How to use Google services in Windows Phone 8

A vast number of people out there use Google's array of services as their primary providers for email, search, online calendars, synced contacts, maps, storage and more. With Windows Phone, Microsoft is obviously gearing users towards their competing services such as Bing and Outlook, haphazardly including support for Google as what appears to be an afterthought.

That said, it's still possible to integrate and use your Google account in a way similar to Android, although it is definitely not as tight. A variety of things require tweaking and hacking to get working properly, but at the end you will actually be able to use your Gmail account and calendars in a decent enough manner. We're here to show you what needs to be done to use Google services in Windows Phone 8.

You must still use a Microsoft Account

Before we explain how to integrate your Google account into Windows Phone 8 properly, you will still need a Microsoft Account for a number of critical WP8 features, most notably the Windows Phone Store. Luckily most people will already have a Microsoft Account if you've used Hotmail or Xbox LIVE in the past, and the latter integrates straight into the Games Hub, so it's not too much of an issue to add it.
The biggest annoyance for someone primarily using a Google account is that when you sync your Microsoft Account, it will automatically pull all your contacts, and there's no option available to not sync them. If you've used your Hotmail account in the past for spam mail and random chats with people on Windows Live Messenger, a whole bunch of unwanted contacts will be pulled.

There are two methods to deal with this. The first is to simply filter your People Hub to only show contacts from your most important accounts, whether that be Facebook, Gmail or whatever. You can do this in the People Hub through pressing the menu (••• icon) > settings > filter my contact list and then unticking accounts you don't want to be displayed.
The second is to permanently delete any contacts from your Microsoft Account, which is best done through the web interface. In outlook.com, press the down arrow beside the Outlook logo, then select the People tile; click the settings cog to filter to the appropriate accounts, then simply tick the contacts you want to delete in the left hand pane and click the Delete button that appears.

Push Gmail and syncing contacts

While there is an easy option to simply sync your account as a Google account in the settings, you'll get better results if you set it up as an Exchange ActiveSync account because it enables push email. Don't worry, because all of your contacts and your primary calendar will be synced across as well, just like if you were to set it up as a standard Google account.

To set up said Exchange ActiveSync account, go to the phone settings and then to email+accounts > add an account > Advanced Setup. In this menu, enter your Google account's email address and password, click next and then choose Exchange ActiveSync. From this menu with more options, the necessary Server box appears; here enter m.google.com, click sign in and you're all good to go (leave the Domain box blank).
Note: You can actually get push email through adding just one Google account, although if you're syncing more than one Google account you must use Exchange ActiveSync accounts to get push for all of them. ActiveSync has another benefit aside from multiple push accounts, as it allows for Google Tasks to be synced to the device, and we found it to be (on average) quicker at pushing emails to our WP8 phone.
Another thing you might want to do is set up the mail application to actually delete emails when you press the delete button – for some bizarre reason this is not the default behavior, as the app will only archive emails when you press delete. You'll need to open your phone's browser, make sure it's set to use the mobile version and then browse to m.google.com/sync. Log in, choose WP8 from the list of devices and selectEnable "Delete Email As Trash" for this device.

Most other features you're used to in Gmail work, such as archiving (simply move the email to All Mail) and labeling (move the email to the label folder). Contacts sync perfectly with complete info from your contacts, and will link up with contacts from other sources such as Facebook and Skype if you've added those accounts.

Adding multiple Google Calendars

Another example of poor Google integration in Windows Phone 8 is the lack of multiple Google Calendar support, but thankfully you can enable this through a hack of sorts. This process is a little bit more complex than the method for push email through Exchange ActiveSync, and it requires a desktop PC, but it does work in the end.
  1. On your desktop PC, open your web browser (in this example we're using Chrome) and download a user agent switcher extension. We used this one for Chrome.
  2. Temporarily disable JavaScript in your browser's settings
  3. Using the user agent switcher extension, set your browser to a mobile device user agent string (we used iOS) and then open m.google.com/sync
  4. Log in, and choose your device from the list (usually will be "WP8")
  5. In the address bar the URL will be m.gooogle.com/sync/settings[.....]&supportMultiCalendars=false - change the last word from false to true and reload the page
  6. Even though it says Select up to 1 calendars to sync to your device simply tick multiple calendars that you want to use and click Save
  7. You're all done, so re-enable JavaScript and restore the default user agent string

Note: The instructions above apply if you've set up your Google account as an Exchange ActiveSync account. If you have set it up as a standard Google account, you can follow the same steps without disabling JavaScript as it will allow you to select up to 25 calendars.
Now you can go back to your Windows Phone 8 device and re-sync your Google account, which should load the extra calendars to your device for configuration after a reboot.

