much smoother.

Windows Phone UI gets ripped off by Dual-SIM phone in India

Readers who were around in the Windows Mobile days will know there were quite a few “fake” windows mobile phones produced in China which simulated a Windows Mobile UI, but were in fact dumb phones.
Now it seems Windows Phone has become popular enough to also get the rip-off treatment, with the Lemon T109 Dual-SIM phone being offered for only 2999 Rupees.
The device offers features not even found on Windows Phone, such as an automatic phone call recorder and the King Movie Player, not to mention dual SIM support and a high resolution HVGA screen.
In many ways Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, so hopefully we will see many more of these devices pop up.

Samsung ATIV S WP8 Device Delayed Till 2013?

We already know that Samsung Ativ S Windows Phone 8 device got delayed several times since its announcement. Now, according to the information SamMobile received, Samsung will ship the ATIV S from week 52 which means there is further delay in ATIV S shipment.
The ATIV S uses the same display as the Galaxy S III. Because the Galaxy S III is extremely hot at the moment. Samsung could have decided to move back the ATIV S for public release because of production switch in build and materials.
If you already pre-ordered ATIV S, you may have to wait longer. You can expect the device only in January 2013 in Europe. Following Ativ S delay, I highly doubt Samsung will deliver their Odyssey WP8 device for Verizon which is expected next month. What do you think?

Microsoft Working On Bringing Windows Phone 7.8 In Early 2013

Microsoft today announced in a blog post that they will release Windows Phone 7.8 in early 2013. Microsoft is working closely with their hardware and carrier partners to get it tested, approved, and rolled out to as many devices as possible. Also Microsoft is making sure to deliver a high-quality release and ensure a smooth transition for their widely expanded services.
Along with the new Start Screen in Windows Phone 7.8, Microsoft mentioned that number of theme and accent colors are doubled to 20. There are also new lock screen features such as the option to automatically display the Bing Picture of the Day plus the ‘A1B2C3’ PIN/password challenge to prevent accidental device wipes on phones connected to Exchange accounts.
Microsoft also said that new devices running Windows Phone 7.8 will be released in many countries around the world focusing on lower price points to reach more customers.

Ballmer: Several Windows 8 apps have had one million downloads

Microsoft is holding its annual stockholder meeting in Redmond, Washington today and as part of the event, the company's CEO Steve Ballmer gave the owners of Microsoft's shares a quick overview of the company's current and near future plans. Naturally, part of his address talked about the launch of Windows 8.

The day before, Microsoft announced that it had sold sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since its launch just over a month ago, and that Windows 8 upgrades were outpacing those of Windows 7. Ballmer repeated those statements during his address but threw in a couple of extra bits of information. He stated that Windows 8 owners " ... are using the features and downloading new applications. In fact, several apps have reached already 1 million downloads." He did not state which Windows 8 apps had achieved this milestone.

In addition, Ballmer gave an update on the number of new PCs that have been qualified to run Windows 8. He said, "I'm pleased to announce that the number of certified Windows 8 PCs has grown from 1,000 to 1,500. Those new devices will really start to hit the shelves worldwide in the coming weeks and coming months."

Will.i.am Unveils “i.am+ foto.shosho” Camera Accessory for iPhone

When is an iPhone not an iPhone? When it’s transformed into a 14-megapixel “genius-phone” capable of taking better photos than Apple’s stock shooter can provide. Musician Will.i.am launched his new i.am+ foto.sosho accessory for the iPhone in London today, which he says can “turn your iPhone into a fashionable camera.”
There are actually four separate versions of the iam+ foto.sosho available, each sporting a completely different look, differing capabilities and price tags starting at £199, which is roughly $320 USD by today’s exchange rate. (The “V.4″ model shown above costs £299.)
Your iPhone slips into the accessory, which sports its own slide-out physical keyboard, Britain’s Daily Telegraph reports. The i.am+ foto.sosho also comes with four interchangeable lenses: standard, fish-eye, wide, and a zoom lens. The dock brings custom software to the table, including Instagram-esque filters, photo editing capabilities, and the ability to share photos online, presumably to Will.i.am’s new i.am website.

