Nokia Lumia 920T, unlike the iPhone, to be deeply subsidized in China

Nokia Lumia 920T, unlike the iPhone, to be deeply subsidized in China

imageThe Nokia Lumia 920T is currently on pre-order on China Mobile, the largest carrier in the world, for 4599 Yuan, or around $738.
For a country with an average yearly income of only a few hundred dollars this is of course pretty pricy, but a poster on Seeking Alpha believes the handset is set to soon have a huge boost.
Daily Finance reported the handset it set to be heavily subsidized in China, something which is pretty unusual on the carrier.
They write:
Which brings us to the latest news coming out of China. China Mobile is taking pre-orders of the Lumia 920T at the $740 price point until it receives stock from Nokia in January of 2013. However, China Mobile announced that it intends to subsidize the cost of the 920T for customers that sign up for a two-year data plan. What will the Lumia cost customers, after subsidies, in China? All of 1 Yuan.
Jacob Steinberg on Seeking Alpha reports that China Mobile has a limited budget of around $4.1 billion to subsidize phones, and that this means most handsets are not subsidized.  This apparently includes the iPhone, with China Mobile not being able to reach agreement with Apple over their demands for a deep subsidy.
Nokia did however make the list, and from next year the issue of a large upfront payment will be removed out of the equation, which should boost Lumia sales pretty aggressively, if Nokia can keep up with supply of course.

Tip: An easy way to send Direct Messages without an app on Windows Phone

Tip: An easy way to send Direct Messages without an app on Windows Phone

wp_ss_20121224_0001dm
There are many Windows Phone users who say they do not need a 3rd party Twitter app due to the built-in functionality in the Windows Phone People Hub.
Without knowing this tip however they will not be able to share messages in private via Direct Messaging.
The trick is simply to place a D in front of the twitter name, which will convert the tweet to a direct message.
As can be seen from the screen shot above, it seems to work pretty well.

Windows Phone 8 rapidly replacing WP7 on WMPoweruser.com

Windows Phone 8 rapidly replacing WP7 on WMPoweruser.com

image
Here is a bit of info that may be of interest to our readers. Since the introduction of Windows Phone 8 the OS has seen incredibly rapid adoption by our readers, with almost half of our Windows Phone mobile readers now using a Windows Phone 8 handset. (Current standing WP7 52.3, WP8 47.7)
Of course this is to be expected from our enthusiast community, but it is still much faster than I expected, and if enthusiast users are also the ones who buy and use apps, it may be good news for developers looking to make Windows Phone 8 specific apps.
The data is gathered from our Google Analytics. Let us know directly what Windows Phone OS you are using in the poll below.
Are you using WP7 or WP8?

Billionaire Mark Cuban Replaces His iPhone With Nokia Lumia 920, Says iOS Is Not Even Close To Windows Phone

Mark Cuban, an American Billionaire who owns famous NBA team Dallas Mavericks did an AMA on Reddit. When asked about the gadgets he uses everyday, he surprised everyone by saying that he replaced his iPhone with a Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone device. Here is the response from Reddit,
Speaking of which, what kind of laptop do you own? And mp3 player? Are they customized or are they whatever is on the market?
I have a MacBook Air, but am trying the new Acer with Windows 8. I really, really like Windows 8 on my phone. I have 2 phones. first is samsung the 2nd was an Iphone5. THe new Nokia with windows replaced my Iphone 5
What? You mean you don’t use T-Mobile 4G? Color me shocked!!!
i actually do on my samsung. I love the tmobile wifi calling option. I love the open Android and Samsung platforms. I use a replacement keyboard sw which increases my typing speed (i still miss the speed typing on my sidekick).
I love myIPad and my macbook air is amazing when it doesnt crash, so i like apple products, but i think as far as phones, both Samsung 3 w android and the windows phone kick the Iphone’s ass. Its not even close.
Apart from the planned celebrity endorsements from Microsoft or Nokia, I think these kind of good words from notable persons should raise awareness about the Nokia Lumia device and the Windows Phone platform.

