Day Eleven – 25 Days of Christmas Photos

Day Eleven – 25 Days of Christmas Photos

The Christmas lights are coming out!
Denny’s neighbors put up these lights on their house, and Denny snapped a picture of them with his Lumia 920. They did a nice job outlining their house, and putting those lights up on the tree branches must have taken some time!

Submit your own photo! (See past photos)
  1. Take a pic using your Windows Phone and do NOT edit it! No Instagram-style shots!
  2. Email the pic to wpholiday@outlook.com, including…
    1. Your first name
    2. The phone you used
    3. Describe the picture, why it’s important, or whatever you want to say!

Free NFCsms app makes Windows Phones compatible with SMS NFC tags

Free NFCsms app makes Windows Phones compatible with SMS NFC tags

NFCsms-Overview-600x450
Windows Phone 8 supports NFC tags, but not all the available protocols. Fortunately the new OS is now extensible, based on file extensions and also URI schema.
This has allowed NFC Interactor to create a free app which allows Windows Phones with NFC to respond appropriately to NFC tags which would normally activate the sending of an SMS message, as is common in Europe to access some information services e.g to query bus schedules or through premium SMS even purchase small services, like public transport tickets.
NFCsms extends the Windows Phone platform to enable sending SMS messages from NFC tags and web links.
Installing NFCsms is a seamless experience. If the user taps an NFC tag that contains SMS information, Windows Phone will automatically search the Store for compatible apps – the free NFCsms app will appear and can be installed.
From then on, WP8 is compatible to SMS tags. Tapping an NFC tag will show the correct “Compose text message?” prompt. If the user accepts, the phone’s messaging app will be opened immediately, allowing to review the number & contents and to send the message. The NFCsms app never shows any user interface.
You can download the free NFCsms app for all NFC capable Windows Phone 8 devices from the Windows Phone Store.

Pioneer Computers Presents DreamBook T14 Touchscreen Ultrabook

The Australian company Pioneer Computers recently introduced the DreamBook T14, a touchscreen ultrabook with a relatively decent price. The ultrabook features a 14 inch display and the latest Intel processors for under $750. That’s the good news. The bad news is, there are some strange limitations.
Pioneer Computers Presents DreamBook T14 Touchscreen Ultrabook
At entry-level price, the customer gets the DreamBook T14 with only a 16 GB SSD and no operating system. Even for Linux lovers, such specifications sound nonsensical. Windows 8 is available, but it will cost you an extra $102. If you choose to configure the DreamBook with a resonable SSD with 64-GB, you’ll have to shell out $150 more. For a 128 GB SSD, add $230. Ultimately, to have an ultrabook you can live with, the price rises to nearly $1,000, which isn’t quite the bargain you hoped for.
Aside from the stupid configuration confusion, the unit is actually quite interesting. It features a 14 inch touchscreen display with a 1366 × 768 resolution and has an Intel Core i3-3217U (1.8 GHz), i5-3317U (1.7 GHz to 2.6 GHz via Turbo Boost) or i7 processor (1.9 GHz to 3.0 GHz in Turbo Boost) on board. It can have 2 to 8 GB RAM, 16 to 256 GB SSD, Wi-Fi, a 1.3-megapixel camera, SD card reader, Bluetooth, a USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI-out and Gigabit Ethernet. Curiously, in the specs is also a 2.5-inch hard drive, and an optional optical drive. It’s possible that the device has a normal hard drive and the SSD is used only as a starting accelerator. That would also explain the low capacity of the standard SSD.

Samsung Teases Something “New” In January

The problem with a company being a conglomerate is that when they say they are going to release something new, you have no freaking clue what it is gonna be. Why are we talking about conglomerates? Because a small South Korean company called Samsung – known for making stuff ranging from ships to refrigerators and from TV’s to mobile phones has justreleased a teaser video telling us all that they are coming up with something new this January.
Samsung Teases Something “New” In January
Thankfully for us, the date shown in the video coincides with that of next year’s CES – you know the electronics trade show that happens to be the world’s largest? So, at this point in time we are safe to assume that this “new” thing has processors and chips inside.
The little 20 odd second clip says nothing about the kind of gadget that this is going to be – but being cellphone freaks that we are, we are hoping for this one to be an out-of-this-world smartphone. There have been rumours going on about Samsung coming up with a Galaxy branded handset with a bendable display this time. We hope they also build an equally awesome smartphone, a worthy successor to the Galaxy S III around this bendable display and showcase it at the CES.