Ballmer: Windows Phones Are So Far Selling At 4 Times The Rate Of Last Year

At Microsoft shareholder meeting today, CEO Steve Ballmer said that Windows Phones are so far selling at four times the rate of the same time last year. Of course it doesn’t let us know the actual device sales numbers, but we can have a rough estimate. If we consider 1-2 million Windows Phone devices were selling last year, according to Ballmer’s numbers we can expect 4-8 million Windows Phone device sales from this quarter.
A recent report from Yahoo China claimed that Nokia received an order for 2.5 million Nokia Lumia 920 device around the world. If the report was true, combining Windows Phone 7.x device sales and Windows Phone 8 device sales would be equal to somewhere around 4-8 million as Steve Ballmer said today. What do you think about the Windows Phone sales numbers?

Orange France also confirms high demand for the Nokia Lumia 920, handset sold out

As has become increasingly common, the Nokia Lumia 920 is sold out on Orange France. MonWindowsPhone asked for a statement from the company to establish if this was simply due to poor supply or also good sales.
They spoke to the press office there and reports they said “Orange then informed us of high demand for the Lumia 920, thus confirming the success of the new spearhead of Nokia France.”
The handset has also been the top-selling phone on PhoneHouse.fr’s Top 50 devices, which we hope will be translated into good sales numbers eventually.

Demand for Google’s Nexus 4 Rises: 4-6 Week Wait For Delivery

Yesterday the Google Play Store put the Nexus 4 back up for sale, but shortly thereafter the length of delivery time required for the smartphone began to increase exponentially. The Nexus 4 may be available for order, but you’ll have to wait a few weeks to get your hands on the device.

As soon as the Nexus 4 was back in the Play Store, the wait time lengthened. It started at 1-2 weeks and grew quickly from there. Currently the wait for the 16 GB Nexus 4 is 4-5 weeks. Those who want to purchase the 8 GB version have a even longer delay, with delivery dates estimated in 8-9 weeks. In all likelihood, customers won’t be seeing their new Nexus 4 anytime this year!
Due to the incredibly high demand for the Nexus 4, Google decided to keep the ordering option open and reminded customers that they would need to take extended delivery time into consideration. It’s a testament to Google that the Nexus 4 is selling so rapidly and it signals an upswing for the search engine-turned-tech-giant.
Just don’t get too impatient or upset if your Nexus 4 arrives after the New Year or, worst case scenario, by Easter.

ASUS Taichi Dual-Screen Windows 8 Ultrabook Delayed – ‘Til When? Nobody Knows

ASUS expected to release the Taichi dual screen ultrabook with the rest of Windows 8 on October 26th, but its release has been delayed time and time again. In the US, the Taichi is not expected to be available until December at the earliest. Whether or not ASUS manages to get it together by then remains unknown.

After the Taichi missed the October date, a spokesperson for ASUS stated that the company intended to release the dual screen ultrabook in November. It’s now the end of November and the device has not materialized. Amazon and Newegg have stopped selling the Taichi altogether and The 11.6 inch and 13 inch models are no longer available anywhere for pre-order.
ASUS is unclear about when it will finally be up for sale. One spokesperson mentioned that ASUS hoped for a December sale date, but warned that it could be later than that. ASUS has been very uncommunicative regarding the reasons behind the delay. Regardless of what spokespeople have said, it’s clear that we’re in for a long wait.

Could Intel kill off the removable CPU?

At some point, a self-confessed computer geek will have built a computer for themselves, or a friend. They’ll have invested much time and love selecting the right components including motherboard, CPU and memory, to fit their computing and budgetary needs.