Acer’s Rumored New Year’s Resolution: Launch a $99 Android Tablet

Acer’s Rumored New Year’s Resolution: Launch a $99 Android Tablet

The prices of tablets from top-tier manufacturers just keep tumbling down, down, down. Acer’s reportedly working on an offering that would make even the $160 price tag of the original Kindle Fire seem exorbitant; the rumored Acer Iconia B1 slate should launch next year for the budget-friendly price of just $99, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The 7-inch tablet should sport internals similar to the aforementioned Kindle Fire, with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and a ho-hum 1024 x 600 display resolution. The Iconia B1 first reared its blue-rimmed head in photos leaked on a Serbian forum—pictures that the WSJ’s sources say are authentic.
Here’s the kicker: While Acer has submitted the Iconia B1 to the FCC for U.S. certification, it’s not clear whether or not the company plans to launch the tablet stateside. Instead, the focus for this particular model will be emerging tablet markets such as China, the WSJ’s sources claim. That shouldn’t come as a surprise; while those pedestrian specs will seem very outdated in the U.S. by the time the Iconia B1 is allegedly set to launch in 2013, low-cost slates are expected to be a booming segment for tablet makers in other parts of the world.

Nokia also targeting online sales in China, ties up with second largest Chinese eTailer

imageNokia has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with 360buy.com, the second-largest  e-commerce retailer in China, with annual sales of 30.8 billion yuan in 2011.
"Online shopping is booming in China," said Gustavo Eichelmann, chief executive officer of Nokia China. "Nokia will strengthen cooperation with third party e-commerce websites."
The move is in preference to Nokia opening its own Chinese online store.
In return  360buy.com agreed to purchase 2 billion yuan (US$320 million) worth of mobile phones from Nokia next year.
The company is already selling the Nokia Lumia 920, and Wang Xiaosong, vice-president of 360buy.com, said that about 3,000 units of Lumia 920 had been sold the first day the product landed on 360buy.
All future Nokia devices will sell through online and offline channels in China simultaneously, Eichelmann confirmed.
About 30 million mobile phones are expected to be sold online in China this year, up 68 per cent from 2011, according to a report issued by SINO Market Research. The growth rate is more than 10 times that for mobile phones that were sold in offline outlets during the period.

Interesting analysis suggests Android is a net negative for Google, but investors do not realize it yet

Interesting analysis suggests Android is a net negative for Google, but investors do not realize it yet

image
An interesting analysis by Sal Marvasti from Technoor Consulting posted on Seeking Alpha suggests Google is not doing half as well from Android as could be expected from the dominant position of the OS in the marketplace.
Google owns desktop search, and also seemingly owns the mobile market.  While investors are very happy about this situation, Marvasti argues compared to Microsoft Google is in a pretty bad situation.
Google’s revenue stream in the main remains ads, be they on mobile or desktop. It does not earn direct revenue from device sales, and most apps on Google Play are free. Distimo estimates Apple generates $5.4m a day in app sales for the top 200 grossing iPhone and iPad apps while  Google Play, only generates $679,000 for the 200 top-grossing apps on Google Play, or about 12% of Apple’s revenue. Running the store likely costs a lot more than that.
In terms of generated search ad income, the mobile web usage per Android handset is much less than that per iPhone, suggesting Google makes more from each iPhone user than each Android user, in a similar way to how Google made their money from Windows desktop users. With Google’s products much in demand still on Windows and Windows Phone, it makes Google’s refusal to develop for the platforms rather unwise.
This is highlighted by a third point – each additional Android user is likely already a Google user on the desktop, and encouraging them to use Google on their Android phone instead of their Windows desktop simply means downsizing their revenue from desktop ad dollars to mobile pennies.
On the other hand, given Microsoft’s small search business, it is much more likely each new Windows Phone user is also a new Bing user, potentially taking revenue away from Google’s search earnings.
Sal also notes Google’s growth is slowing, while Microsoft’s search business is growing steadily at over 10% year on year since 2010, and that Windows Phones are much better monetized than Android, due to license fees from the OS and a more cohesive ecosystem and device portfolio.  In fact Microsoft even earns patent license fees From Android while Google does not.
He also argues that Android’s strength is in the low-end of the market, and that it is in fact losing market share there to RIM and cheap Nokia Asha handsets, which were surprise hits in  2012, cutting Android’s market share from 50% of new phones in 2011 to just under 40% in 2012.
In many ways Google is in a bizarre catch 22 situation – the more their phones are adopted and used, the more they cost to support via Google Play and other services, the less they earn from desktop ads, and the less they feel they need to serve other platforms, which would have earned them money without all the support costs associated with Android. The pyrrhic victory will ultimately end up burning Google’s cash flow.
He concludes:
If you own Google vs. Microsoft (MSFT), based on the mobile operating systems, we think you should take a closer look at your choice. Google is a faster growing business, heading for significant headwind; Amazon rip-off of Android, fracturing of the ecosystem and lack of a proper business plan for Android. Meanwhile, Microsoft already dominates the living room with Xbox, has entered mobile strongly (WP8) and can only grow in internet ad revenue. We agree with the IDC projections, where Android is predicted to lose 10% share over the next 3 years. The loss of 10% share is not a disaster for Google, particularly as it does not derive much revenue from Android. However, a gain of 10% in mobile share for WP8 is a boon to Bing.
Furthermore, we like the segmented market approach that Microsoft is taking with Windows Phone, keeping apps compatible via virtual software technology implemented on two different operating systems (WP7 and WP8). Microsoft is our long term (24 Month) pick from these companies. As Nokia’s partner their Online Business Division will benefit in a variety of ways as mobile penetration of WP8 increases.
Google investors should realize they are now dealing with slower growth and higher risk in the form of large Android expenditure with no clear return and continued risks from absorbing Motorola’s handset business.

