Samsung Galaxy S IV to help promote Qi wireless charging against rivals
Nokia has shown strong commitment to including wireless charging in their Windows Phones, and have even spoken about expanding it down their line. The greatest risk however to the future of the Qistandard used by Nokia is the adoption of rival standards by heavyweights such as Samsung and Apple.
Now Digitimes reports that Samsung may be looking at adopting Qi for their next big blockbuster, the Galaxy S IV, according to their sources.
Unfortunately it is not expected to be built-in, but rather an additional back, like Samsung has been doing already for a number of handsets. It is still however expected to cement the future of Qi and the Wireless Power Consortium against rivals such as by the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA).
Unfortunately as usual Apple is not playing ball, and while there is rumours that company is also looking at wireless charging, chances are they will be using their own internal “better” standard.
Unfortunately Apple certainly has the power to move the market, especially when it comes to support by 3rd parties and accessory makers, making Samsung’s support for the standard even more important.
Hopefully Apple will decide to sit out this generation and allow Qi, who has licensees like HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, Sony Mobile Communications and of course Nokia, to solidify its position, which will make support in places public places like airprts, coffee shops and restaurants very likely, and make using our Lumias even more enjoyable.
