Microsoft teases “exciting” windows phone news at CES today

Microsoft teases “exciting” windows phone news at CES today

The official Windows Phone account has tweeted the above  tease suggesting we will see something “exciting” later today.
There are a number of possibilities, ranging from the rather mundane and expected announcement of the Huawei Ascend W1 to Sprint announcing a Windows Phone to something really interesting, like the Nokia Lumia 920 becoming available on Verizon.
What do our readers think Microsoft will reveal today? Let us know below.

Nokia pulls NL 920 Portico ROMs from Navifirm

Nokia pulls NL 920 Portico ROMs from Navifirm

We have been tipped that Nokia has removed all the Windows Phone 8 Update ROMs for the Nokia Lumia 920 from Navifirm recently.
The reasons are of course not know, but one of two possibilities are that Nokia wants to stop 920 owners from installing it before they lock down Navifirm at the end of the month.
A less benign explanation is that Nokia has detected bugs in the firmware and needs more time to fix them.
Given that Portico has been less than trouble-free the second explanation is as likely as the first.
Which one do our readers think is right? Let us know below.

Nokia sells more than 70% of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but HTC 8X does benefit from being on more carriers

Nokia sells more than 70% of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but HTC 8X does benefit from being on more carriers

Adduplex have released some data to Paul Thurrott which indicates that Nokia’s dominance of Windows Phone has continued into the Windows Phone 8 generation, with Nokia selling nearly 80% of Windows Phone 8 handsets worldwide.
The data also shows a hunger for high-end handsets, with 3 times more Nokia Lumia 920 handsets being sold as Nokia Lumia 820s. The HTC 8S does not even chart.
In USA the Nokia Lumia 920 also dominates on AT&T, with 71% of Windows Phones sold there being 920s. The HTC 8X is the choice of only 18% of buyers, while the Nokia Lumia 820 is being purchased by only 11%.
Overall in the US however it seems with the wider distribution of Windows Phones on Verizon  also, AT&T’s portion of the handsets have reduced, with the Nokia Lumia 920 now only 43% of Windows Phone 8 handsets, while 46% of Windows Phone 8 handsets being sold on Verizon and T-Mobile combined.
The HTC 8X managed to make up ground by being on the other carriers in US selling 50% more on T-Mobile and Verizon than it did on AT&T by itself, suggesting Nokia could have sold nearly 2.5 times as many Nokia Lumia 920 handsets if it was available on all carriers.
Overall Windows Phone 8 handsets are now 20% of all Windows Phones, up from 5% month ago, suggesting they have enjoyed pretty good sales.
We expect to have the full set of data tomorrow to look at all the nuances, but it remains pretty clear than Windows Phone 8 is Nokia game to lose at this minute.

Stephen Elop On Nokia Android Device: “Anything Is Possible”

Stephen Elop On Nokia Android Device: “Anything Is Possible”

In an interview to Gizmodo, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop answered somewhat positively to the possibility of Nokia Android device in the future. Nokia decided on Windows Phone platform leaving Android citing the differentiation factor among other Android OEMs.
Here is the response of Stephen Elop,
Do you discard launching an Android phone next year?
Elop: In the current ecosystem wars we are using Windows Phone as our weapon. But we are always thinking about what’s coming next, what will be the role of HTML 5, Android… HTML5 could make the platform itself—being Android, Windows Phone or any other—irrelevant in the future, but it’s still too soon [to tell]. Today we are committed and satisfied with Microsoft, but anything is possible.
He also stated that Nokia is fully committed to Windows Phone 8 platform right now and sees good positive growth so far.
I can’t give figures, but the first objective, without giving any dates, is getting a double-digit marketshare. Then, keep pushing and establish an equilibrium with the other two big ecosystems, Apple and Android.

T-Mobile Germany working on offering Visual Voicemail for Windows Phone 8

T-Mobile Germany working on offering Visual Voicemail for Windows Phone 8

T-Mobile in Germany, like most carriers, do not offer visual voice mail on Windows Phone, despite the feature being built into the OS and usually provided for the iPhone.
Some angry Windows Phone complained on their forums about paying for a service the carrier was not delivering, and after initially saying in November last year that the service will not be available, they have returned last week and confirmed the carrier was working at providing Visual Voicemail to their Windows Phone 8 customers.
Of note however is that the support staff has not said they are working on Data Sense, the other half of the question.  The feature is unfortunately carrier dependent, meaning things as simply as finding the nearest WIFI hotspot is still dependent on carriers signing up for the service.
See the thread at T-Mobile Germany here.

Germany’s Media Markt start taking pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 620

Germany’s Media Markt start taking pre-orders for the Nokia Lumia 620

One of our favourite Windows Phones is the unpretentious Nokia Lumia 620, which offers great value for money in an attractive package which does not unnecessarily hamstrung users.
If it therefore great to hear that the Windows Phone 8 smartphone is starting to roll out into the market, with Germany’s Media Markt starting to take pre-orders for the smartphone.
Media Markt will be offering the handset at 269 Euro ($355) which is somewhat more than the $250 which Nokia suggested as the retail price, even including Germany’s 19% VAT, but hopefully this is simply to leave scope for price reductions after the launch.
As a reminder the specs of the handset are as follows:
  • 1 GHz dual-core processor
  • 3.8 inch LCD display (800 x 480) with ClearBlack technology
  • 8GB internal memory expandable with microSD
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • 1300 mAh Battery
  • Colors / Cover (changeable): green-yellow, white, yellow, magenta, cyan, black
The handset is unfortunately only expected sometime in “Spring” but in all likelihood will arrive in February. See the range available  Media Markt here .

