2012 Volvo owners gets Windows Phone telematics app

2012 Volvo owners gets Windows Phone telematics app

Its nice to get official apps directly from companies, and the latest is directed at Volvo owners with recent model cars who also use Windows Phones
Starting from model year 2012, Volvo has released an app with the ability to access your vehicle from your Windows Phone. This requires that your car is equipped with a Volvo On Call Telematics unit.
If your car conforms with these requirements you will, depending on your model be able to:
  • See vehicle dashboard values, such as fuel level, trip meters, and more, in the App.
  • Control your fuel fired parking heater, if the vehicle is equipped with a fuel fired parking heater.
  • Locate your vehicle on a map or using the vehicle signal horn and turn indicators.
  • See the current status of doors, windows and locks for your vehicle.
  • Lock and unlock the vehicle.
  • Request road side assistance from the App.
  • Have an electronic driving journal, that will create trip reports for every trip made with the vehicle.
The Volvo V60 PLUG-IN HYBRID is unfortunately not supported by the app.
Even if you do not currently own a Volvo that fits the bill you can still install the App and use it in demonstration mode, in-order to see some of the functionality offered by the Volvo On Call Telematics system.
Find the free app in the Windows Phone Store here.

WordPress for Windows Phone updated to version 1.81, promises major updates for version 1.9

WordPress for Windows Phone updated to version 1.81, promises major updates for version 1.9

WordPress for Windows Phone has just seen a minor update to version 1.8.1. Its quite rare to get changelogs these days with updates, but fortunately the WP for WP team posted full details on their blog.
The update fixes some important bugs and minor crashes with all 10 crash/bug reports resolved. The update fixes:
  • Fixed crash when the translation files had an empty string in it.
  • Fixed crash when the media library contained a corrupted image on Edit Post Page.
  • Minor layout issue on HTC 8X.
  • Other bugfixes.
The team also promised some significant improvements for the next major release, version 1.9.
On the roadmap is the ability to specify Featured Image, improvements on the Editor Page, as well as a few more nifty improvements.
The team are taking requests on their blog, and on the top of my wish list would be some kind of WYSIWYG editor, which is surely not the most complicated thing in the world.
Let the team know your request on their page here and find WordPress for Windows Phone here.

Windows Phone hits 4% installed base in Italy

Windows Phone hits 4% installed base in Italy

image
According to Statcounter Windows Phone has just crossed over into the 4% installed mark in Italy, one of Windows Phone’s most popular markets, where according to Kantar for the last few months consistently more than 10% of phones sold were Windows Phones.
As can be seen from the graph, growth really took off in July this year, and has been pretty steady since then, seemingly replacing Symbian handsets.  Comscore data (via WindowsPhoneItaly) provide some insight into this, showing Nokia is still a major force in the market, with 35% market share, ahead of Samsung 28.3%, and the brand is obviously helping the OS there.
The boost is however part of a consistent lift which has seen Windows Phone hit 2% of the installed base in UK, 2.2% in France, 3.21% in Mexico and 2.07% in Switzerland.
Are our Italian readers seeing Windows Phones out and about? Let us know below.

RIM settles patent infringement case with Nokia, to pay regular royalties

RIM settles patent infringement case with Nokia, to pay regular royalties

Nokia has emerged victorious once again from a patent case with another company.
Like Apple RIM has agreed to make a one-time payment to Nokia and then pay regular royalties.
“We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement, while maintaining Nokia’s ability to protect our unique product differentiation,” said Paul Melin, chief intellectual property officer at Nokia. “This agreement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”
The amounts involved has been revealed yet, but Nokia managed to secure a patent settlement of $608 million and ongoing royalties from Apple last year, which may give an indication of the windfall Nokia can expect.

WindowsPhoneMania.pl has managed to get their hands on some disassembly pictures and schematics  for the Nokia Lumia 620.