Ditching Bing Maps for Google Maps

In our Windows Phone 8 review we mentioned that Bing Maps is rather lackluster, often failing to pinpoint locations we've searched for and random navigation bugs hamper the overall experience. If you don't have a Nokia Lumia phone with their improved mapping apps, one of the best solutions is to switch to using Google Maps in the form of an app.

We recommend gMaps (link to the Store here), which brings a full Google Maps experience to Windows Phone. As of writing the app hasn't been updated to use the 16:9 and HD resolutions of flagship Windows Phone 8 devices like the HTC Windows Phone 8X, but it's likely in the future that an update will come.
As gMaps taps right into the Google Maps APIs, you'll get full location pinpointing as well as navigation, current location, compass capabilities, Street View, Latitude and satellite maps. It can be a little rough around the edges but it's a far better experience than Bing Maps currently is.

Using other Google services

Bing Search is well integrated into Windows Phone 8, using the physical search button on your phone for quick lookups while providing other handy services such as Bing Vision, Music and Scout. If you desperately want to use Google for searching instead of Bing you'll have to download and open their dedicated app every time (Store link), which isn't as convenient as using the search button for similar results.
For Google Reader there is no better app on the Store than Nextgen Reader (Store link), which comes complete with a Live Tile and a fantastic interface. It's well worth $1.29 and there's a free trial available as well which appears to have all the functionality.

If you use Google Drive over SkyDrive there aren't any apps we found in the Store that actually work well enough to recommend. As SkyDrive integrates right into the Office Hub, OneNote and the camera we would suggest you choose it over Google Drive (you also get more free storage) if you want to sync stuff from your Windows Phone.
Perhaps one of the most well known and well made applications is MetroTube, which is the go-to app for watching YouTube videos. Download and install it now if you haven't already (Store link).
As for Google+ it's best to use the web interface, and for other services such as Finance, Translate, Offers and News you can either head into your web browser or download a substitute app from the Store. The Wallet Hub is a good substitute for Offers/Wallet and it's built right into the operating system, while there are plenty of stock apps on the Store to replace Google Finance.

Sony's credit rating downgraded to speculative

No one is safe from the pinch at the moment. Sony is the latest tech giant to be hit by general populous tightening their belts, having their credit rating downgraded from BB- to BBB-.
If this is alien to you, Fitch Ratings are applied to both companies and countries, using grades from AAA to D (with +/- intermediates for each grade). While BBB- isn’t the end of the world, their grading is now classed as speculative with the outlook negative. Panasonic also had their rating dropped to the BBB- grade.
Sony has been bleeding money for the past four years. The PS3 initially launched in 2006 to a lukewarm response, mainly due to its high price at the time. It took Sony until 2010 before they started to make money on the console.
In-between then and now, Sony has unsuccessfully attempted to crack the portable gaming market with the PSP Go and PSP Vita. With both devices overpriced and spec’d incorrectly for the market, they failed to sell as many units as Nintendo’s DS handheld device. The consumer was not convinced.
Fitch’s Steve Durose said in a statement:
We think there is little headroom for Sony. Without a radical change to the structure of their businesses it is difficult to see profitability improving enough for [Sony and Panasonic] to regain investment-grade ratings.
Sony has always been known as a company that provides products at premium pricing. While Sony isn’t dead in the water yet, the company will need to make serious changes to its business practises if it wants to become profitable once again.

More rumours of a Microsoft-branded Windows Phone 8 handset to be produced by Foxconn

Digitimes reports that Microsoft has now settled on an ODM to produce their own-branded Windows Phone 8 handset, the so-called ‘Surface phone.’
According to Digitimes’s sources Microsoft has retained Foxconn International Holding (FIH), famous for producing the iPhone for Apple.
Apparently Microsoft is still only testing the water, with only limited shipment volume procured initially, with the handsets set to launch in mid-2013.
Both  Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and FIH declined to comment.
With repeated reporting a Surface phone seems to become more and more likely.  Do our readers think Microsoft can out-do Nokia, or is their handset likely to be slightly shy of state of the art? Let us know below.

