BLU Products Intros New Tegra 3 Smartphones with Attractive Unlocked Prices

Do you hate commitment but want a big screen Android 4.0 smartphone with a fast Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor? You’ll want to take a look at three new smartphones debuting from BLU Products today: two phones with 4.5-inch displays, the Quattro 4.5 and the Quattro 4.5 HD, along with a phablet with 5.7-inch display, the Quattro 5.7 HD. All of them will be shipped running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but BLU promises to upgrade them to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, though there’s no definitive date set yet.
Perhaps the coolest thing about this trio is that BLU plans to sell all of them unlocked and ready for GSM and 21Mbps HSPA+ in the U.S., without the astronomical price tags that are typical of devices that aren’t carrier subsidized. At $349.99, the Quattro 4.5 HD is the priciest of the group. All three phones will work on T-Mobile and AT&T’s networks.

Quattro 4.5
This phone is the most affordable of the group. In addition to the quad-core Tegra 3 processor, it features as 4.5-inch qHD display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot expandable to 32GB, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and 1080p video recording. It’ll set you back $249.99 when it becomes available in the first week of February.
Quattro 4.5 HD
The Quattro 4.5 HD upgrades to an Advanced Super View 326 ppi HD curved display protected by Gorilla Glass, an 8-megapixel camera with a wide f/2.4 aperture lens and 1080p video recording. On the inside the Quattro 4.5 HD packs 16GB of internal memory and 1GB of RAM. It will also be available in the first week of February for $349.99.
Quattro 5.7 HD
This phablet features a 5.7-inch, 1280 x 720 HD display and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording capability. It has 4GB of internal storage coupled with a microSD card slot for memory expansion and 1GB of RAM. The Quattro 5.7 HD will be available at the end of March for $299.99.

HP Pavilion 14 ChromeBook Officially Available for $330 with Google Chrome OS

The HP Pavilion 14, the first ChromeBook ever offered by Hewlett Packard, now joins the ranks of niche devices running Google’s Chrome OS. The HP Pavilion 14 has a 14 inch display and is now available for $330.
HP Pavilion 14 ChromeBook Officially Available for $330 with Google Chrome OS
Last week the ChromeBook appeared very briefly on  HP’s website, only to disappear shortly thereafter. ChromeBooks are certainly not the most popular of devices, so its appearance comes as something of a surprise. The specifications are as follows:
  • 14’’ BrightView LED-backlit display (1366 x 768)
  • 0.83 inch thin – 3.96 lbs / 1.8 kg
  • Up to 4.25 hours of battery 1
  • Dual-core Intel® Celeron® Processor
  • 100 GB Google Drive Cloud Storage2 with 16GB Solid State Drive
  • Built-in dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and ethernet
  • HD Camera
  • 3x USB 2.0
  • HDMI Port
  • 2-in-1 memory card slot (SD, MMC)
  • Bluetooth 3.0™ Compatible
  • Kensington™ key lock compatible
The Pavilion 14 is one of the better looking ChromeBooks on the market and its certainly one of the bigger ones, but it’s also the most expensive. The Acer C7 ChromeBook runs for only $199 and boasts similar specifications. The Pavilion really beats it in terms of a sleek design though. The Samsung ChromeBook for $249 has a less powerful processor, so the Pavilion is one up there.
It will be interesting to see how HP does in the niche market of the ChromeBook.

Coming Soon: Windows PC Apps On Android Devices!

Now, if you weren’t under a rock or something you should be knowing that it is already possible to run Android apps on your PC without having to do complex, geeky things. You know, like downloading an SDK or having to use virtual machines and stuff.
Coming Soon: Windows PC Apps On Android Devices!

Thanks to the folks from over at BlueStacks, it has become child’s play to get your favorite apps running on your PC (or Mac). If you still don’t know about BlueStacks, Google it! It lets you run WhatsApp Messenger on your PC. Isn’t that a good enough reason to download it? Anyway – what if you are not happy with running Android Apps on your PC and want to do it the other way round? Like running your full-fledged PC applications on your puny little smartphone or tablet? Well until a few years ago this prospect was laughable but now – thanks to the insane computing prowess our modern smartphones and devices possess – this is very much a possibility and Wine will let you do exactly that. Until now Wine was a name synonymous with Linux. That was because it let programs designed for Windows platform run on Linux based systems. Now lest we forget, Android is based on Linux as well (don’t ask me much about it). Well, we are hearing that as I sleepily type this, folks behind Wine are slogging their behinds in order to bring Windows to Android. Like I said, this still is work under progress and once it is complete, you guys would be able to run full fledged PC applications on your ARM based tablet. Why someone would want to do it however is beyond me. But hey, on a serious note I am sure there would be enough takers for this. I can already see people orgasming over the prospect of running Windows Movie Maker on an Android tablet. Sigh!