As one can imagine it does not reveal anything too dramatic for the lowest-end Windows Phone 8 handset, but one interesting feature is the presence of dual Microphones,  at points 1 and 10 in the above schematic, presumably from their position for noise cancelation purposes. This is interesting given that Apple is currently running a campaign for the noise cancellation microphone on the iPhone 5 (and presumably trying to convince people they invented it), touting a feature present in what will be one of the cheapest Windows Phones.

GetThemAll Downloads Any File Or Media Stream On Windows Phone

GetThemAll Downloads Any File Or Media Stream On Windows Phone

FVD Media has released a new mobile download manager called GetThemAll. Designed for Mango and WP8, GetThemAll allows you to grab HD video, audio, images and other content from any webpage.
Here’s how it works. You can either use the GetThemAll’s built-in browser to find content but if you already have a URL, you simply paste it into the address bar and let the app extract content. GetThemAll parses that webpage and presents you with a listing of all downloadable media files. You can download all the content on the webpage, or use filters to select files of a particular media type only (for example, video).

The application can download more than one file at a time. You can see the download progress for each file in the built-in download manager, pause or resume a download, restore interrupted downloads.
The GetThemAll App is available for free from the Windows Phone Store. Supported operating systems are Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.

Any issues after the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 update?

Any issues after the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8 update?

The HTC 8X Windows Phone update was delayed briefly due to an unspecified issue.  Now Shane has tweeted us noting a new complaints with his Nokia Lumia 920, saying the screen brightness seems to be set to High even when the phone was set to Medium.
Have any of our reader lucky enough to have received the update noticed this issue or any other? Let us know below.

Samsung confirms all Windows Phone 7.5 handsets will get Windows Phone 7.8

Samsung confirms all Windows Phone 7.5 handsets will get Windows Phone 7.8

In September Esphoneblog.com posted a chart which listed Samsung’s upcoming software updates.
Contrary to the promise of an eventual Windows Phone 7.8 update to all Windows Phone 7.5 handsets the chart notes the Samsung Omnia W will not go beyond 7.10.8107.7.
Now Windows Phone Italy has been able to confirm with Samsung’s technical department that this was definitely not the case, with Samsung saying:
We can confirm that our products carrying the Windows Phone version 7.5 , are updated the [version] 7.8 but will be made ??available with terms decided by Microsoft.
While this is not the Windows Phone 8 update we were all once hoping for, I suspect it is a lot more than Samsung Android phone owners were ever able to get from the company.

RSA SecurID app now in the Windows Phone Store

RSA SecurID app now in the Windows Phone Store

imageThe RSA SecurID authentication mechanism consists of a token — either a dongle or software — which is assigned to a computer user and which generates an authentication code at fixed intervals (usually 60 seconds) using a built-in clock and the card’s factory-encoded random key (known as the "seed").
The hardware is often used in enterprise settings for secure two factor access to company resources.
Those enterprise users who also use Windows Phones now have cause to rejoice, as their phone may soon be able to replace their keychain dongle.
The RSA SecurID® authenticator app for Windows Phone has now arrived. This app, when provided with a software token, generates one-time passwords for accessing network resources.  After downloading and installing the app on your mobile device, you need to  contact your IT administrator for instructions on how to get your unique RSA SecurID Software Token Record. The application will not generate one-time passwords without completing this step.

2013 Toyota Avalon–the most expensive Nokia Lumia 920 accessory yet

2013 Toyota Avalon–the most expensive Nokia Lumia 920 accessory yet

toyota-avalon-limited-wireless-charging
The Nokia Lumia 920 fatboy pillow and JBL Power-up speaker are pretty expensive, but they hold no candle to the 2013 Toyota Avalon, which like those accessories come with aQi-compatible wireless charger built-in.
While the promotional picture predictable shows an iPhone (which of course does not have wireless charging) the press release for the $42,195 car (after the break) clearly states “Qi wireless charging is now integrated in 34 mobile phone models, including recent launches of the LG Google Nexus 4, Nokia Lumia 920, HTC Windows Phone 8X.”
Now they just need to offer the house with wireless charging built into all the furniture to complete the collection.
See the full press release after the break.

TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 19, 2012 – The 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited will be the first vehicle available in the world that offers in-console Qi wireless charging for Qi–enabled mobile phones and devices as part of a Technology Package, available for both the gasoline and hybrid version of the new Avalon Limited, which also includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High beams and a Pre-Collision System.
Qi is the global standard for wireless power and charging. With Qi, devices can be charged just by placing them on, or near, any Qi-enabled surface. Any Qi-enabled device works with any Qi charger, regardless of brand or manufacturer.
The Avalon’s wireless charging pad is integrated into the ebin® lid situated in vehicle’s center console. The system can be enabled by a switch beneath the lid, and charging is as simple as placing the phone upon the lid’s high-friction surface.
Supplied by DENSO, the Avalon’s wireless charging system relies on technology developed by ConvenientPower and Philips Lite-on Digital Solution (PLDS), and it will elevate the high technology experience of the new Avalon sedan.
“Pioneering the ability to charge with no wires or connectors by simply putting devices in the car console is an intuitive innovation which reflects Toyota’s continuing commitment to improve the consumer experience,” said Randy Stephens, chief engineer of Toyota Avalon. “We see wireless charging as an important feature that helps enhance the high-technology theme and consumer interface offered by Avalon Limited which is already equipped with three TFT color screens and Intellitouch™ controls.”
Qi wireless charging is now integrated in 34 mobile phone models, including recent launches of the LG Google Nexus 4, Nokia Lumia 920, HTC Windows Phone 8X. Qi-certified products range from smartphones to charging pads, gaming controllers, Blu-ray Disc recorders, smartphone docking speakers, automobile phone chargers, alarm clocks and battery packs, to charging modules that can be installed in tabletops and furniture.
The new dramatically-styled 2013 Avalon arrived in showrooms the beginning of December. This new Toyota flagship sedan features improved dynamics, an athletic exterior design, and a modern yet elegant interior that surrounds occupants with premium materials and a high level of craftsmanship. This latest Avalon is also the first available with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive that offers a combined EPA-rating of 40 mpg.

Nokia Said to be Prepping a 10-inch Windows RT Tablet for February

Nokia may not have tossed its complete lot in with Windows Phone, after all. The Finnish company is reportedly in talks with Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Compal Electronics to develop a 10-inch Windows RT tablet, which could be unveiled as early as next February at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona.
Nokia originally wanted to start development on a dual-core tablet early in 2012, DigiTimes‘ as-always-anonymous supply chain sources claim, but Microsoft’s decision to release the Surface tablet cooled Nokia’s rush to market. Instead, the company decided to focus on its Lumia smartphones.

CloudOn Version 3.0 Brings Free Microsoft Office

CloudOn Version 3.0 Brings Free Microsoft Office

CloudOn, the popular productivity app that lets users access their DropBox, Box and Google Drive accounts simultaneously, released its Version 3.0 today, optimized for iPhone, iPad mini and Nexus 7 tablets. This launch brings Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) to those devices for free, as well as Microsoft SkyDrive cloud storage integration, in case the other three cloud storage options weren’t enough for you.

Users can access CloudOn from all Android tablets running Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich 3.1 or higher, as well as iPhone, iPad and iPad mini. In addition to being able to launch new Excel, PowerPoint and Word files and draft presentations, proposals and the like, users can also access Recent Files, so if they were working on something at the office and want to continue it on the train home from their smartphone or tablet, no problem. Plus, users can get real-time updates on documents with FileSpace, which lets you add notes and view all activity on one file without having to actually open the file.

Seidio Shatterproofs Your iPhone 5 or Galaxy S III

The Gorilla Glass protecting the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5 may stand up admirably to everyday use and in-pocket key scratches, but it’s still susceptible to cracking if something lands on the phone’s screen—or if you drop your device on the ground. If you’re prone to butter fingers rather than sure hands, you might want to check out Seidio’s new Vitreo screen protector for those very phones, which claim to offer “unbeatable, shatterproof protection.”