8 Great Windows 8 Features for Business

On the surface, Windows 8 has what it takes to make business users happy. Microsoft’s new OS offers the touch-friendly interface and responsiveness of the iPad, plus the versatility of the traditional desktop and the ability to run tons of traditional apps.
However, many are predicting a not-so-happy ending for the business community. “Businesses will choose to drag their feet on adopting Windows 8,” said Al Gillen, IDC’s vice president of system software, “for the simple reason that they don’t want to be the ones to find out what problems exist in the product.”
An IDC study confirms Gillen’s sentiments. According to the firm’s research, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise will make up just 10 percent of the PC market in 2014. That’s a pretty small chunk given Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise accounted for 50 percent of the market in 2011.
But are these low expectations proof that business leaders should avoid Windows 8 altogether, or does it pose a rare opportunity for IT managers to advance to a forward-thinking platform with smart features for enterprise and small business users? These eight Windows 8 features may compel you to move sooner rather than later.

GoG.com adds Windows 8 support to over 400 older PC games

When a new version of Windows comes out, there's always a risk that older Windows applications, particularly games, won't be compatible with the new OS. If you have an older PC, that means your copy of your favorite old PC game might not run if you make the plunge and switch to Windows 8.

The folks over at the PC game download site GoG.com are well aware of this issue. The site has a massive amount of games that were originally supposed to run just on MS-DOS and much older versions of Windows, and have taken the time to make sure most of them run on Windows 7. Today, the company announced that it has made an effort to update many titles in its game catalog to Windows 8 as well.

In a post today on the GoG.com site, the company said:

So as of today we're adding official Windows 8 support for most of the games in GOG.com catalog. There are currently 431 titles fixed, tested, and reported to be working properly under Microsoft's new OS. Note that most of these have not had the master builds updated, so you shouldn’t need to redownload the installer or anything. Some of the titles, our build ninjas performed their usual magic on, and they’ll work now in Windows 8--and we’re even adding Windows 7 support to a few. We’ll also be adding more Windows 8 games as time goes by and we’ve got time to apply some fixes to more of the classic games in the catalog.
This is great news for Windows 8 owners who might have been worried that they could have issues if they downloaded certain games from GoG.com. The company, which also doesn't use DRM for any of its titles, has recently branched out and started offering a small selection of new games in addition to its many classic PC games.

Finnish Carrier: Demand for Nokia Lumia 920 is the highest for any Nokia phone in the last 10 years

Finnish retailer DNA Store’s Managing Director Sami Aavikko  have told a local magazine in an interview that the demand for Nokia Lumia 920 in its stores were highest for any Nokia model released in the past 10 years. He also revealed that they are selling out of  the devices as they receive.
“All of what comes in, I sell immediately,” DNA Trading Ltd Managing Director Sami Aavikko said, noting that they have had to introduce booking list at stores due to demand.
The issue is not just due to short supply, with Sami saying quantities delivered were similar as for the iPhone 5, but that shortages was due to true demand.
On this occasion the experience is not just a Finnish phenomena, with Nokia having great trouble supplying Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 models around the world as it has been sold out in many stores across countries like Germany.
It was also reported that Nokia received about 2.5 million units of order for Lumia 920 around the world.
Nokia merely commented that they were pleased with the good reception from Lumia phones, and were trying to get phones to stores as fast as possible.

ZTE Apache Smartphone with an Octa-Core Processor – That’s Right, Eight Cores

Dual core? Old School. Quad core? Ooh fancy! Octa core? Come again? Yes, that’s right, MediaTek and ZTE are working on a smartphone equipped with an 8 core processor. A smartphone with an octa-core processor woud be the first of its kind on the market. As far as cores go, that would put the Chinese far ahead of their competitors NVIDIA and Qualcomm.

In early November the first rumors of the octa-core arrived. Now the Commercial Times of Taiwan has confirmed the whole thing with their own sources. Accordingly, MediaTek is currently planning the MTK MT6599, an octa-core processor based on ARM Cortex-A15, which will enable a new level of performance in smartphones. According to reports, the chip is manufactured in a 28-nanometer process from TSMC and supports displays with resolutions beyond 1280 x 800. It also can support smartphones with cameras up to 13 megapixels and 3G and 4G LTE networks. The first samples will allegedly be delivered in early 2013  to equipment manufacturers.
In May the first smartphone equipped with the mega chip should appear on the market from ZTE. Rumor has it that the so-called ZTE Apache is already being developed and should be a high end smartphone. Few details about the Apache are known. Up until now, MediaTek had represented the low end dual core processor market and the octa-core is quite a new development.
Among other things, it is speculated that MediaTek could use the ARM big.LITTLE technology, in which the very powerful ARM Cortex-A15 MPCores are combined with the low-power ARM Cortex-A7 core. It would be similar to Nvidia’s Tegra 3 so the computationally powerful cores are used when their power is actually required, while the energy-efficient low power core handles things while the phone is in standby or not in intense use.
Before we get too excited, we have to wait and see whether or not the rumors about the plans of MediaTek and ZTE really materialize. Do you believe in “more power through more cores”, or do you think efficiency is more important?