HTC Mocks 41MP Count Of Nokia 808 PureView, Teases New Sound And Camera Experience

HTC Mocks 41MP Count Of Nokia 808 PureView, Teases New Sound And Camera Experience

Nokia vs HTC
In an official blog post about a brief history of photography, HTC has mocked the high megapixel count of Nokia 808 PureView device. Nokia 808 PureView comes with a 41MP camera which takes incredibly detailed and sharp photos. According to HTC, megapixel count doesn’t matter and they have quoted a reviewer’s comments on 808 PureView device as “won’t help you at all”. Following it, they have teased us that they will be revealing some new device with New Sound And Camera Experience.
According the various reports, HTC will reveal their new flagship Android device M7 with 4.7-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel camera, and a quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. According to Pocket-lint, HTC M7 camera will feature Ultrapixels.
From Pocket-lint,
HTC is to use a new camera sensor on its much-rumoured HTC M7 smartphone, Pocket-lint can confirm, which will use what the company calls Ultrapixels.
The new camera will instead be made up of three 4.3-megapixel sensor layers combined to give a resulting single image. Three lots of 4.3 may add up to around 13-megapixels, but images from HTC’s latest won’t be output at that larger size.
The technique, similar to that used by Sigma in the Foveon X3 sensor, means that three lots of data can represent one final pixel. All that extra data can be intelligently “combined” to generate a crisper, cleaner image and – in the case of the Foveon sensor – better colour accuracy.
The technique is also close to the way Nokia can handle image data with the camera in the 808 PureView, or Fujifilm’s EXR system in its compact cameras – but both companies opt for a more conventional sensor structure and use surrounding pixels to render one equivalent in a final image rather than the multiple-layered structure HTC is said to have opted for.
Can HTC trump Nokia in camera department?

Free Nokia Sonic CD and Super Monkeyball 2 now no longer available in the Windows Phone Store

Free Nokia Sonic CD and Super Monkeyball 2 now no longer available in the Windows Phone Store

wp_ss_20130204_0001wp_ss_20130204_0002
We reported a few days ago that Super Monkey Ball 2 and Sonic CD was free to Nokia Lumia owners.
It seems some-one at Nokia regretted the largesse, as the apps have suddenly become unavailable in the Windows Phone Store, giving the “This app is not available for your device” error.
Hopefully the games will return for those who missed out on the deal soon.

Microsoft announces support for Alipay in Chinese Windows Phone Store

Microsoft announces support for Alipay in Chinese Windows Phone Store

image_5F00_thumb_5F00_4503824C
In a blog post Microsoft announced support for Alipay, a Paypal-like network, for Windows Phones in China.
Windows Phone 8 owners in China can now pay for apps or games in the Windows Phone Store with the country’s most popular e-payment service. On the phone, customers can make purchases with Alipay or local credit and debit cards. The Windows Phone Store  requires Alipay for all payments.
Alipay payments will not be available for Windows Phone 7.8, who will need to use international credit cards.
Xbox Live games are now also supported in China.
Lastly apps now have a new “sold by” field which appears to be a kind of affiliate system where networks like MSN China, Sina, and Tencent get to sell Windows Phone Store apps, and also bear some responsibility for the support of the apps.

Nokia To Debut 41 Megapixel Lumia Branded Phone Later This Year?

Nokia To Debut 41 Megapixel Lumia Branded Phone Later This Year?