VLC team directs remaining KickStarter time to speed VLC for Windows Phone 8

VLC team directs remaining KickStarter time to speed VLC for Windows Phone 8

imageThe VideoLan team reached their £40,000 goal with 5 days to spare yesterday. Now they have announced that any additional money they raise will go towards speeding up bringing the client to Windows Phone 8.
The team had previously said they would eventually bring the software to Windows Phone 8, but only after doing a Windows RT client. Many believe it will be 2014 before the software gets to the Windows Phone 8 store.
Now they announced their intent, depending on the funds raised, to parallelize the work, and do the Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 client simultaneously.
They write:
Dear backers,
This evening, we crossed our goal of £40,000. Thanks again for your generous support and for allowing us to realize our project!
Any further money coming in will greatly speed up the availability of our port of VLC to Windows Phone 8, since it will allow us to parallelize the workload of the ports to Windows 8 / RT and Phone.
Furthermore, we would like to propose a few additional features, on which we will be working full-time after the initial release is done and as long as money is left:
  • camera input support — This allows you to record anything your connected cameras can see and to stream it live where ever you like.
  • DLNA client and server integration — Play media stored on DLNA capable servers on your Windows RT tablet or Windows Phone — Stream everything VLC can play on your tablet or Windows 8 PC to your DLNA capable devices (Xbox, …).
  • integration with locally attached devices for media playback and synchronization
  • Smartglass support
Thanks again for all your feedback and your support. We are looking forward to go all-in on this project!
Given that the work is now a relatively safe bet, if you want the app on your Windows Phone this year rather than next, a small donation is a pretty good idea.
See the KickStarter here.

Microsoft kicks of The Hobbit Windows Phone cross promotion

hobbit
While I am sure Microsoft paid dearly for the right to use The Hobbit movie in their marketing for Windows Phone, we have surprisingly not seem much results from that yet.
That is now finally changing, with Microsoft creating a mini-site on Windows Phone.comjust for the movie, featuring Bilbo’s start screen and his SkyDrive, essential for backing up on those unexpected journeys.
The page also features some free Hobbit Lock Screen Wallpapers, which can be downloaded using these QRCodes below.

Windows Phone Design Head: Windows Phone 8 is what we always to release 3 years ago

Windows Phone Design Head: Windows Phone 8 is what we always to release 3 years ago