Nokia Lumia 920 the second Most Important Phone of 2012, ahead of the iPhone 5

Yesterday Gizmodo Australia gave the Nokia Lumia 920 a honourable mention and their Readers Choice Award, and today Gizmodo proper has named the device the second most important phone of 2012, placing the device ahead of the iPhone 5 and behind the Samsung Galaxy S 3, which took first place.
Calling Windows Phone 8 “incredible” and the Lumia 920 the best possible Windows Phone, they conclude the Nokia Lumia 920 was not only keeping up, but “in some ways surpassing” their competitors.

The Independent calls the Nokia Lumia 920 “probably the most advanced smartphone on the market”

The Independent calls the Nokia Lumia 920 “probably the most advanced smartphone on the market”

We’ve had the Daily Mail endorsing the Nokia Lumia 920, and now from the opposite side of the political spectrum we have UK publication The Independent doing the same.
In their review they call the phone “a big but handsome beast that’s stuffed to bursting with features” that “has a lot going on” with a “tremendous screen” that was “a good fit in the hand”.
They appreciated features such as the wireless charging and NFC and given the current cold spell, were particularly happy with the supersensitive touch screen.
The also called the camera “exceptionally good” and appreciated the included apps such as Nokia Drive and City Lens.
They concluded:
No wonder this phone is so big, there’s a lot in it. Some hands really will find it too big or too heavy, but it offers a tremendous user experience. This is arguably the best smartphone Nokia has built, and probably the most advanced phone available. It mixes solid reliability with moments of surprise and delight.
With the device gathering an increasing number of plaudits, how long before it is generally recognized, not just by media, but also by the general population, as one of the best handsets on the market?

Microsoft Launches Interactive Digital Outdoor Campaign For Windows Phone In UK

Microsoft Launches Interactive Digital Outdoor Campaign For Windows Phone In UK

Microsoft is launching its biggest ever interactive digital outdoor campaign in shopping malls around the UK to promote its Windows Phone devices. There will be around 24 interactive screens in shopping malls, cinemas across UK and public will be able to use Windows Phone templates to design their personalized start screens that can feature their photos and names.
Microsoft will later use the personalized Windows Phone start screens in digital outdoor campaign on screens across UK. Diane Perlman, marketing communications lead for Windows Phone UK said the following on this campaign,
“This idea had the wow factor right from the start and I’m thrilled to see it coming to life in cinemas and shopping centers across the UK.
“With this innovation, we are enabling consumers to get involved in our campaign, become ‘famous’ and see first-hand how Windows Phone is unique to each one of us. The result is slick, easy to use and fun to interact with, just like Windows Phone.”

Samsung ATIV S now on sale on T-Mobile Austria

Samsung ATIV S now on sale on T-Mobile Austria

saa
There are rumours of a delay of the Samsung ATIV S till next year, but if that is the case T-Mobile Austria has certainly not heard of them, as they are listing the device as in stock and ready to ship.
The handset is available from free on contract and has already had one review, calling it “honestly super”.
So if you have been holding out for the slimmest Windows Phone 8 handset with the biggest screen, there is some hope we will see the device on shelves soon all over the world.