But if Intel’s rumoured shift to a ball grid array (BGA), where the CPU is soldered directly to the motherboard, turns out to be fact, it will take some of the magic and mysticism out of building a computer. Not to mention alienating the enthusiast market, where CPU choice is a key factor in spending a premium on a CPU that can be pushed to the limit through overclocking and voltage mods.

Broadwell is the codename of the 14nm product that Intel is developing as the successor to the 22nm Haswell (which replaces the current 22nm Ivy Bridge tech). It’s these Broadwell chips that are rumoured to be soldered directly to the board, with southbridge functionality integrated into the chip. This will essentially turn the Broadwell chips into a System on Chip (SOC) solution.

The Core i7 using the LGA socket solution

Power and cost savings are being touted as possible reasons for the shift in direction. The Broadwell chips top out at 57 watts and Intel will still maintain profits while pushing the cost of the SOC onto the motherboard manufacturers. They have done this already by introducing the LGA socket with socket 775 CPU’s. It also means motherboard manufacturers may have to limit their catalogue of motherboards and will need to eat up the support costs if there is a problem with the CPU.

Intel and AMD both offer BGA solutions already with their Atom and E series chips, but these are generally seen as budget friendly solutions, where people are happy to sacrifice performance to keep a few bucks in their pockets.

The good news; Intel is not giving up on LGA just yet. With Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge both co-existing, Intel envisage Haswell and Broadwell sitting alongside each other, with Haswell being the preferred choice for enthusiast due to probably performance gains and swappable CPU. The product that will follow Broadwell is tipped to be offered in both BGA and LGA solutions as well.

But rest assured, Intel will be watching how Broadwell performs – from both cost and power perspectives. If they feel that it’s better for their profits to dump the LGA socket in favour of BGA, they will. And it’s this attitude that could benefit the struggling AMD, as they are prepared to offer swappable CPUs as long as people are buying them.

What!?! Walmart selling the Red Samsung Galaxy S III 920 smartphone

We know Samsung is really fast at copying successful phones, but this must be a new record! A new phone, recommended by Walmart, has shown up in their online store.
The Samsung Galaxy S III 920 smartphone looks A LOT like the Nokia Lumia 920, which is of course a Samsung trademark, up to including the user interface, but of course runs Android 4.0 with a 4.8 inch SuperAMOLED screen.
Kidding aside, it is of course some kind of mistake in Walmart’s database (possibly even a prank), but it is rather amusing to see one as big slip past such a big store’s security and procedures.

Otterbox now available for the Nokia Lumia 920, but do you really need one?

Otterbox has made their rugged cases available for the Nokia Lumia 920.

The cases come in two models, the Commuter Series and the Defender Series.

The Commuter Series is a two layer silicon+polycarbonate  case for moderate protection that adds protection without bulk. The case sells for $34.95.

The Defender Series is a polycarbonate case with a built-in screen membrane with an outer silicone layer which provides heavy duty protection. The case comes with a holster that accommodate the device in any direction and costs $49.95.

Of course with the rather tough, torture tested device like the Nokia Lumia 920, with a polycarbonate shell with will not show small scratches and nicks, not to mention super-tough gorilla glass screen, one have to wonder if there is any point in making the device any bigger and bulkier.

Nokia Lumia 920 And Nokia Lumia 820 Announced In Netherlands, Device Availability From Jan 2013

Nokia has announced Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 device in Netherlands. Both these devices will be available only from the beginning of January 2013. Nokia Lumia 920 will cost €599 including wireless charging plate, and Nokia Lumia 820 will cost €499 with a wireless charging cover (charger to be bought separately).
Nokia Netherlands spokesman of Stella Jansen explains that the late launch of new Windows Phone 8 devices in Netherlands is because of planned ‘phased rollout’ for their new handsets.

1000 Euro reward being offered for finding Space-launched Nokia Lumia 920

It turns out Verkkokauppa.com sent up more than one Nokia Lumia 920 in their weather balloons.

While the first came down to the ground already, the second, encased in a special box,has gone on a bit of a longer journey.