The secret sauce lies in the Vitreo’s tempered glass design, which is rated for sturdy 9H hardness. That makes them more similar to an actual Gorilla Glass sheet than the flimsy plastic protectors that are so common today. The Vitreo protectors still stick to the surface of phones with a silicon adhesive, eliminating gaps between the protector and the phone’s actual display while adding just 0.55mm (or 0.02-inch) of thickness to the phone’s profile.

Seidio offers Vitreo screen protectors for the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III for $39.95 a pop, while a Vitreo protector for the second- through fourth-generation iPad will set you back $69.95. That’s a whole lot more than a standard plastic screen protector, but a whole lot less than the cost of replacing a shattered screen.

It’ll be interesting to see how Seidio’s shatterproof claims hold up in the wild—Gorilla Glass is also said to have a 9H hardness rating and it doesn’t exactly take a direct blow like a champ—especially if you drop a phone on its corner edge. Of course, if your screen protector cracks from a withering blow but your phone’s display remains intact, that’s a win in our book.

Nokia Lumia 510 now available in Russia from MTS

Nokia Lumia 510 now available in Russia from MTS

lumia510_mts_price
WP7Forum.ru reports that the Nokia Lumia 510, Nokia’s new low-end Windows Phone 7.5 phone, has now become available in Russia.
Available from the online store of MTS, the handset is retailing for 8490 rubles (around $275), which is significantly more expensive than the Rs 9999 or 5800 rubles ($188) Nokia was charging in India where the device first appeared, but it may just be that Nokia is charging what the local market can bear.
The device is available in White and Black and features:
  • Windows Phone 7.5
  • Processor – 800 MHz
  • WVGA, 800 x 480, 4 `TFT capacitive touchscreen display
  • RAM – 256 MB
  • ROM – 4 GB
  • 5-megapixel rear camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • FM-radio
  • Battery – 1300 mAh
  • Weight – 129 grams
The device is part of Nokia pursuing what has been a very successful low-end strategy which will hopefully see Windows Phones hitting the same low-end market as Nokia previously very successfully addressed with their Symbian handsets.
See some more pictures after the break.

Microsoft Details Windows Phone 8 Update (8.0.10211)

Microsoft Details Windows Phone 8 Update (8.0.10211)

As Nokia started rolling out the PR1.1 update for Nokia Lumia 920 devices in US and Canada, Microsoft today updated its Windows Phone update history page with details on the new update.
Update 8.0.10211.204:
Messaging improvements. A great messaging experience is now even better. You can now add multiple recipients at the same time when you send a text message and automatically save unsent text messages as drafts. You can even edit received text messages before you forward them.
Text replies to incoming calls. Can’t take a call? Now you can send a prewritten text reply to a caller directly from the call answer screen. It’s a nice way to let people know that you’re not ignoring them.
Internet Explorer improvements. You can now change your settings to prevent pictures from downloading automatically—an easy way to help keep data usage low. You can also delete selected sites from your browsing history and leave the rest intact.
Wi-Fi connectivity. Got a favorite Wi-Fi network? Windows Phone 8 will now prioritize Wi-Fi connections based on your connection history.
Other improvements. Includes many other improvements to Windows Phone.
The above features will be part of the additional platform updates and enhancements which Nokia mentioned in their update change log.

T-Mobile HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 update delayed

T-Mobile HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 update delayed

image
T-Mobile has announced on their support blog that the Windows Phone 8 software update for the HTC 8X has been delayed on their network.
The carrier said:
I know you were eagerly anticipating a new software update today and I wanted to give you a status update. In order to ensure the best possible experience with your device, we have temporarily delayed the release of the update to perform a few tweaks. We’re working hard to ensure that we get the update to you as quickly as possible.
Pocketnow notes that a delay such as this usually means some problem was detected, so it is probably best that it be fully fixed before the roll-out recommences. Hopefully it will not be an issue which also affect other OEMs also.