Analyst Increases Estimates On Nokia Lumia Windows Phone Sales

Analyst Increases Estimates On Nokia Lumia Windows Phone Sales

Analyst firm Oppenheimer & Co.’s Ittai Kidron has increased his estimates for Nokia Lumia Windows Phone device sales. He says there is a decent demand for Lumia devices. He also raised his Q4 estimate to $9.7 billion in revenue for Nokia.
Our checks point to balanced demand across all smartphone platforms (Symbian, WP7, WP8) benefiting from channel fill and strong carrier/Nokia/Microsoft marketing. We also believe the Asha portfolio continues to gain traction in what is traditionally a strong quarter for feature phones.
While the Lumia 920 is seeing solid interest, we can’t ignore the fact that it’s benefiting from strong subsidies from carriers and Microsoft as well as discounting from Nokia. These efforts will moderate in 1Q13, raising the key question of momentum sustainability.
I seriously doubt about his views on momentum sustainability in Q1 2013 because Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 availability will further increase in many countries around the world. Increased availability should further push sales rather than decreasing it.

Australian Police Warns Apple iOS 6 Maps As A Potentially Life Threatening Issue

Australian Police Warns Apple iOS 6 Maps As A Potentially Life Threatening Issue

After Apple replaced the default Google Maps client on iOS with its own Mapping system, consumers suffered a lot. There were lots of errors throughout Apple Maps around the world. Now, Victoria Police from Australia have warned their people from using Apple Maps and informed people that it has potentially life threatening issue.
Local Police have been called to assist distressed motorists who have become stranded within the Murray-Sunset National Park after following directions on their Apple i-phone.
Tests on the mapping system by police confirm the mapping systems lists Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, approximately 70km away from the actual location of Mildura.
Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, making this a potentially life threatening issue.
Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.
Our readers from Australia should advise their friends and family to check out the awesome Nokia Maps on Lumia Windows Phone devices.

Gnomio Smart Watch For Windows Phone Seeks Funding

Gnomio Smart Watch For Windows Phone Seeks Funding

We have seen many kickstarter projects for smart watches. Most of them are not fully compatible with Windows Phone as they are for Android and iOS. Gnomio has now started a new project for a smart watch that is exclusively for Windows Phone devices. It will feature the following,
  • Notification of incoming and missed calls
  • SMS and email notification
  • Facebook and Twitter messages
  • Calendar reminders, timer
  • Weather
  • The player controls
  • Reminders of low battery charge smartphone
  • Search feature phone
The device will be based on Windows Embedded Compact 7 and will allow external developers to write app for it. You can fund the project and reserve your device.
Buying in cost $81, and the team promises delivery by April 2013, which seems somewhat of an aggressive time scale.  They are trying to raise $100,000 which is a rather high bar.

Nokia Lumia 920 EE exclusivity to end January 2013?

nokiauk
On Nokia’s UK Facebook page Nokia has hinted that the handset will become available on other carriers from January next year.
The handset is currently exclusive to EE, the joint venture between T-Mobile and Orange, making the handset unavailable on Vodafone, O2 or 3 UK, which tends to have the most attractive tariffs.
Hopefully the exclusivity deals will not just be expiring in UK, but also all around the world where the handset is only available on one carrier, meaning even more buyers will have access to the premier Windows Phone 8 handset.

Windows Phone seeing significant holiday boost compared to Q4 2011

Windows Phone seeing significant holiday boost compared to Q4 2011

image
Q4 2012 sales of Windows Phones so far has seen a significant boost over the same period last year.
Using the number of Monthly Active Facebook users as a guide, we can see around 627,000 MAU of the built-in Facebook app has been added since the 1st October 2012, the start of the quarter.
Last year over the same period less than 150,000 was added by the 15th December, possibly hinting at the source of Steve Ballmer’s statement that “Windows Phones are so far selling at four times the rate of the same time last year
Last year according to Gartner, who claims to measure units actually sold to end users rather than shipments, said 2.759 million Windows Phones were sold in Q4 2011.  The data suggests already 7 million Windows Phones were sold so far this quarter, and we may finally be heading to a + 10 million Windows Phone quarter.
The Facebook numbers are the first real hard numbers which are not ratios or percentages which gives real evidence that Windows Phones are not just in short supply due to poor supply, but also high sales.  Do our readers believe this will finally be Windows Phone’s break out quarter?

They are not quite revealing how yet, but we can expect to be able to test our cameras, flash lights, compasses and gyroscopes in short order.