It’s been almost an year since Nokia took covers off its incredible PureView 808 Symbian powered
smartphone. While it did not exactly set the sales charts on fire, one year on, it is still considered the best camera phone there ever was. While competitors did try to out innovate Nokia, the PureView by far leads the charts when it comes to sheer camera quality. Nokia themselves had a hard time trying to match the quality of the PureView – but they did come up with the Lumia 920 which boasts of exceptional low light imaging abilities - and not to mention, class leading video capturing ability.
Nokia To Debut 41 Megapixel Lumia Branded Phone Later This Year?
What the Lumia 920 lacked however was the huge sensor seen on the 808. The PureView 808 as you might be aware, boasted of a 41 megapixel sensor which gave it the ability to achieve things like 4x lossless zoom – in both images and videos and to capture huge poster sized images of up to 38 megapixels in size. However, it seems Nokia is readying a brand new PureView branded device – this time powered by Windows Phone. And this one would get that huge 41 megapixel sensor – or may be a better version of it!
Rumors are on about Nokia’s new PureView handset that is set to debut most possibly on February 25. This device is rumored to get a 41 megapixel sensor and is likely too be dubbed the EOS. One feature that will make the EOS better the 808 PureView could be the floating lens technology that it would use. This would ensure that videos taken in shaky situations would turn out better. When it comes to still imaging, this will ensure less shaky images during low light photography.
Nokia has already issued invites to an event that is scheduled to happen on the 25th of February – on the sidelines of the MWC. It is thought that Nokia would have a few surprise up their sleeve on this day. My bet is on the new Nokia Tablet and the EOS.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop Comments On New Blackberry 10 Devices, Windows Based Tablets And More

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop Comments On New Blackberry 10 Devices, Windows Based Tablets And More

stephenelop1In an interview to Australian Financial Review, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop commented about the new Blackberry 10 platform devices, possibility of Nokia tablet and more.
On the query about Nokia releasing a Windows based tablet, he said that Nokia is learning from Microsoft’s Surface launch and will participate in the eco-system at right time.
“We haven’t announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely. We are studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet, so we are trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time.”
When asked about the recently launched Blackberry 10 devices, he focused on the point that Nokia’s R&D investment is now heavily biased towards the things that make them stand out. He cited the photography capabilities in Lumia 920 much better than recently launched devices including Blackberry 10.
“I wouldn’t want to comment on how it [BlackBerry] looks. But when a business person or consumer is purchasing a smartphone today, what they are actually buying is much more than what you see in your hand,” he said.
“They are certainly buying the hardware and operating system, but they are also buying the full range of applications that may be available for the device. They are buying the cloud based services that are required to make this a complete experience, like mapping, navigation and music.”
As a usual question, he was asked whether Nokia will do a Android devices, he explained the old story of choosing Windows Phone over Android and added the following about the current state of Android eco-system,
“On the Android side, we were very worried that we would be entering Android late relative to everyone else in the industry, that perhaps one vendor was already well on the road to being the dominant Android vendor at the expense of everyone else,” Mr Elop said.
“If we look back two years to when we made the decisions, then Samsung was big, HTC was pretty big and Motorola was pretty big. Of course what has happened in the two years isthat Samsung has captured the lion’s share of it and the others have been squeezed down to much smaller market share. We were worried about exactly that pattern forming.”

Nokia Lumia 800 WP 7.8 update causing low music volume issues

Nokia Lumia 800 WP 7.8 update causing low music volume issues

Did the volume reduce after the WP 7.8 update on the NL 800?
It seems Windows Phone 7.8 has been somewhat of a mixed blessing for those who update to the latest software.
Multiple users are complaining on the Nokia Discussions Forum that after the firmware update the phone’s volume when playing back music appears to be about half of what it was before, with music which could be comfortable listened to at volume 15 now needing to be cranked up to volume 30, and quiet music not being properly audible at all.
Reflashing to the old firmware corrects the issue, ruling out hardware to be the cause.
Many of the users complaining also had their devices flashed to WP 7.8 by Nokia Care, which one would assume would result in the best combination of compatible hardware and software.
Nokia has had a chequered history with audio problems with their Lumia range, and even their flagship,  the Nokia Lumia 920, is having audio problems, with audio automatically being capped when when loud music is played, resulting in periods of low volume until reboot. This issue affects the Nokia Lumia 820 also.
Have our readers had audio issues after the Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone 7.8 update? Let us know in the poll above and comments below.

Vodafone UK announces Windows Phone 8 “army” of 5 devices coming the 6th February

Vodafone UK announces Windows Phone 8 “army” of 5 devices coming the 6th February

In a blog post Vodafone UK announced that they will soon be carrying a full range of Windows Phone 8 handsets, including the popular Nokia Lumia 920.
Saying they have been working “night and day” to network test the devices, they promised to have the handsets ready for the market by the 6th of February.
The carrier will be offering the “windows Phone 8 army” of  Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and 620, as well as the the Windows Phone 8X and 8S by HTC; hopefully the phalanx of devices in store will help stimulate sales further in the UK.
See the list of devices as characterised by Vodafone after the break.

lumia-920-80x80Nokia Lumia 920
The 4G-ready Lumia 920 is Nokia’s new flagship. And rightly so; it’s a powerful, colourful, colossal phone. The PureView camera is Nokia’s ace in the hole, here. It captures images unlike any you’ve seen on a phone before. It’s going to be available in both black and yellow from 6th February.