WP7forum.ru had a frank discussion with  Eugene Gavrilov, head of design integration Microsoft Windows Phone which produced some interesting titbits.
Eugene has been with Windows Phone for about 5 years now, from the time when the system was rebooted from Windows Mobile.
When asked why the Windows Phone 7.5 start screen was changed in Windows Phone 8, with the tiles becoming full screen, he revealed that the idea of resizable tiles were there from the start, but was difficult to implement in the first release of the OS.
Calling Windows Phone 7 the first test, he said the current design was in  fact that which was originally conceived, but that they did not have  time to implement all their plans in the first versions. Noting that screen sizes have increased, it was now more imperative to allow users to use their home screen more effectively.
Explaining further, he said:
Simply speaking, initially it was all planned, but not implemented, has not worked through. The process of creating the OS – it is a long and very difficult process. At a time when releasing a new release, usually already done half of the next release. Our team is always working to stay ahead, because the developers need a lot of time to implement the functionality. This is why designers have to work at least six months and sometimes a year in advance. The basic concepts are made much earlier how programmers get to work. The development cycle is constructed as follows: immediately after the release of starting to write code for the new release, but at this point, you must have already approved layouts. And so it turns out that we have to live in the future ;)
But the resource developers are often limited in time, so part of our planned features that do not have time to implement, simply transfer the next release.
Especially, there are many restrictions when dealing with the design of the operating system. Designers need to understand, for example, whether a year is a feature available with the new hardware technology. Will the demand for such a screen size or density of pixels, which are usually taken into account today.
Why releases published once a year? Not because all such lazy. A process of testing the phone takes 3-4 months. All clearly laid out: the appointed time has come release path that consists of a number of stages. And every step of their hard, long and interesting.
He also revealed that Microsoft does in fact pay attention to the suggestions on their USerVoice page, with the suggestions collected, assessed and reviewed for technical feasibility  Some requests were however simply not possible at the time.
As a designer, he also made it clear that not all apps should be shoe-horned into the Metro design language  noting for kids colourful, flashing designs were still appropriate, while Metro was more appropriate to highlight content with adults.
On Windows Phone 8, he said it was where they wanted the OS to be 3 years ago, but that Windows Phone 7 users greatly assisted with the development of the platform.
He said on the new core updates will come more frequently, due to being able to update only core files rather than the whole ROM.
He also said Windows Phone 7.8 may be the last version of the legacy OS, but that this depended on how the market responded to the Windows Phone 7.8 devices currently being released in India, Russia and China.  ”If we find that the activity of smartphone users is quite high, the Windows Phone 7.x branch will continue to develop,” he noted.

Review: Nokia Fatboy wireless charging pillow

Review: Nokia Fatboy wireless charging pillow

Nokia’s new Lumia devices offer some great new features. Not only new camera and display technologies are built into the Lumia 920 (or 820), but also wireless charging. Sure, wireless charging is nothing that new. Palm used this technology some years ago already, but Nokia has a much greater chance of taking the technology mainstream, and it is of note that now  Samsung, LG and HTC now use it too, but not with as much promotion.
For charging your smartphone wirelessly Nokia offers several ways. One way is the wireless charging pillow, the others are the wireless charging plate (which is actually pretty much the same as the pillow…) and the wireless charging stand with NFC built in. I will now take a look at the pillow.
As I mentioned, the pillow is actually pretty much the same as the charging plate. Why? Because the pillow is just something to put over the plate, means in the package there is the normal charging plate and the pillow, which gets pulled over the plate.
However, the pillow (made by Fatboy) is high quality. The material feels great and the seams are sewn very well. I received the yellow version and the colour is identically to my yellow Lumia. The pillow is filled with a soft material, making it a real pillow and not only a piece of textile. Because of this you can easily lay it next to you on the couch next to your other pillows without getting annoyed by the thick, short USB cable or your phone. If you turn the pillow around you won’t notice your phone anymore and it looks (and almost feels) like a normal pillow. Anyways, I personally don’t know if this is worth 20€, because that is the premium you pay when getting the pillow instead of just the plate, but I guess it is up to the buyer  to know if laying your phone next to you on the couch or bed is worth 20€ instead of just laying it on the table with “only” the plate.
The plate is made of plastic and feels a little bit cheap (maybe because it is so light?). However, it looks great and the colour is exactly like the phone’s as well. On the front there is a little LED light which lights up when it is charging. Unfortunately the plate does not stop automatically when the phone is finished charging.
Anyways, the comfort you get with wireless charging is indescribable! It may sound exaggerated, but once you have the option to charge your phone wirelessly you don’t want to go back to the old way of charging… After work, or school, or whatever, you just need to put your phone on the plate and it starts charging. No plugging in and out, no annoying cables. And charging doesn’t even take much longer! I did not measure the time, but there is definitely not a big difference.
I really fell in love with wireless charging… too bad my pillow is just for testing and I have to give it back (but hey, it’s Christmas ;-) ). The comfort wireless charging offers is great. Without plugging in you just need to put your phone on the wireless charging plate, and it does not take much longer to charge. With the pillow you can also lay your phone next to you on the couch or in bed because it is filled with a soft and nice material. If you turn around the pillow, you don’t even notice it is a charger and it looks and feels like a normal small pillow. However, I doubt this is worth 20€ more than what you pay for just the plate.