Steve Ballmer-signed Surface being auctioned for charity in Germany

If you live in Germany and still want to get your hands on one of Microsoft's new Surface tablets, you can get a rather unique version while also helping out a worthy cause. The German eBay website is currently holding an online auction that has a Surface unit signed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
The eBay Germany auction page has images of the signed Windows RT-based 32 GB version of the tablet. Ballmer signed the tablet when he visited Berlin for a Windows 8 developer event earlier this month, where the company gave out free Surface units to the developers who attended.

Proceeds from the sale of the signed tablet will go towards the Christmas party that's held every year for the children who are unfortunately patients at the cancer ward in the Campus Virchow-Klinikum, located in Berlin. The proceeds will go towards a Christmas party for all the kids in the facility, as well as fulfilling requests for a few lucky little Kinder who made wishes this year.
It looks like this item is only being sold and shipped to the winning bidder in Germany, so if you are outside the country, you might be out of luck. At the time of this writing the highest bid for the signed Surface tablet is 1,500 euros. The auction will close on December 5th.

Google Planning Their Own Notebook with a Touchscreen & Chrome OS

Google is getting tired of other manufacturers making products for them. First on the scene was the Nexus smartphone line, then the Nexus 7 & 10 tablets appeared and now a touchscreen notebook with Chrome OS is in the works.

According to the Chinese-language newspaper Commercial Times, Google is planning a touchscreen notebook that they will sell under their own brand name. The notebook will be a somewhat unusual size with a 12.85-inch display. Displays of 12.5, 13.1 and 13.3-inches are much more common. This is purely speculative, but perhaps the device will have a screen in 4:3 format, which could explain the strange diagonal.
The notebook will reportedly run Chrome OS and have a touchscreen, so it will be like another type of Chromebook. Google will work in collaboration with the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Compal, who is also the responsible production. The touch panel is said to come from Taiwanese supplier Wintek. The supply chain has already begun to manufacture the parts for the new touch-notebook from Google, they say. The delivery of the first finished devices is expected in late 2012. It is still undecided when the Google Notebook will make its debut in the market.
It will be interesting to see how Chrome OS works with a touchscreen format. What do you think about Google’s latest plans?

Getgoods.de and Noovi.de have Nokia Lumia 920 handsets in stock!

Today I checked the getgoods.de and noovi.de homepage to take a see if there are new Lumia 920 devices available (as regular readers will know, they have been sold out everywhere in Germany) and I was pleasantly surprised:
  • Getgoods.de is offering the yellow (unfortunately only the yellow one) for 649,- with free shipping.
  • Noovi.de is offering the black and yellow same price (but the shipping is not free I think)
Both apparently have stock available.
Amazon.de and other stores still have no devices, which is kind of surprising as amazon.de is also an exclusive partner to sell Nokia handsets. So, order your Lumia 920 now to be sure you get one, because as usual they are selling out fast!

Ericsson: The number of smartphone users to increase to 3 billion by 2017

The Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson, has just released the results to a study it’s been conducting focusing on smartphone users. Currently, the number of smartphone users worldwide is somewhere in the region of 700 million. However, the projections are that in the next five years that figure could quadruple to more than 3 billion.

Although it’s worth being more than a little cautionary when dealing with long-term forecasts, especially within the mobile sector, these projected facts and figures are not to be ignored. According to this study, the amount of traffic caused by mobile devices data volume has doubled within one year. Ericsson believes that this volume of data will increase a further twelve fold in the next six years.
Smartphones already play a key role in the increase of data traffic and with 40 percent of all mobile sales in the third quarter of 2012 being smartphones, that’s a trend that doesn’t seem to have an end in sight. With those sorts of figures it’s not hard to see where the projections from Ericsson are coming from.
Ericsson has also suggested that by the end of this year, there will be approximately 6.6 billion active mobile phone contracts. In a world of 7 billion people that figure is disproportionately high as Ericsson has taken into their calculations a percentage of people that have more than one contract, perhaps 1 for a mobile and another for a tablet.
To cope with the influx in global data Ericsson expects a large increase in LTE networks that can handle the increased volume in traffic and offer download speeds in the 100Mbps range.  There is also a more advanced LTE system (LTE-Advanced) that can offer even superior download speeds on supported devices.