Part of a contest, Verkkokauppa is offering 1000 Euro to whomever finds the phone.

The device was last spotted South Karelia in Finland at co-ordinates:

Latitude: 61.324573

Longitude: 27.734175

The location seems to be water, but the box was designed to float, so is likely still bobbing around in the sea.

To claim your 1000 Euro call the number written on the box or take a picture of the box and send it to kisa@verkkokauppa.com.

Microsoft: 40 million Windows 8 licenses sold so far

Microsoft launched Windows 8 with much fanfare on October 26th and four days later, its CEO Steve Ballmer announced that the company had already sold over 4 million Windows 8 upgrades. Today, Microsoft gave a new update on Windows 8, 32 days after its official release to the public.

The official Windows blog reports that Windows business head Tami Reller stated that Microsoft has now sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since the launch. Reller made her remarks during an address at the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference.

In addition, Microsoft claims, "Windows 8 is outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades." The post did not give any specific numbers for comparison. We emailed Microsoft to find out how many of those 40 million Windows 8 licenses were for updates for older PCs and how many were for new PC purchases but a company representative did not provide that kind of breakdown to us.

PocketCloud Hits the iPad, Windows RT, the Web, and Dell PCs

Dell Wyse’s PocketCloud Explore apps have proven to be a helpful tool for accessing files stored on your PC when you’re out and about with a mobile device. Installing PocketCloud Companion program on your PC transforms your computer into a quasi-server, the contents of which you can peruse, search and download via the PocketCloud Explore mobile app’s file explorer-esque interface.

Today, Dell announced support for several new platforms that makes PocketCloud Explore even more flexible and compelling than before. Every single Dell Inspiron and Dell XPS sold after November 15th has already started shipping with the PocketCloud Companion PC client preinstalled. Even better, you’ll be able to connect to those computers (or any PC with PocketCloud Companion installed) from most major mobile platforms, as Dell also announced availability of PocketCloud Explore apps for the iPad and Windows 8/RT.

The new apps join the iOS and Android apps that have been available for a while now. The free version of PocketCloud Explore lets you connect to a single remote PC to transfer files up to 25MB in size, and audio/video streaming in 30 second bursts. Paying for a $5 per month premium subscription in-app ups those limits to 10 remote computers, 100MB files, and unlimited media streaming. Dell Wyse also offers a PocketExplore Remote Desktop app, which functions like any typical remote desktop app.

Today, Dell unveiled a third remote file management option with PocketCloud Web, a new service that allows you to browse the files stored on your PCs via any Web browser, making them accessible even when you’re far away from your PocketCloud Explore-equipped mobile device. You can sign up for PocketCloud Web over on the PocketCloud website.

We were deeply impressed with PocketCloud Explore when we went hands-on with the service at the Mobile World Conference this year, and the expanded functionality should only improve PocketCloud even more.

iPhone 5 and Kim Kardashian top Bing's 2012 search lists

Yes, we know that 2012 is still over a month away from being over, but that's not stopping Microsoft from releasing its annual list of the news stories, people and products that were searched for the most on its Bing search engine. Microsoft released its 2011 list about this same time last year.

In today's press release, Microsoft said reality show star Kim Kardashian was back on top as the most searched person on Bing this year. Kardashian was number one on Bing in 2010 but lost the top spot in 2011 to pop singer Justin Bieber, who went down to number two on Bing's people search list this year.

For 2012, the iPhone 5 topped the search list in the news category on Bing, followed by the 2012 elections and the 2012 Olympics. Hurricane Sandy coverage and reality show "star" Honey Boo Boo rounded out the top five most searched news items.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was the most searched athlete on Bing in 2012 and Justin Bieber was, not surprisingly, the most search music artist this year. "Beyoncé’s baby" was the most searched celebrity item on Bing in 2012 and American Idol was the most searched TV show on Bing in the past. More search categories and details for 2012 can be checked out at the official Bing blog.