820thumbNokia Lumia 820
The smaller 820 is no less impressive than the 920, and contains within its brains everything that makes Windows Phone 8 special. Its unique feature, though, is swappable backplate. It’s also 4G-ready for when our ultra-fast network launches later this year. You’ll be able to pick it up in either black or red from Vodafone.

lumia 620Nokia Lumia 620
The pocket-friendly Lumia 620 is the newest of Nokia’s Windows Phone handsets to be announced, rounding off the pack with a 3.8-inch display, 5-Megapixel camera and a 1GHz processor. It’ll be available in blue or white, but the beauty of the 620 – like the 820 – is that its colourful backplates can be swapped for a range of different hues.

HTC-8XthumbWindows Phone 8X by HTC
HTC’s Windows Phone wunderkind is both slinky and curvy, but still boasts a massive 4.3-inch display. That sits in front of a dual-core engine room with 1GB of RAM and an 8-Megapixel rear camera. You can choose from either California Blue or black.

HTC-8S-Blue-PairWindows Phone 8S by HTC
The 8S is a smaller offering than the 8X, but its more pocketable frame still houses all the live tile action and all the apps that Windows Phone 8 has to offer and it will be available in a colourful Atlantic Blue.

Vodafone will announced pricing at a later date.

Will BlackBerry 10 Save A Smartphone Pioneer?

Will BlackBerry 10 Save A Smartphone Pioneer?

Blackberry has put all their cards on the table. The new Blackberry 10 OS will determine the fate of the new Z10 and Q10 smartphones. We want to stop the bleeding of this smartphone pioneer and show that they can still be competitive with Apple, Google and Microsoft. But did Blackberry achieve that goal at yesterday’s launch event?

I’ve been looking forward to this event and the company formerly known as RIM completely overlooked Mobile Geeks. Thanks to a special invitation from fellow bloggers in the Middle East and Caribbean, we didn’t have to miss this event. After all, the feeling that something great could happen and the Canadianscould turn this thing around was very palpable.
For more than 3 years, I was an avid BlackBerry user and in particular, of the Bold models. The 9700 was my last smartphone with a physical keyboard before I, in late summer 2010 with the HTC Desire, switched to Android. For me it was quite a transformational experience and a real process (and yes, I missed the damn keyboard time and time again).

Honestly, with Blackberry I’m perhaps a little more subjective than all the other sites when I write comments or do tests on their devices. While half the world already championed the touchscreen smartphones with Android and iOS, I continued to wave the flag of the Canadians high in the air. I continued even when the competition grew overwhelming and the AppStore started to take over.
Who needed all those damned apps anyway? I used above all, email, messaging, calendar and my browser. My BlackBerry Bold 9700 was a messaging machine, a workhorse and I secretly liked the aura of Business and Enterprise it gave me. Look, I’m not playing, I’m working!
Well, and then it went downhill for RIM, which certainly has nothing to do with the fact that I left the boys and girls “from the Great White North” for Android. RIM didn’t bother to pay attention to the trends and what began as ignorance turned into arrogance. If every quarter you’re pulling off incredible sales and remarkable success, if everything you do seems like gold, you have to look over your shoulder every now and then to make sure the competition isn’t sneaking up on you. If you don’t, the competition will assuredly steal your thunder with a wild innovation that turns the market on its head. Blackberry and Nokia had to learn the hard way.
The BlackBerry PlayBook launch event in September of 2010 in San Francisco, summed up all of this for me. Nicole and I were already in place and wanted get to accredited the week before. The competent staff at Blackberry turned a simple procedure into an absolute mess of such nonsense that I have never experienced before or since in the tech industry.
The event itself confirmed that the “Reality Distortion Field” was alive and well. Blackberry boasted sensational numbers like: “We are market leader in the 17-21-year old in Indonesia.” I wanted to scream in the hall, “Who listens to this marketing bullshit? YOur ship is already sinking!”
Well, the Playbook was a highlight for me. Their Tablet OS, even in 2013, is by far the best performing and most intuitive operating system for the tablet platform. The people at QNX have worked hard and shown what is possible.