HTC posts lowest profit in Q4 2012 since 2004

HTC posts lowest profit in Q4 2012 since 2004

With the introduction of the HTC 8X and 8S as “Signature Windows Phones” we are back to caring about the company’s performance and outlook, and the message unfortunately is not rosy.
One of our 2013 predictions was that HTC would become loss-making in Q2 2013, and the company certainly seems  to be heading that way.
HTC only generated NT$1 billion ($34 million) in profit in Q4 2012, despite the introduction of the HTC 8X and HTC 8S and the HTC J Butterfly Android handset in Japan.  These devices were however only released mid-quarter, and may have not had enough time to make an impact on their financials.
The profit is down from an already meagre $133 million in Q3 2012 and close to 10% of their $322 million Q4 2011 earnings.
HTC’s problems are symptomatic of the whole industry’s malaise, with only Samsung and Apple doing really well.  HTC CEO Peter Chou said they would combat the issue with increased marketing and more innovative products.
At this stage it is unclear if HTC’s troubles will increase or decrease their commitment to their Windows Phone products, which are said to be having a good uptake in USA, but are widely seen as playing second fiddle to Nokia’s Windows Phones, with less than a quarter of the Windows Phone market share.

NokiaPowerUser report that two Windows Phone 8 handsets are charting high on Singaporean carrier Singtel, with the mid-range HTC 8S and low-end HTC 8S both regularly amongst the best sellers on the carrier.
Singtel is also selling the Nokia Lumia 920, but unfortunately have not received a shipment in a while, with the device currently being out of stock.

Windows Live Calendar Holidays go missing in UK, Australia, maybe elsewhere

Windows Live Calendar Holidays go missing in UK, Australia, maybe elsewhere

no-holidays-freelancing
It seems Microsoft has forgotten all Christmas cheer, as the public holidays calendar in Windows Live, which gets synchronized down to Windows Phones automatically, are blank in both Australia and UK for the whole of 2013.
The issue has already been reported on Microsoft’s support forums on the 27th December, and apparently has been escalated, with the product team aware of it since the 2nd, but it seems the problem still persist.
Of course in the greater scheme of things this is a rather small bug, but one should be aware that if you relied on your phone to tell you when the next public holiday is it may be wise to purchase a calendar instead, at least for now.

Sprint teases “Windows Phone 8 is coming soon!”

Sprint teases “Windows Phone 8 is coming soon!”

image
Sprint is the only US carrier not to have a Windows Phone 8 handset, and has been rather ambivalent about supporting the OS, famously saying they were waiting to see if it would sell before jumping in.
It seems that is about to change, as Sprint’s support page now has the above message:
Learn more about Windows Phone 8
Windows Phone 8 is coming soon
The message dates from only 3 days ago, on the 3rd January, and suggests we may see a Windows Phone 8 handset on Sprint sooner rather than later.
The company has in fact confirmed as far back as November that they will be carrying a Windows Phone 8 handset, then telling PCMag “Sprint and Microsoft are partnering to bring Windows Phone 8 to Sprint’s customers – operating on its 4G LTE network – next year.” It is nice to see Sprint follow through on that commitment.
Given Sprint’s good relationship with HTC, it seems likely we will see at least one handset from that OEM.  Do our readers think we will see any others? Let us know below.

Nokia Lumia 920 coming to East Africa this January

Nokia Lumia 920 coming to East Africa this January

Midcom is the Telecommunication arm of Midland Group and is the exclusive distributor of Nokia Phones in 11 countries across East and West Africa.
The company has operations in Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana and sales coverage across Ethiopia, Togo, Cameroon, D. R. C. and Ivory Coast. It provides Nokia with the single biggest mobile phone distribution platform across the India, Middle-east and Africa Region.
The company has now posted on their Facebook page that the Nokia Lumia 920 will be coming to East Africa in a number of colours this January.
This may make it the fastest roll-out of this premium Nokia windows phone yet, and once again an indication that Nokia is now able to ramp up the supply of the handset and serve many more markets.
Hopefully this will allow Nokia to maintain or even increase shipment numbers in Q1 2013 at the same or higher levels than Q4 2012.

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 coming to India on the 11th January?

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 coming to India on the 11th January?

nokiacarechat
Well, here we go again. It seems the release of the Nokia Lumia 920 in India has been pushed up another week, with Nokia Care telling those enquiring that the handset and its mid-range brother, the 820, will be released to the market on the 11th January.
Mobigyaan have their own record of a similar conversation, suggesting the company is finally settling on a date.
Nokia is remaining rather cagey regarding prices also, with some reporting that it will be “less that Rs. 40,000” ($736), which is of course rather unhelpful. Nokia is taking reservations for the handset for a RS 2,000 deposit however.
The handset which will likely be more mainstream in India, the Nokia Lumia 620, is according to Nokia Care also set to hit the market in the 4th week of January. Again pricing has not been released, but the device will likely be a lot more affordable.
Have any of our readers put in pre-orders yet? Let us know below.
Thanks Ashwanth, Shivansh and Amol for the tips