HTC Watch updated to version 1.8, add closed captions

HTC has updated their video download and streaming and rental client, HTC Watch, to version 1.8.
No changelog was revealed, but WindowsPhoneItaly noted the addition of closed captions support.
Unfortunately the update does not signal support for Windows Phone 8, which is still lacking from the app, possibly due to lack of support for HD resolutions.
The app can be found in the HTC collection or via  this link here.
I have looked at this client before, and found the movies somewhat expensive. Are any of our readers actively using the software? Let us know below.

Multiple WP 7.8 RTM Custom ROMs now available on XDA-Developers

WP7 Root Tools reports that if you are the brave sort, you do not have to wait for an official Windows Phone 7.8 update to be pushed to your phone, as Custom ROMs for multiple handsets, including the popular Nokia Lumia 800, is available on XDA-Developers already.
The build number of these ROMs are 8858 and the build tag "WM7_Main_Ship" , is believed to be the final Release to Manufacturers version of the ROM.
ROMs are available for the HTC Titan,HTC Mozart,HTC HD2,HTC Radar,HTC HD7,Samsung Omnia7,HTC Trophy,HTC 7Pro,Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800and needs an HSPL bootloader installed to be flashed.
The ROMs vary in feature list but all have at least:
  • Full unlock v4 – now with root access notifications.
  • Ringtones from your personal music collection.
  • Clock tile.
  • High quality WP7.8-compatible tiles.
  • USB2Video driver.
  • XAP deployer built in.
  • Windows Mobile Device Center Launcher.
Of course flashing a Custom ROM is a lot more risky that waiting for an official update, and will result in your data being lost, so its not recommended, but it is nice to know the option is there for those that just cant wait.

Kindle Fire $30 off for Cyber Monday with Coupon Code

Amazon isn’t going to miss the chance to move a few Kindle Fire’s on Cyber Monday with a $30 off coupon code to commemorate to the occasion. What we’ve got is the $159 Kindle Fire which is a cross between the 2011 Kindle Fire and the Kindle Fire HD.

The exterior shell of the 2012 Kindle Fire is essentially identical to its 2011 predecessor, the new Fire still uses a dual-core OMAP 4 SoC from Texas Instruments, but clocked at 1.2GHz rather than 1.0GHz.
The 2012 Kindle Fire has the same 1024×600 resolution as the previous device. At 169ppi, it’s not as crisp as the 216ppi 1280×800 screens on the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7, but it’s fine for reading.
The good
No artificial software limitations relative to the Kindle Fire HD
Small hardware upgrades over last year’s model
Cases and accessories made for the 2011 Kindle Fire will all be compatible
Still fundamentally a decent low-cost tablet
The bad
The Kindle Fire’s design is looking and feeling ever-more chunky next to the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7
Amazon’s Android skin is still a bit jerky and slow, and the Silk browser is still faster in Amazon’s advertising than it is in real life
More and more advertisements are encroaching on the stuff you actually want on your tablet but if you take the coupon code and get the version with out advertising you’ll be coming out on top!
If you’re looking to take Amazon up on this deal make sure that you type in the coupon code FIREDEALwhen you’re checking out. Here is the link to the Amazon page if you want to check it out.

Western Digital 1TB USB 3.0 External HDD – 60% off for Cyber Monday

You can never have enough storage! I’ve got a few external hard drives each dedicated to backing up something different. It’s a safe bet that you’re going to need more storage so you should get in line for this Cyber Monday deal!

Amazon is offering a 1TB USB 3.0 Western Digital portable Hard Drive at 60% off! That’s only $80.56! All of my external hard drives are actually Western Digital so I can personally recommend this product.
If you want to check it out, here is a link to the Amazon Cyber Monday deal, but you better act fast since it is a limited time offer.

Google Trends shows interest in the Nokia Lumia 920 exceeds NL 800,900 peaks, still growing

Demonstrating something which Nokia themselves have alluded to, it seems the the Nokia Lumia 920 is benefiting from the groundwork laid by the Nokia Lumia 800 and 900 before it, and has exceeded the peaks of interest in both handsets, if search volume as measured by Google Trends is any indication.
Of course the search volume is still only a small percentage of that for the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, but if Nokia ever manage to sort out their supply problems there is little doubt the handset will sell better than either of its predecessors.
See the embedded chart after the break.

Dear Friend,
Have you ever wondered how some students breeze through their exams with seemingly no effort at all, while others struggle to even get close to the cut-off mark?
Well, here's their secret...
In many instances, these smart students are not 'naturally gifted'; instead, they cleverly make use of the right set of tools to help them fast-track their learning abilities and enable them to graduate with top honors.
For example, John Davis was an average student - he was not exceptionally outstanding, nor was he exceptionally weak in his studies. And up until a week ago, he used to struggle with his French, Geography and History lessons.