Now, Blackberry 10
On January 30th came the turning point and I had the good fortune to be present in Dubai. Honestly, the first 25 minutes of the presentation left me thinking of the worst experiences I’d had with BlackBerry in the past. The marketing message was very one-dimensional and listless.
The product presentation made me sit up and inspired new excitement. Yes, the BlackBerry Balance is great, the lift looks great and the virtual keyboard is intriguing. That sets new standards.
BlackBerry 10 is practically a pressure bandage that stops the bleeding, but I fear that this has come far too late! In January 2012, the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone would have been a killer and its features would have been followed with exclamation points. Now I tend to be more likely to say that it is a bit “too little, too late” and that is because the ultimate killer feature is missing. It just doesn’t have a feature that does it all. It needs an app which you can show to an Android or iOS user and watch as their jaws drop.
Blackberry desperately needed a WOW factor. Sure, there will be the professional users who have migrated in recent years to Android and iOS, who might take a look at the platform and change back. But it’s a big maybe and I doubt that the Canadians will find themselves back in the limelight as one of the 3 big smartphone ecosystems.
I really hoped that Blackberry would astound with something truly new. Neither iOS or Android are really competitors for Blackberry. Windows Phone is actually the true competitor. Both find themselves in the executive category. Therein lies Blackberry’s dim and flickering hope for a brightly ignited flame.
Blackberry 10 is a necessary milestone for the Canadians, nothing more. They needed an extra push forward to be competitive in 2013.

Fitbit confirms they are working on a Windows Phone app, to be released “soon”

Fitbit confirms they are working on a Windows Phone app, to be released “soon”

fitbit-photo1
We posted recently that Fitbit’s twitter support teased a Windows Phone app, but did not quite confirm it.
The company in fact already has a Windows 8 app, making the Windows Phone app a no-brainer.
They have now replied to a reader enquiring about Windows Phone support with the following message:
Hello,
We are glad to help with your inquiry about the Windows 8 Phone app.
Let us advise that currently our team is working on developing a compatible app for Windows 8 Phones. We do not have an estimated date for the release yet, but we do expect to be soon. Currently, you can sync with Apple Bluetooth 4.0 compatible devices, and by the end of this month, we will release an update for the Android app, which will allow Andriod users to sync via Bluetooth as well.
Please let us know if you have any other question.
Sincerely,
Oscar Fernando and the Fitbit Team
The note does raise an issue – the latest Fitbit uses Bluetooth Low Energy – not a feature of Windows Phone 8 as far as we know, but supported by the hardware in phones like the Nokia Lumia 920. Given the new flexibility in the Bluetooth stack of Windows Phone 8 for 3rd party developers however this may not be an insurmountable issue.
Thanks to our tipster.

The company has just launched the  Nokia Lumia 920 on their network. The press release confirmed the Nokia Lumia 920 was DC-HSDPA compatible, though it did not confirm LTE support specifically.

Nokia Lumias amongst the most popular handsets in UK in January 2013

Nokia Lumias amongst the most popular handsets in UK in January 2013

Mobile Tracker - the UK's most popular mobile phones this week - uSwitch.com.htm_20130203171216
Phone tracking website uSwitch reports that Nokia’s cheaper phones are making a strong showing in January in the post-Christmas belt-tightening, to the detriment of expensive phones like the iPhone.
uSwitch telecoms spokesman Ernest Doku told Mobile News UK said: “The UK’s loyalty to brand Samsung is unwavering, but beyond that we’ve seen customers shaking-up the rankings, leaving Apple’s 4S for dust in favour of offerings from Lexus and Nokia.”
The list features 4 Nokia phones, two feature phones, and two Nokia Lumias, the Lumia 800 and 610.
In total the list consisted of 3 Samsung handsets, 4 Nokia handsets, one LG and two iPhones.
“A swathe of bargain smartphones like the C2-01 have leapt back into the chart as a residual effect of gifting and January sales, whilst canny consumers also wait to see high-end devices around the corner.”
“The mobile market is no stranger to a bit of January belt-tightening, with tech fans looking for sensible deals following a seasonal gadget binge.”
“With the launch of a revamped BlackBerry in the full-touch flagship Z10 and Nokia’s Lumia 620 looking to disrupt the affordable end of the spectrum, expect some significant movement in the coming weeks – not to mention major smartphone announcements amidst February’s Mobile World Congress.”
The Nokia Lumia 620 has just become available in UK, and appears to best address the penny-pinching mood in UK which should see the budget handset doing well over the next few months.
